Michael, Syncopation is an understatement. The first time I heard DMB was when they opened for The Smithereens at Trax in the summer of 1991. I’d never heard of Dave Matthews before that evening. As I was walking up to Trax I could hear them playing inside. And I was floored about how great they sounded even from outside. After I got inside, I stood there mesmerized by their sound and groove. I’d never heard or seen anything like it. I’d like to imagine that The Beatles in Hamburg might’ve had a pretty good groove. After they finished their set and The Smithereens came on, I stayed for just a few songs and left. I had seen and heard all I needed to see that evening.

under the table and dreaming was the first album I ever bought when I was 13 in africa. That was in 1994, same time all my friends were into nirvana and smashing pumpkins. Every member of the band is a phenomenal musician! Boyd is a classically trained violinist and Stephan was a literal child bass phenom and Carter is just ridiculous! I don’t think I can name a better drummer. Dave’s guitar playing is underrated and Leroy was a legend! I’ve been waiting 25 years for any band to come close to being as amazing as Dave Matthews but I don’t think it’s ever going to happen. I hope you had an incredible time at the show! They are treating D as Mixolydian with that C natural in a lot of parts, which helps give this song its funky groove. Kind of like in a blues where you treat all chords as dominant 7 chords you can experience a tonal center while the key is somewhat ambiguous. An illusion that you technically could be in the key of your IV chord while playing the I chord with a flat 7 (C instead of C#). It's simple yet effective modal interchange. Normally when thinking key of D major we think Ionian (Major), but let's pick a different mode and still have D be the focal point. Mixolydian is a smooth choice because both major and mixolydian modes share all notes except one. Now just treat that IV chord (G) as a dominant 7 chord and think D dorian and throw in a b5 and that's the classic funky blues sound you hear at 4:53 of this video on the sax. Granted a good ear will find those notes that work over the 1 and 4 chord that aren't in D major naturally, but they are all just so in sync and playing notes you want to hear when you want to hear them and that's really all that matters.

Also at 5:24 it sounds like a beautifully voiced C/D or Cadd9/E, not A7, depending on what note is the lowest note voiced. It sounds like E is the lowest note, but there is a D hiding somewhere in the lower voicing giving it that rub. Such a nice instrumentation. This is also one of those parts where they're abusing that C natural and technically are using notes in G major. Classic bVII sound changing the C# diminished to a C major by just changing one note. C#,E,G is now C,E,G where that C major chord built on the b7 scale degree could really be the 4 chord of G major, but we've felt D as the tonal center and know that's where the resolution is.

Them, AND Big Head Todd and the Monsters. It was a fantastic show. Carter also really got my attention on the drums- and so did Duane on the fiddle. Those guys really came to play. And then, of course, came Blues Traveller and the Allmans (with Warren and Dickey on guitar). BEST. Show. EVER! The next day, I drove strait to the record store, and bought everything I could find from DMB, Big Head Todd, and Little Sister, lol. Only band I've seen come close to the holy shit!-ness of this day was Radiohead.
