The demise of local music stores has meant the loss of a local guy that could fix problems and serve as an intermediary with the guitar company. The dealer didn’t want to sell products that were a problem nor deal with companies that wouldn’t return his phone calls. The fancy picture on the website doesn’t reflect the crappy product those guys are sometimes sending you. It’s buyer beware unfortunately now.

When I listen to Baxter and Jonathan talk, they do get off topic from time to time, but to me it's because they just say what they are thinking and sometimes it's hard to focus. My brain works the same way. I'll be thinking ok I gotta do this or that, then out of nowhere I think of a funny movie quote or something else completely random. I have no issues with going off on random tangents because for me sometimes it's hard to focus on one thing for 10-20 minutes. I love the content and the channel and if I lived in the area, I would be stopping in once a week just to say hi and see what new gear you have that I "need".

I have bought several higher end guitars from distant shops, All went well, but I always actually talk to someone if it is possible. Bought a very nice Backlund Rockerbox direct from Eastwood, but they also sell in some shops. Great setup out of the case. My go-to 'bucker guitar. Bought a Cole-Clark Fat Lady II 12 string from Gruhns in Nashville based on their photos and a phone call with them. Perfect, in stock and my alternative choice was a Martin with a long wait. Very happy with that one too, it is a keeper. Key is to know the seller reputation for doing good QC and setups.

PRS is the only brand I'm 100% comfortable buying unseen. Got a Strat from CME, that was excellent and no problems. Thought buying a new Fender (direct) would be OK but it arrived with a smashed pickup switch due to poor packaging and a weak-ass case. Lesson learned. Love the channel, guys, keep it up!

Bought a Kraemer Pacer Classic in Passion Purple. Had a crack in the neck pocket, the neck was not seated properly, screw holes on the spring cavity were double drilled. Wood putty found in the trem cavity. and of course very sharp fret ends from fret sprout. returned it for another one. no cracks, still had wood putty and sharp frets. Beautiful finish and the Alnico 5 humbuckers sound nice. bought it from a reputable store that took care of me with no issues. Being Lefty I have to mostly buy online.

I remember trading multiple things to get an affinity squire at Wilcutts around 20 years ago. Bob himself went through the guitar I was trading for, did a few things with the neck and frets to make sure it met his standards before he was willing to send it out the door. I was seriously impressed. Hope to make it to Casino one day to look at things.

I was on the hunt for a GOOD Gibson LP Standard. Took me about 10 years to fall on it. Tried a bunch through the last decade, looked around and just took my time... I always have time for a nice instrument. One day I got lucky, it just clicked and bought it on the spot new. Now one thing. It has issues. Honestly, the pickup switch doesn't stick up correctly and other little things here and there, but the neck is spot on. After 40 years of playing guitars, this is a rare thing at Gibson (standard line). Great videos, cheers.

I took a plunge and bought from a US retailer for shipping to the UK (model wasn’t to be found in the UK). The guitar (Reverend) was perfect. Really nicely set up out of the box. But the shop sent it from the USA to UK in just the basic guitar box, no box within a box or any further packing. So it did get a dent by the lower strap button. Kept it anyway got a few £££’s back, but never understood why they sent it like that, they even said it was enough packing (clearly it wasn’t). But love the Reverend. Glad I took the risk. Fenders are still a bit hit and miss, poor fret finishing on a few I’ve seen, would always want to see it first, don’t get me started on Gibson! Cheers guys… all the best with the vids.

My brother bought a Les Paul, and it took 3 tries to get one that didn't have issues. I bought a PRS SE off Sweetwater and while there was never a cosmetic issue, I did have a problem with the pots, which they replaced. I haven't had the problem on my second one. My Silver Sky was perfect out of the box. I have a Gretch (made in China) and it had a tiny cosmetic problem that you wouldn't notice without really looking for it. I did end up changing the pots, wiring, swapped the pickups for TV Jones, and replaced the tuners with Gretch locking tuners. Every guitar company is capable of having QC issues, but some have much more than others. I would gladly take a chance on a PRS online, than I would a Gibson online.

I find most brands will have something they could improve on. I find Fender to be the best. I've never had an issue with one. PrS SE is pretty good, but some of the finishes I've seen have things like bubbles in the clear, haze spots and orange-peeling. Especially with the Burl wood tops. Schecter is awesome. As for places to buy from, in Canada, I've had no problems with Long & McQuade, Steve's Music, or Guitar Works. As for American, I like Music Zoo or Sweetwater. All of those do at least a superficial check and a quick clean of the instrument first.

I remember when I pre-ordered my Surf Green Squier Jag when it first released. I ordered it months in advance the guitar store got 7 in stock all in Surf Green. Of course they were all spoken for, so when I open the box to inspect it, the rosewood on the fretboard was so chewed up it was heartbreaking. (We searched the box trying to figure out how it ended up looking like it was chiseled to bits.) then I had to wait a couple more weeks, all because my name got put on the defective one lol. It was worth the wait, got a slightly nicer grain / colour on the one I now own.

