Brilliant information, thank you for highlighting this important subject. One of my girls is being monitored by my vet as she has 3 little lumps, they're free moving currently, but I'm visiting the vet again next month to be sure it's nothing that requires more action. I will be guided by my vet as to any course of action that may be needed. My vet Johnny Kriek in Surrey UK is on your list - thank you for including him after my previous experience with a couple of my emergency vet visits. Edit: also thank you for including my local rescue in Ashtead

Thanks for posting about this topic, Scotty! Super informative as always! One of my piggies recently had a lump developing on his back that I was super concerned about (and I even emailed you for thoughts about surgery process too -and appreciated your response!) turns out it was just a cyst and Greek & Associates in Yorba Linda, CA was awesome at helping to remove it and were fantastic with their care both pre and post op. Highly recommend them to other SoCal LA/OC area guniea pig parents ☺️

Thanks for posting this Scotty! My one guinea pig has to go in for surgery tomorrow to remove a lump and biopsy. We are hoping it’s a lipoma or a benign tumour but it’s very close to his mammary gland. I’ve been low-level anxious all week, especially about the anaesthetic. My other guinea will be with him for moral support the whole time, so hopefully that helps.

In my experience with mammory tumors there is often a discharge through the nipple. I also am happy to report that I had a guinea pig who required surgery completely recover and live a normal full life after that

My girl Salt grew a cancerous neck tumour overnight. My vet removed it after Salt's sister Pepper decided to make a snack of it. Salt lived another 12 months after that, I lost Salt due to an inoperable bladder tumour. I lost Summer to a mammary tumour that had spread to other parts of her body. My boy Roadie had 2 abscesses on his bum. They stunk, they stunk more then his boar pocket.

Just want to add my bump story, so people have as many anecdotes to draw from as they can. One of my male rescues, Wilbur Littlebear, had a lump on his side. He was in good health otherwise. The vet tried to take an "aspiration" to determine if it was something that needed to be dealt with. Whatever was in there was so thick it could not pass through the needle. He advised to monitor for changes in health or the appearance of the lump. It never changed and never posed any problems, and was still present years later when he had to be put to sleep because he did not recover after surgery to remove stones from his urethra.

My Cinder had a lot of lumps. I took her to the vet and she had operations for them. I now think that I should have cut down on surgeries since not cancer. Her brother, Blaze, had a growth which was removed. The vet said that he's only seen that cancer two times in his practice. I wish I'd known more then but with your great channel, I'm better informed. Thanks Scott.

I my husband has built cages for them and I checked one of Saskia video's to see how to bond them . RSPCA say I'm doing everything right the right food ( Thanks to you ,) cage size ( thanks to Saskia) health checks . IE parasites and mites treatment. Thanks to both of you . If we get lumps and bumps we get them checked out...or we should. Well, it's for our furry pals. I considered a pet rodent and watched many KZfaq videos about their care. I was a kid in the 1970s, and It’s great to see how most people care for their pet rodents now. Such a pleasant change from metal chicken wire bottoms. In choosing which species of pet rodent I wanted, I narrowed it down to rats or Guinea pigs. I’m left at a standstill now and can’t decide. Rats are more intelligent and affectionate like a dog but can’t be kept in an open enclosure like how Guinea pigs can be kept in. Rats are so intelligent, but so much so that they are great escape artists. Also, Rats only live for about two years and that seems a tad too short, especially since they need to be kept in groups, and when introducing new Guinea pigs to replace one that has past away, if you want a baby or younger Guinea pig, you need to introduce two of them together so they will have a companion in their same age group while adjusting to being included to a new home with older piggies. So even though they have short life spans, keeping them as a group turns into an almost endless cycle of commitment. Guinea pigs on the other hand can be kept in an a more open enclosure, and live longer (3-4 years), but seem skittish and like little mindless eating machines. I can’t decide because I want my favorite parts of both rats and Guinea pigs rolled into one but the aspects I like about one, the other doesn’t have. Until I decide, I’ll just keep watching more meat KZfaq videos.

