Man... I kinda went full pedal throughout the last three years. Though, as a teenager some forty years ago, i think my first effects pedal was a two-switch phaser of some kind. My little Peavy practice amp had two channels and reverb, and i had no idea what a phaser was, other than the Star Trek variety. I learned how to play "Crimson & Clover" because of it, as well as a few other songs. These days, I have quite the pedal collection. Plenty of fuzz pedals based on different topographies; a good selection of reverbs, delays, and chorus, and quite a few oddballs. Fun episode as always, y'all 🤘 Happy Monday

My first ever pedal was a Boss DS-1 got it for X-mas '78 still have it. She's the greasiest girl in the trailer park. Second was a Boss HM-2 Delay bought if rom a guy who "needed" $20 for half a bag of weed. I told him I didn't want it, but I didn't want him coming back in 2 days wanting it back. I love this pedal ❤💕❤ I've had it since '90 and won't part with it. But now I own a cabinet full of pedals. I went overboard but I haven't bought anything in about 4 -5 years so I'm doing good now, I guess. Edit - I ordered a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah (Wha?) pedal the day before he shut down his business. And while I was waiting for it to arrive, I broke my Ankle and had to have it fused. So I did a little impromptu fusion and now I can't play the pedal unless I'm sitting down because my balance is so bad even turning effects on and off is tricky. Getting old sux.

Gen X here. I only got my first delay recently. Took me 40 years of playing. I admit I was that grumpy man who went straight into the front of the amp. No pedals for me. I'm slowly coming around to the idea. 🤷‍♂️👍😁

Another Gen X’er here. I get where you’re coming from. I used to be a simple plug and play player until I got into a 70’s-80’s cover band and subsequently, a classic funk cover band, w/ a lot of different tones, textures & ‘flavors’ that our highly diverse set lists encompassed. And while rehearsing and gigging I could start to see how the effects gave the guitar parts a little bit of sonic magic in a number of the songs. I found myself practicing the multiple pedal moves while singing which some songs required and began to appreciated being able to facilitate these cool, impactful parts w/ effects that gave the parts added emotion and inspiration. I was then bitten by the pedal-bu…I’d say bug but it was more like a gator. 🐊 26 years and 30 some odd pedals later, I’m still inspired when a part really comes together with the addition of the right pedal effect. Casino Gtr guys: pls keep up the great work on the videos and spreading the ‘guitar is life’ message!

Hi.. official boomer here... it took me several years to start accumulating pedals... probably because I bought a great guitar amp from a guitar friend of mine when I was 15 that could do great distortion if you turned down the main and turned up the input.... it is short in comparison to you but it took me to the mid-80s to buy a couple of pedals and even had that same guitar friend help me build a little 3 pedal board... it was Ibanez based and had a compressor-overdrive-flanger arrangement. It even had a built in boost and power supply! I have subsequently bought many pedals and had a rack mount setup for a while... I'm working to get that restarted and working again.... just give in to the evil.......

2/3’s of the pedals I own were given to me by boomers. Two of them I jam with regularly are my dad and his friend. My dad has always used a variety of pedals ever since I can remember. His friend has a collection approaching Josh Scott level.

So there’s a guy on KZfaq called Buddy Blues and that’s all he does is reviews pedles teaches you about the chain where to put certain pedles and your amp and he’s a pretty damn good guitar player. I like that this guy is explaining pedals. I wonder if he’ll explain the helix line 6 I still can’t figure that out.

Reverb over delay every day of the week & twice on Sunday. Pedals needed in order of importance NOT signal chain order. 1) Reverb 2) Distortion 3) OD 4) 2nd OD 5-10+) possibly more ODs, Buffer for long cables, Fuzz, Wah, Modulation, Boost and signal splitter. Running 2 amps, spread apart is glorious. Or at least 1 amp to 2 cabs. Sounds so much bigger.

The best advice I can give people is don't get married to your sound. Change it up constantly. That is what keeps my fire lit.

The typical rule of thumb for order - Compressor/Overdrive or Distortion/Fuzz/Boost/Modulation (Chorus/Phase Shifter/Flanger,Delay) and then Reverb last.

