Great video my friend! I learned the whole "Surfin with the Alien" album when it first came out. It took me about a month to figure out Joe's licks but eventually nailed it. I saw him touring the album for that year in Boston at the Avalon. Joe was my mentor because of that album. That album and his playing on it just blew me away! The back up band was playing and I was just watching them and a guy next to me said, "these guys are pretty good huh"? I briefly looked at him and said, not bad. Little did I know I was talking to my mentor JOE SATRIANI!! Had know Idea. He had shaved his head that year and was wearing sunglasses in the club, I thought it was weird. He started his show and I was mortified!! My favorite guitar player was trying to have conversation with me and all I was trying to do was wait for him to get on stage and play!! Lost my opportunity to ask him questions about his playing! Lost my touch with greatness! BUMMER!

To me, action (string height) is something to always point out. From experience, an off the shelf action makes a lot of Joe's stuff very frustrating to do. Especially when you are allowing the fingering hand to do a lot of the work. I know I spent the first 4 years of learning guitar and trying to learn his style was infuriating because the strings were too high. No one had explained "action" to me. It wasn't until I asked my new teacher how to actually do this kind of stuff. He took my guitar and pushed down on the string and said "Your strings are too damn high, take it and get the action adjusted lower". After my lesson, I took it to the local luthier and asked him to put new strings on and lower the action. The next day, I picked my guitar up and things were so much easier. I still had to work to get the two hand tapping stuff down but I didn't get that ringing sound when I tapped the strings.

The acrobatics and stuff are cool until teenager hormones production is lowered over time, but one thing that I never get tired of Joe's playing is when he improvise bluesy solos in the mid section of the neck, those mid notes are pure magic, not so squeakly high neither so muddy low... Specially when using neck pickup \ o /

Discipline is the key to mastery..everything from raising kids to love requires discipline in order to keep balance and understanding...Joe uses discipline in everything he does ..just look at how he utilizes feedback in his music..many decades ago feedback was just an annoying sound..Hendrix improvised and used feedback to his advantage but Satriani took that shit to a whole new level....it only comes from discipline.
