I wish I could find some of them, but I recall several studies a few years ago about the correlation between metal appreciation and math/physics and linguistic talent. The theory was that by immersing ourselves in complex rhythmic patterns we train ourselves to be able to recognise and work with the complex patterns required for numerical analysis, and by needing to "learn the language" of death growls and various other vocal styles we become very good at interpreting and processing speech. Personally, I am a design engineer specialising in industrial robotics, and a good sample of my colleagues are metalheads as well. A lot of coders I have met are metalheads. In my spare time I make outrageous EDM (Think Venetian Snares but a little more coherent). I love the complexity and precision, and I'm sure a lot of you reading this will be able to recognise that interest in yourselves outside of metal as well. On that note and in my observations, there seems to be a decent crossover between the IDM and metal fanbases. Plenty of metal shirts at the last Aphex Twin gig I got to. We all crave complexity in tone and technique it seems. Having said that, I have met some of the most brain dead, bucket headed muppets you'll ever come across in our community as well, legends one and all. Because as old mate said, if you're one of us, you're one of us \m/

Ive been playing for 30+ years... Mostly metal... Started out pick, really tried to perfect my pick speed angle of attack fir arpeggios and justnfor clean and defined sound. I niw olay with figners and can di double thumb 2 fingers three..is what u usually au3 just because ilthats how i practiced. I recently increased my speed wirh fingers by 25% im not going to tell you the secret but Here's a hint.. "flamingo" what i will share is what i learned with a pick... Instead of just your wrist and practicing that speed get used to moving you fingers and turning YOUR PICK VERTICAL INSTEAD OF HORIZONTAL... THEN PUSH FIGNERS HOLDIMG PICK OUT AND PULLING IN AS THE LIKE WOULD DICTATE... WHILE ALSO PAYING ATTEMTION TO ALL THE WRIST MOVEMENTS TECH . WHERE THIS IS ESPECIALLY HELPFUL IS EXTREME SPEED AND SPLITTINGNUP FATIGUE.. AS WELL AS ANDNMORE IMPORTANTLY ARPEGGIOS... PLAYING AN ARPEGGIO ON YOUR BASS WITH THE PICK TURNED UP THE LONG WAY AS IF ITS A RAZON CUTTING UP AND DOWN THE STRINGS... ALLOWES FOR MORE SOEED AND ACCURACY TRY IT OUT AND LMK HOW IT WORKS OR IF YOU ALREADY DO IT My old metal band is PAINSGREY. ON REVERBNATION IF YOU WNNA HEAR ME OLAY... PRETTY COOL STIFF .ITS OLD BUT OK

I agree with what you said about not putting all your eggs in one basket. I did this with google play where I focused my development and marketing budget on 3 grams digital scales app, then the app got suspended and overnight my income dropped to next to nothing. But working with big tech platforms leaves little room for the independent creator to negotiate or to get clarification. They want you to guess what was wrong. Also my Facebook ads account got blocked even though i wasnt using it

I have recorded a couple of pieces of music recently which I quite like, but again they are not metal. I have trouble with writing metal LOL. My problems comes to mastering. Yes I know that I add compression on the main bus, to level out all the sounds, but it is knowing what EQ to put on different instruments to make the Bass come through. I have only had the bass 2 weeks so I am new at bass, but so far having fun.

