My x-wife used to work in the PR dept at Warner Bros. Burbank. Prince came in one day with his band to do an impromptu little promotion concert just for the folks at Warner Bros. They played on a little patio in the back of the building. They were only supposed to play for about 30 minutes, but he wound up doing over two hours. She said it was one of those memories you divide your life by.

Was this 1991? If so, I was there as well. The promotion was for the Diamonds and Pearls album. My girlfriend at the time worked in the marketing department and told me to get to her office before they shut the doors because Prince was giving a concert. I tried to think of the best lie to tell my boss so I could get out of the office. I ended up just telling him the truth and he was a huge Prince fan as well and covered for me. Unbelievable experience.

Prince is probably the greatest artist of the last 50 years. Name anyone else who could play that many instruments at that skill level, write that much incredible music, and do it live with that much swagger. There are better single instrument players, better songwriters, and better performers, but nobody could lay claim to the entire production pipeline except Prince, in my opinion.

it always amazes me that people STILL underrate him as the elite, musical genius that he was. There are people out there that think of him like a pop star, like Michael Jackson. If they just listened to him for 10 minutes, they would realize he's more like a mix of Jimi, Stevie, and Herbie - and the sum may be greater than the parts...

Great quote and so true: "There's no difference between him singing and playing. It's a singular expression." - YES! (Prince fan here obvs) So cool to see you break down just what is different and interesting in this music. I don't play guitar but it's fascinating to watch you break it down and also play your own rhythms to it. Thanks so much for the breakdown.

Prince? Talented? Absolutely! So versatile on so many instruments. But his genius comes in on the arrangement. He knows how to arrange the simplest of things in a way that makes them sound out of this world level. He has given the fan that actually listens, instead of just hearing, so much to appreciate. The best artists do everything from their ear and their feel. I doubt they ever technically break down their work. "The more you think the less you do"

Got to agree with you. His confidence on guitar that he displayed in "flashy/showy" lines, phrases, and moves, was second to NOBODY, not even Hendrix. Unfortunately, most people didn't pay enough attention to his guitar work to realize how good he was till he was gone.

I was about to say the same thing. You either watched and understood Prince and what a master he is/was or it is just hitting people like a ton of bricks now and they are in awe. People missed out on a lot saying things like that's "not my type of music..." well truly-it is everything you want music to be.
@patrickfoster4586
@patrickfoster4586 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed up until you put Hendrix beneath Prince. That is incorrect and Prince himself would've told you so. Jimi was second to no one. Prince was massively influenced by Hendrix and not just his guitar playing but even his clothing style and swagger. Being a guitarist I can assure you both of them were amazing instrumentalists but some of the stuff Hendrix did was almost impossible to emulate. His style is quite a bit more demanding to play than Prince's. This is coming from an old school Prince fan (started buying his albums as a kid with Controversy and saw his Purple Rain tour at the New Orleans Superdome) and till this day I say that 1999 is one of the greatest albums of all time. But guitar skills? Hendrix definately gets the nod. Cheers P[>

Favourite tribute to Prince on his death was, people remember him as the sex thimble but don't always realise he could play the guitar like Jimmy Hendrix's love child.' I saw him on the Brits awards, 2005 or 6 on live TV and I was utterly memorized by his playing. His fingers seemed to move like they were liquid on the frets.

I remember this, its Jay Lenos show, but this wasnt even then song he performed live. I like the band, its a mix of 2 of his groups from that time but a step into that more focused rock sound he was moving towards his last few years. You have to notice his strat, since its very rare to see, and it is has an interesting pickup config and a floyd rose. You are dead on on that old vox, got to smash it, for me the new ones i bought dont sound the same but at least with wah wahs they are very simple and you can fix anything on them. I like to keep a pile of them around. He played that solo with utmost style and vibe.

I think my favorite thing about your videos is how deftly you can weave your knowledge of music theory together with passion for “all the shit that just makes ya feel good!” Sometime when hunting for that knowledge, one would instead be met at the gates of Theory-opolis by Stuffy McJazzhead who looks down their nose because the song doesn’t have 40 chord changes over a shifting time signature. When there is a nugget of wisdom wrapped in a catchy pop riff, I call it a “dog pill wrapped in cheese”. The audience may not realize the extent of awesomeness going in their ear, they just know they can shake their asses to it.

Man I can’t stress this enough… it would make my year to see Mike react to the a cappella group the Pentatonix! Many people react to them, half non-musicians and half vocal coaches. Now I know Mike isn’t a “singer” per say, but that’s not why I want to see his reaction. It’s his knowledge of theory that really peaks my interest. For all of the things the Pentatonix are good at (singing, harmonizing, performing), the most underrated is their attention to detail when arranging music. Pleeeease Michael I will pay money to see you react to Pentatonix - Evolution of Michael Jackson! Then maybe Sound of Silence if you’re so inclined. Michael has such a good ear for music and insight into structure… it would be legendary 🤘😎

You should check out Corey Heuvel "Crazy" cover (especially the solo). He's very talented and worth a watch.
