My brothers played guitar and so do my husband and my granddaughter so I’ve been around them all my life but don’t play myself. My brother lived in Connelly Springs, N.C. and played with several bands in that area. Oh, how he would have loved your videos. He passed away several years ago and at his funeral there were about 8 or 10 young people there that my brother had taught guitar and encouraged them to continue their music. They played “I’ll Fly Away” to honor him at his funeral.

I love D’Addario strings, they last a long time! I’m using 11-52 gauges these days on my Martin D-15 (a wedding gift from my wife of 23 years💜) due to that’s the gauges my painful 59yo hands are comfortable with these days. Keep on picking & singing, Miss Corie, and GOD bless.

Great video, Iam constantly adjusting the neck relief, being able to adjust the trust rod should be something every guitar player knows how to do.

For an experiment on your Les Paul, try playing everything with closed strings and without a capo. Take an easy song in A and play a root 6 A at the fifth fret, drop down a string and play a root 5 D, move up two frets and play a root 5 E or E7 at the 7th fret. For your 6 chord (relative minor) F#m, you can get it as a root 6 2nd fret or root 5 9th fret. Moving back and forth between A, D, and E will make you think of Wild Thing and Louie Louie(Em instead of E).

Thanks for taking us along on the road trip. You girls are so cute and loved the conversation. Learned one thing..., don’t mess with Katie when she’s tired..., that girl will “hurt cha”. 😊 Look forward to hearing about your concert at Western Carolina U.

Going from heavy guage to lighter strings might be another reason to have your guitar set up. Lighter strings sit deeper in the grooves on the nut and saddle which lowers the action which might cause fret buzz. Also heavier strings require more tension and could raise the relief in the neck so a truss rod adjustment would be needed. I have a cheap little parlor size Alverez that has fret buzz in the high e string all the way up the neck. It would cost more to get it set up than it cost new. But, you know what, I like the sound it makes so I'll just leave it alone.

QUESTION: I was wondering if a setup would include adjusting fret spacing. I can put a tuner on the guitar and get each open string just right. Then I go about 5 frets up the guitar and the notes are all over the place. It would be nice if, once in tune on the open strings, the rest of the guitar notes were also what they should be.

That was an excellent overview of the details of a guitar setup. I've done my electrics myself but an acoustic seems like it would be more challenging. Strap locks are a great move, that's the first thing that goes on any new guitar I get. Nice vid 👍

Great stuff. I play a lot of acoustic guitar so I enjoy any new tips. Strap locks are really smart. I sadly dropped and broke my Fender Telly many years ago. I cried for days. I love all your videos.

guitar student here, so much good stuff, Thank You!! Question(s): 1) have you ever tried a polished stone pick? (noting your sister's stonework video) 2) Why is your Mom playing a plug-in bass on an acoustic body? (she should try a 3/4 electric bass, smaller and fits in a electric case)

I never have tried a stone pick, but I might like it since I like thicker picks. She just prefers that one and the acoustic look more lol.

Excellent video. A good set up is extremely important. I am very fortunate in that I live about a 15 minute drive from one of the best of luthiers in New England. There are several of my guitars that I take to him at least twice a year for seasonal adjustments and set ups. I have a couple of solid wood Martin guitars that are pretty sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Usually it’s just a truss rod adjustment but every once in a while he’ll need to do something more. I completely agree with you about Martin strings. I love their guitars but have never liked their strings. I have a D-18 and a 000-15M and the first thing I did with both of them was to change out the strings with D’addario’s. They sound so much better. I actually play with lights (12s) on both guitars but I fingerpick almost exclusively and mediums don’t really fit that style as well. From the few videos of yours that I have seen you seem to be much more of a strummer so mediums will definitely give you better tone for that. Have you ever considered fingerpicking? Once you start to get the hang of it it opens up pretty quickly. Take a look at some videos about Travis picking, there’s a lot of stuff out there that can help you get started. You can still just play chords but you pull out the music note by note and it really comes alive with a few hammer-ons here and there. Last thing- don’t let Martin strings give you the impression that their guitars aren’t good. They’re amazing. Nothing like them. My 000-15M just sounds like a living thing with a beautiful voice.

It's pretty easy to do your own setups. You need the right Allen key and a spark plug gapper. I can't believe you work at Tractor Supply 😍

Corie, thanks for your video that was very well explained. Yet all this was new to me I have never heard of having your guitar setup. I seem to have trouble holding my pick without it turning on me or losing my grip on it. Any suggestions on that? Deb

You could try different picks. They make really grippy ones and all kinds and you might find one that is easier to hold on to.
