In this sample guitar lesson from his online guitar school, Andreas Oberg (artistworks.com...) talks about jazz comping. This comes by special request from his online students, click on the link to find out more about online guitar lessons with Andreas Oberg!
Students of his online guitar school have unlimited access to hundreds of guitar lessons from Andreas, plus many other special performances and exclusive interviews. The best part though is that you can submit practice videos of yourself playing directly to the site for Andreas to review. He'll watch your video and respond with his own video where he tells you what you should be practicing in order to improve. All Andreas' students have access to each others' Video Exchanges®, which date back to 2009 so there are literally hundreds of them to go through. It's the most effective way to improve your playing - direct feedback from a master. Check out the link for more info about how it all works and to get more free sample lessons.

I like how in your intro you talk about comping being the support of the soloist, but in more of a background aspect. Great lesson!

How the hell do you even start learning to comp like this? This man did not repeat a chord one time in the entire lesson

Get to know different voicings, and get to know the fretboard so you know where to place the chords. Above all, practice. Here's a good one by Jens Larsen on different voicings: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aZiBZNiav6-3fmg.html. There's also some passing chords in Andreas' video, get to know those too.

And one more thing: use approach chords! This is perhaps the simplest way to spice up your chords.

I am well versed with the caged system and major triads all over the neck at this point since commenting previously. I'm starting to get into minor triads as well but this sort of stuff seems like an even greater level than that. However, as my ear gets better and my knowledge of the fret board increases, I am able to use those approach chords you mentioned.
