The notes you are playing are used in Judus Priest - Painkiller. At the beginning. Playing on the higher strings means the bass can shine through.

Yep, that's a great point about bass guitar! Don't want the low end to be muddied up with guitars - let the bass handle that!

iirc Amon Amarth's lead guitarist is on a 7-string and the rhythm is on a 6-string tuned down to B. I grew up on thrash and groove metal, and have listened to a lot of symphonic and power metal since those days. My musical voice is hard to nail down because of that >_> After starting Riff Master, an idea hit me that was my often slow, deliberate sort of thing (think Crowbar). Then I kicked it up a notch and added thrashier elements along with the groove elements and I love it, working it into a song, now. And yeah, trying to write symphonic metal I have to remind myself "Leave room for the orchestra." lol. Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow, I (Jason here) didn't realize that about Amon Amarth...one on a 7 and one on a 6! That's pretty cool! And yep, that's what I love about Emppu's playing with Nightwish. He does a lot more movement than I thought but also leaves room for everything else to nicely blend

Can't thank you enough for these videos & this channel. I am in no way any type of guitar or bass player, I'm an engineer; But I've been going down rabbit holes of how to make guitars sound realistic (when producing with all software). Also because then I can just hand over midi files and wav files to bands or instrumentalists and combine our works. Videos like these really help me appreciate and better understand how to write different styles with playing live and with real ppl. I was always much better with playing on piano and producing with a piano roll, but that way doesn't translate to guitar AT ALL lol Would love to see a follow up for more modern subgenres - like Metalcore (Asking Alexandria, Attack Attack, FIR, PTV, SWS, etc.), Deathcore (BMTH, Attila, etc.), Electronicore (I see Stars, Enter Shikari, Arsonists Get All The Girls, etc.), Industrial?? (MIW ??), nu-metal (I'm gonna get hate for saying this ig but stuff like LP, Korn, Limp Bizkit) I'm sure I mislabelled some of them and to be honest I don't care much for extreme "no it's this sub sub genre and not that sub genre" label wars; my point is moreso a video on breaking down more of the modern stuff from like late 00s/early 2010s to nowadays with bands like Bad Omens and Spiritbox (shoutout to iwrestledabearonce that belongs somewhere on the above rough genre list I made). Metal always seems to be changing, and I'm sure those simple breakdowns from the "crunk metal" era are scoffable to novice guitarists, but I would definitely appreciate your insight into that stuff.

Yeah we really don't dive deep into many sub genres (too many to keep up with!). If you go back to the basics of classic heavy metal, you'll find that all sub genres are built on that - power chords, palm muting, picking techniques (alternate/down), and single note riffs. Everything is pretty much summed up with that.

@@metalmastermind Thank you! Will definitely be watching more of your videos and trying to dive into that. Any basic recommendations for how metalcore breakdowns actually function musically? Like that 2010s metalcore breakdowns that everyone memes about the tabs being all 0s like binary? I don't understand tabs or fretboards (slowly working on that but guitar is 💯 not my territory). I'm not sure how that would look in terms of notes on sheet music or scale degrees in theory or piano rolls on DAWs. Again, so glad to have found your channel and subbed. Love from Broward 🖤❤‍🔥

Would Dio's discography be considered Power Metal?
@jamesgagne8766
@jamesgagne8766 2 ай бұрын
He was before power metal, but yes Dio was a big inspiration for power metal, from the style to the lyrics. His solo stuff is a bit too "heavy metal" to be proper power metal, but he's definitely one of the major influences (along with maiden)

The sub genres have a lot of overlap, but yeah lyrically, that screams power metal. So it's a mix of that with classic heavy metal