Elephant in the room: gone are the days when you could go to a guitar shop and play 3 or 4 D-18s or J-45s. So we have to buy online. After an excellent live conversation with the good folks in Bozeman, I got my J-45 from Music Villa. I’d go back there in a heartbeat. Setup was perfect. It even arrived in tune. They discussed the shipping route and considered humidity and temperature conditions along the route to my house at that time in November. Plus, they threw in a t shirt, which I wear proudly, and a full Humidipak. ( I have since seen that my humidity here (Bay Area) keeps all my acoustics at around 49% RH naturally.

I love the videos, even when a disjointed train of thought completely derails mid topic. I wholeheartedly approve of the Boba Fett & Dune discussion. I’d love to do business with y’all, but the nearly 2 hour drive, & some solid small local shops have always taken me down a different path. While I’d prefer to support a smaller business, every time, sometimes availability is the reason I purchase from a larger company. The not so thinly viewed digs at Sweetwater seem a little unfair. Yes, I get that they were bought by an investment group/conglomerate recently, but I haven’t seen any difference in the high level of customer support & service they provide. Their inspection may not be of the quality your local tech would provide but it’s far better than any other company of that size. It’s also my experience that any issues with them are quickly & seamlessly resolved. I also appreciate that they do employ real musicians, like my rep, & a friend who just accepted a position there. That’s more than can be said for the local Guitar Center.

While no manufacturer is perfect, I have yet to experience a QC issue with either brand (80+ guitars over the past 25 years). To answer the question of the thumbnail, any brand past the 400 dollar mark is going to be decent but it’s the setup they receive (or don’t receive) that makes all the difference. I’ve played custom shop gibsons in a crappy store and hated the guitar but honestly it wasn’t gibsons fault. It was the store who let the strings go dead and hadn’t intonated the thIng in god knows how long. I also love the fact that the videos aren’t even addressing the actual question from the thumbnails half the time and still….STILL some of the best content I’ve watched! Boys maybe you should invent beskar strings????

Also where I’m at we have had a very cold and dry winter so an acoustic guitar might leave a store in perfect condition but by the time you get it after being in these conditions anything can happen to a guitar, I would only work with stores that have a good return policy.

The whole vibe of this show is what a guitar shop should be like. Two people talking about guitars and getting distracted by kobe beef and McDonald's. There is very little chatter like this with the customers at a Guitar Center. Keep it up.

I think I trust Fender CS more The Troposphere strat I bought with out playing first worked out just fine The 2019 LP I bought I drove up to Nashville from FL to check out first since I was road tripping up to Indiana at that time The shop actually checked all the boxes as far as QC seeing how it was slightly used when they got it Have to say both have been a joy and were first new guitars I have purchased in a long time Also have to say the 50's Standard has broken in so very nice Tailpiece studs all the way down too The Strat is taking a little longer for some reason My 65 Strat is SO easy to play besides the idiosyncrasies the old one's have Cheers fellows

Agreed as previously stated, a lot of the fun of the show is how real you both are, and the unscripted nature of the show. And I have gained good info from you guys going off topic! hahaha I'm all for the off-topic discussions, great stuff!

I usually try to get from places with real pictures. Musiciansfriend is okay in twrms of deals, but you have to be extra careful with what you order from them. Sweetwater takes pictures of what they have, which more places need to do. Especially if it has a lam top or something like that

Funny you mention pots. I’ve had two relatively new guitars (PRS & Gordon Smith) and both had pickup selector switches that started failing. They sent me replacements and I swapped them out. QC couldn’t catch this.

I have never had any issues with the PRS I've bought online, and I bought them used. They are the only brand I feel 100% comfortable with buying this way.

I bought 2 guitars and a amp head and cab on Amazon, they were awesome! However 2 came from Chicago Music Exchange. I still had to have the guitar professionally set up though. It’s very dry up here and 4,500 ft elevation. The other I forget what shop it came from but it was also in really good shape. No issues aside from my amp cab getting a small indentation on the front facing side during shipping. I do like what Sweetwater does with the pictures and weight though. If I can afford another I would like to buy from a place with pics and info. However Sweetwater deals are a joke. Musicians friend and guitar center blow them away with their deals. So, yeah.

I need to trust the dealer more in the event that there are any issues. I've got news for you, I've ordered PRS, Gibsons, and many others that have had QC issues and there really isn't any excuse that they were not caught earlier in the process. Personally, I trust Sweetwater, Wildwood, and CME but I am sure there are many others that can be added to that list.

Ha! Wanted to pick up a PRS SE Zack Myers semi hollow for my son for Christmas and they have one at GC so I went to take a look. The "f" hole was a very sloppy cut with lots of little splinters and the cavity showed some glue, white paint and sawdust. Of course it wasn't set up. I asked the GC dude if they set it up and they said "yeah, we take it out of the box and set it on the wall". Needless to say, GC in my town will not be getting much love from me. But I still can't buy on line. Gotta play em first man. Too many variables. It just blows my mind that they can't be bothered to setup or even tune these relatively expensive things.