Pedals are like adding spices and flavors to food. steak and potatoes is awesome, then you get one that’s seared just right(overdrive) lol then maybe a little cayenne pepper for some heat that lingers (delay) I think there’s a pedal or combination of pedals out there that anyone can enjoy !

SERIOUSLY, FORGET A DRIVE FIRST, GET A 10 band EQ with volume and gain, you have a fully tweakable boost/light drive. Caline makes a stereo version of the MXR KFK 10 band Graphic EQ which is also dual output for stereo rigs. Next is a drive if you want more gain to your tone. I advise the EQD Plumes with a 3 way toggle for 3 types of drives and a graphic and or Parametric EQ like the JHS Haunting Mids, perfect for E and low tunings and a volume boost. Razor sharp parametric EQ mids that can turn any drive into the drive you want. A Keeley Compressor Plus would do anyone well as it has a blend.

I realised how OCD I am because I hate buying a pedal that isn’t BOSS because I need them all to be the same size and shape. I do own a Big Muff Nano but I resent it for not having a nice rubber plate to press down on. Plus it’s satisfying to put BOSS pedals in colour order.

I love Casino Guitars, but Jonathan and Baxter aren't really pedal guys. Having James sit in helped, but they have only scratched the surface. If you want to learn about pedals, start watching That Pedal Show, JHS Pedals, and Wampler Pedals. You will learn about the types of pedals and how they work, as well as how pedal placement in your signal chain affects your overall sound. Once you have an idea of which types of pedals do what, it will be easier to pick out your first one.

I think Josh's points that Jonathan might have been referring to were these 2 points #1-short delay is reverb & #2-any drive pedal with a proper 3 band eq can be made to sound just about like any other drive pedal

I am curious if anyone else thinks that the Soul Food sounds better than the Morning Glory. I have tried them in many orders and with many guitars and amps and the Soul Food usually wins imo. Has anyone tried the JHS modded SF? Best of both worlds? Worth the money?

Maybe if the amp doesn't have reverb, that should be #1. IMHO super dry is super shitty in most contexts. THEN the OD :)

All of my pedal chain attempts ended in massive boosts in non-guitar sounds. White noise, pips, squeaks, and a few waaaahhhhs. I gave up.

Yes, right off the bat you want overdrive/distortion (your preference) and a delay/chorus/flange function. Hopefully reverb is in your amp but you need verb and a delay will help with that. After two or three pedals I start to dislike all the extra jack connections.

The only pedal I'm possibly interested in is a looper. But it's still nice to know about what I'm avoiding, and also, I mainly watch for the banter.

I have one pedal (Helix LT) and no amps. Not really into effects. My presets/snapshots are basically just an amp/cab with a hint of delay/reverb. If you're new to pedals, just a get a decent multi-FX and see what kind of FX you like and what hardware the digital FX are modeled after.

First pedal should be a multi unit IF you don't know what you want. Otherwise it's drive pedal or even a fuzz (some can clean up like a drive pedal) IMO. Delay wouldn't be top 3 for me but you CAN make a delay almost sound like a reverb. Tremelo etc. would be my personal next, though. That being said, getting a cheap multi unit is the clear way to go IMO. They make dirt cheap ones that do much more for you if just want to experiment.

Speaking as a late boomer, first pedal was either a phase shifter (early to mid boomer for classic rock and soul/funk) or a chorus (late boomer to early Gen X for New Wave). Flanger if you want some meat to it.

All the effects that I use regularly, I have good pedals for (drive, comp, trem, chorus). Then I have one of the TC Plethora pedals that covers the "everything else" category. Still sounds great and gives near limitless options but without the programming of a QC, Line6, Headrush, etc....

I built my board. Big,nice, and quiet. Satisfied with the pedals on my board. So even though I look, I haven't bought anything useless lately (strings). That being said since I built this board I've only played out in 2 worship bands and only 1 did I use my board. At home it sits all hooked with wireless (easy fast hookup) under board bag. But more times than not I just plug wireless straight into amp and go sit in other room.