Thank you for your inquiry, antonio. I'm sure whatever you decide they will be wonderful pets. I have had both and I admire both very much. Yes you have stated some distinct differences. I have a guinea pig care guide and I even have a video about 10 steps before you get guinea pigs you might consider watching that. It is in the first section of my guinea pig care guide. However some of those points may also apply to pet rats. With regards to keeping them in groups. Boys do best in pairs and girls are best in groups. Many people think that littermates, a pair of brothers from the same litter will do well but generally once they hit adolescence they tend to fight. In general a pair or group of girls is usually the most peaceful option however when you find a solid pair of bonded boys they usually will remain so for life. Maybe the choice boils down too if you have an expert vet in your area that specializes in one of them. If you cannot find a guinea pig savvy vet in your area that may be a problem. Ultimately it probably does boil down to personality. Rats are more outgoing in their relationship with humans but there are some very outgoing guinea pigs especially when you are holding treats. I do think that rats are more like dogs in the sense that they will climb on you and like to be around their people whereas guinea pigs are much more happy in a safe place and you will have limited time with them out of the cage. Their diets are also considerably different. It may be a deal breaker if it turns out that you are allergic to Timothy Hay. If you can locate a rescue in your area I would say spend time with each and see if you have any allergies. Some people break out in hives holding rats. Please stop by and let us know what you decide.

Guinea pigs have much longer lifespans than rats. They are also very demanding and expensive if you want to treat them right. I've had ours for 5 years, and there's no signs of slow down in older age. I've seen people say their pig lived 13-15 years. If you decide on them, be aware they are one of the longest living rodents.

It is most likely a fatty lymphoma, if it grows in size it would be worth checking out. I like to imagine something that is the similar size of it and then check back every few days and if it grows in size get it looked at by a vet. One of my guinea pigs has fat lumps which checked out after lab tests as benign lumps. Last months I've changed their diet to less pellets and more hays and herbs for their kidney health. This indeed seemed to lessen the amount of sludge in their urine and they also lost some weight because apparently they indulged a bit too much in the overly nutritious pellets that I used to give them too much of. The lumps in the lumpy pig seemed to have shrunk and he seems to be less bothered about me touching the lumpy area. It may or may not be from losing the extra fat, but I'm quite happy with this progress. Also being a bit slimmer now makes him more energetic and he grooms his fur a lot better now. Some pigs do let themselves go a bit too much if they get the chance.

I think of myself as pretty observant when it comes to picking up issues with my gang. But at a check-up at my vet yesterday for Zoomie and Cinnamon, my vet picked up a tiny hard lump on Zoomie's front leg. It was not there last Wheek. We are not certain what it is. My vet will check it again at Zoomie's next check up on the 29th of August(I will keep an eye on it until then). It is rock hard. My vet thinks maybe Zoomie got a poke by a piece of hay chaff and that caused a injury and lump to form. Zoomie, Cinnamon&Spot are being medicated for Coccydiosis right now.

Hi Scotty! I’m a little concerned about my Guinea pig! Has this large fatty growth coming from the side of its neck- it feels soft and fatty but it feels large and I’m concerned about it. Attached to muscle-Not like a lipoma honestly. My Guinea pig doesn’t seem to be in any distress, is eating and acting fine! I’m going to take him to the vet on Monday.

Can you do a video on trichoepithelioma? I had two guinea pigs who developed a very similar lump on the rump. The vet said that it was likely trichoepithelioma and recommended removal--I am still not entirely sure how to tell the difference between this and a regular sebaceous cyst. One pig survived the surgery just fine; unfortunately, our other beloved Peppa pig developed what seemed to be, in retrospect, a respiratory infection after the surgery and died. I didn't want to administer anti-biotics because I was afraid of the effects on the GI tract and Peppa didn't show any signs of infection at the place of surgery. Unfortunately I missed the signs of the respiratory infection and feel so terrible. That's another thing--apparently it is really common for piggies to get respiratory infections after amnesia because food particles can get into the airway when they are under--but I rarely see people talking about this kind of thing!

I'm under the impression that my guinea pig has a lipoma. I've been to the vet and been advised to either 1. Get a test or 2. Get surgery before any test is considered. I chose to do surgery ASAP (I'm going next Thursday) because I do not trust that it won't increase in size rapidly. I had a guinea pig when I was younger who's lump grew far too big to be safely removed so he was put down. They called it a build-up of "fatty tissue" from what I recall, I don't think they were a professional exotic veterinary practice so they never specified what it was. This was back in 2005 - 2010. Am I doing the right thing even though I don't know if the growth is harmful or not? I just don't want to lose my beloved Mumu, I want to avoid making the same mistake as when I was a kid. Growths like this scare me because they can get out of hand real quick (in my experience)... it's unpredictable.
