Channel Switching, Gain & Volume Controls - 01:20
EQ & Tone Controls - 07:41
Reverb & Effects Controls - 16:30
So you’ve just got your first guitar amplifier, and you’re ready to plug in and start rocking out, recreating some of the classic tones that you’ve heard from your favourite guitar heroes. The only problem is, you’re a little bit confused as to what exactly each of these little knobs actually does!!! But don't worry, PMTVUK are here to help!
In this video, we take an in depth look at the most common types of amplifier controls and how best to use them. We'll be looking at the difference between volume and gain, and how these controls work depending on whether you're using a solid state transistor amp or a valve or tube amplifier. We find out how to use EQ and tone controls to find your amplifier's tonal "sweet spot" and take a look at the differences between reverb, modulation and delay effects...plus much more!

I’ve had my Boss Katana 100 for nearly 18 months and I must admit I haven’t actually made the effort to find the sweet spot. I tend to dial in as I go. I’ll have a play round with it later

I got the Katana Artist mkII and I am completely baffled by the sheer configuration combinations. The Boss Tone Studio really helped me. I installed some community based patches and tweaked them. I asked my wife and kid to run some errands for the afternoon and I cranked it. My house rattled off the foundation!

The Fender Mustang GT200 that I recently purchased surprised me by not only outdoing the Katana I used as my primary amp at home in the range of effect options and vintage amplifiers plus cabinets but also having an all around better sounding speaker and tone overall. The Katana is the shit but I'm extremely impressed by Fender's constant updates that improve the amp every time they release a software patch.

I liked how all control settings are demonstrated with successive detail, and with comparisons that use evenly played and similar riffs so you can definitely hear exactly what the controls do. I especially liked how the presenter didn't use this video as a vehicle to show off how awesomely they can shred, although it's clear that they're an excellent guitar player.

Gain is how much you are amplifying a signal....volume is the amount of energy one puts out.think of it in this way.you are controlling a river by a dam and a gate.increasing gain will increase the wave heights.increasing volume will open the gate and thereby let more water to flow without changing wave height

Exactly the same for me too. Been releasing music for the last year and a bit and finally want to start doing live music. However, I know nothing of tones so literally learning from scratch. Annoying because I’ve had a bit of success with my music online but that’s because other people have mixed it and picked the tones for me lol

Great video for a rookie like me. I have 2 amps, a practice Amp that only has volume, treble and base knobs and a button when pushed in is O.D. and not pushed in is clean. I think that's pretty simple stuff, yet I can get some different sounds out of it. The other Amp is an acustic Amp and has more knobs: gain, low, middle, high, reverb, chorus, and master. It's a 2 Chanel, instrument and microphone. Your video has been very helpful in setting both of these amps up. Thank you!!!!!

Excellent tutorial on how to adjust different frequencies!!! Exactly what I do with any sound frequency/knob/equalization! Except, I'd recommend starting with all knobs at 0 (except volume, somewhat low). Then gradually increase each. This way you hear each frequency/part better how it sounds by itself.

If you have a valve state non tube amp that has great sound on rhythm/chords but the lead guitar sounds thin than I suggest an Ibanez tube screamer pre amp pedal All you have to do is step on it and your lead guitar has a more tube amp sound... More warm and it will boost your volume when you take your lead! My fender twin champion needs one! My next purchase...

Seeing the inside of the amp is kindof cool. When I bought my guitar they only had orange amps at the shop so i just got one of those. It isn't a bad practice amp. I notice the gain is almost like it has four different levels rather than a meter that just goes up gradually. *edit* oh it is called a sweet spot. Good to know the name for it.

So the confusion happens when you try to set a balance between what your amp settings are and what you do with the tone and pickup controls on the guitar itself. How do you set all this up? Amp first then guitar or what?