You forgot the most important pedal that everyone should have: you need the tuner, first or after wha/fuzz in the pedal chain, with a great output buffer (100ohm or less), or your tone will suck. Everything else is an option.

My first pedal was a wah. It really bugs me that it’s so cliche right now that no one wants to use one! Now the whammy pedal, the wh-1, is really cool, but not a good first pedal! My three would be like this video: overdrive, delay, and probably tremolo or univibe!

Boomers expect not to read a manual, and not to deal with more than 4 knobs. They expect to be able to play a few tunes in there repertoire and the pedal to sound great. So cancel out 99% of the digital things. Especially ambience verbs and delays. I am 76 and have written over 2500 reviews since 2014. Trust me I have nailed. Even the exceptions to this rule either put that exception on a bookcase shelf or trade or sell that pedal. In fact many older players told me they sold a Fuzz that did not work properly. It turned out to be germanium Fuzz every time :-)

First pedal should be an old fashioned original Dunlop Cry Baby, no knobs to worry about, pure plug and play, no distractions, and it's way cool to play with.

So mid 80's my first pedal was a DOD Hard Rock Distortion. A Distortion with a delay built in. It didn't sound like Yngwie though. That's OK, I didn't sound like Yngwie either. LOL

My first pedal was an MXR Phase 95 (two phasers in one!) 8-9 years ago. I have just about every type of pedal now, and some in multiples. I'd buy one when I really wanted a guitar but a pedal was way cheaper. I'm way into boomer territory now... but I started pedal buying quite late.

9:10 Not normally the fact checker guy, but Gilmore did not use an effects loop. His amps have higher head room than Neil Young which is the reason behind the dynamic range. This guy is funny, but doesn't seem to know what he's talking about.

I was born in 1960. I do not consider myself a boomer because my childhood (growing up in the 60s) is nothing like somebody’s childhood who grew up in the 40s or 50s. I forget the guys name who came up with generation Jones but that is me. I believe I am fairly well-versed in pedals and the order they should be on your board.

OK - am I the only one that finds it funny that the point of this episode was to educate Boomers on pedals, and all of the recommendations were for pedals that were originally made when Boomers first learned how to play guitar? Yes, the classics are “classic“ for a reason - but that doesn’t make all the candy in the pedal case any less mysterious. P.S.- the Strymon Coudburst which they showed as an example at the beginning is amazing!

My first effects "pedal" was a preamp my dad designed in 1976 to run into an octave divider circuit based on a 555. I wired up the preamp and I liked the sound so much that I never built the divider and just mounted the preamp on a spare radio chassis. My footswitch was a normally closed momentary so the distortion was on unless I pressed the switch. It sounded awesome. My first commercial pedal was a Mutron Micro V that I bought in 1977. I saw it last year, but probably doesn't work anymore. My favorite current pedals are the Science Fair and a Shoe 314 made from parts I got from my dad's stash of vintage parts after he died.

Start with a fuzz, then get a fuzz. After that, search for good fuzzes.

So ageist! 😂 Good suggestions though. Although I would take a different approach. Tuner #1 because out of tune sucks and blows at the same time. Then a flexible OD as #2, possibly a Tumnus or one of the zillion Klon clones, because Tube Screamers do nothing for me. Then a really great delay. Strymon El Capistan or Volante, a good delay gives you flexibility. Then a mod pedal if you go that route or reverb if your delay cannot do it (most can). Personally I get a tuner, Browne Protein, Cali 76 comp in the front and a Source Audio Collider for delay and reverb, preferably in the effects loop. Millions of choices. No Fuzz Face thank you though.

My dad got me into pedals. He had the old MXR phase 90, an old maestro fuzz-stain with the wheels on the side. Those were the only two pedals I ever used well into the 90s when I got a boss multi-effect thing, which I thought was a sooo cool. 200 different tones! The fuzz sounded like shit.

Those 90s effects processors, the ones I could afford anyway, promised so much and only delivered shattered dreams and ear drums! Not that I had figured out what a good tone was at the time, but now I’m pretty confident it wouldn’t be found in one of those plastic boxes!