Can't thank you enough for these videos & this channel. I am in no way any type of guitar or bass player, I'm an engineer; But I've been going down rabbit holes of how to make guitars sound realistic (when producing with all software). Also because then I can just hand over midi files and wav files to bands or instrumentalists and combine our works. Videos like these really help me appreciate and better understand how to write different styles with playing live and with real ppl. I was always much better with playing on piano and producing with a piano roll, but that way doesn't translate to guitar AT ALL lol Would love to see a follow up for more modern subgenres - like Metalcore (Asking Alexandria, Attack Attack, FIR, PTV, SWS, etc.), Deathcore (BMTH, Attila, etc.), Electronicore (I see Stars, Enter Shikari, Arsonists Get All The Girls, etc.), Industrial?? (MIW ??), nu-metal (I'm gonna get hate for saying this ig but stuff like LP, Korn, Limp Bizkit) I'm sure I mislabelled some of them and to be honest I don't care much for extreme "no it's this sub sub genre and not that sub genre" label wars; my point is moreso a video on breaking down more of the modern stuff from like late 00s/early 2010s to nowadays with bands like Bad Omens and Spiritbox (shoutout to iwrestledabearonce that belongs somewhere on the above rough genre list I made). Metal always seems to be changing, and I'm sure those simple breakdowns from the "crunk metal" era are scoffable to novice guitarists, but I would definitely appreciate your insight into that stuff.
@metalmastermind
@metalmastermind 10 күн бұрын
Yeah we really don't dive deep into many sub genres (too many to keep up with!). If you go back to the basics of classic heavy metal, you'll find that all sub genres are built on that - power chords, palm muting, picking techniques (alternate/down), and single note riffs. Everything is pretty much summed up with that.
@5adb0i
@5adb0i 8 күн бұрын
@@metalmastermind Thank you! Will definitely be watching more of your videos and trying to dive into that. Any basic recommendations for how metalcore breakdowns actually function musically? Like that 2010s metalcore breakdowns that everyone memes about the tabs being all 0s like binary? I don't understand tabs or fretboards (slowly working on that but guitar is 💯 not my territory). I'm not sure how that would look in terms of notes on sheet music or scale degrees in theory or piano rolls on DAWs. Again, so glad to have found your channel and subbed. Love from Broward 🖤❤‍🔥

I've been working on practicing improvising solos. Saw a video by Ian Stich a while back breaking down how to solo over No Quarter from the 1973 MSG performance which finally helped me understand how to actually use the Dorian mode, which sent me down a rabbit hole of learning theory and how to build the modal scales around any of the pentatonic boxes.

One thing I recommend bass players doing is to harmonize with the guitars like Cliff used to do. Listen to the chorus of No Remorse for a great example of this. This gives you some structure when constructing your bass line because you are basically doubling guitars only on a lower string, but since you have already deviated in a clear way it is easier to add your own fills without coming in conflict with the guitars.

Mixed feelings here, I always felt guilty using method 1) and 2) where you actually aren't writing anything but making choices to render some parts of the music that just sounds good as they are. Method 3) is actually what you're supposed to do as a bass player, so it's the one I use the most. But there's my favourite which is method 4) and it's soloing, there's nothing wrong about going with bass lead and play a different melody. Especially in metal with low palm muted chords there's a lot of space to take. Not sure how this 4) is not really common, and it's probably why in 95% of metal albums is really boring for bass players. Sounds like a bass is not even needed in the era of 8/9 strings guitar unless you're very good in melody and soloing. :)

One important thing to remember is that there’s no right or wrong way. There’s not even a ‘best’ way as that’s subjective. There’s only what works best for you. Sometimes we overthink things but we have to keep practicing and experimenting to find what we really want. On that note, we just released Metal Bass Master by Annihilator and Aeon Zen’s Rich Gray: metalmastermind.com/metal-bass-master/

I think it's important to give context for what's happening elsewhere in the song with a part like that. Usually we would be giving space there for another instrument to spice it up instead of ourselves like a drum fill or the bass doing something cool

iirc Amon Amarth's lead guitarist is on a 7-string and the rhythm is on a 6-string tuned down to B. I grew up on thrash and groove metal, and have listened to a lot of symphonic and power metal since those days. My musical voice is hard to nail down because of that >_> After starting Riff Master, an idea hit me that was my often slow, deliberate sort of thing (think Crowbar). Then I kicked it up a notch and added thrashier elements along with the groove elements and I love it, working it into a song, now. And yeah, trying to write symphonic metal I have to remind myself "Leave room for the orchestra." lol. Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow, I (Jason here) didn't realize that about Amon Amarth...one on a 7 and one on a 6! That's pretty cool! And yep, that's what I love about Emppu's playing with Nightwish. He does a lot more movement than I thought but also leaves room for everything else to nicely blend
