Well I'm a huge Sturgill fan so I'll keep it with him. I fell in love with his first couple albums and is some of the best country there is. And lo and behold he took a break from country, created his own damn genre in his latest album, and it's still f***** GOLD. I'd love to hear something from Sound & Fury. How about "The Best Clocknaker on Mars"?

Wow! I've seen Sturgill briefly with John Prine. Today I heard Waylon Jennings voice when he sang Billy Joe Shaver! From watching Fil and now you too, I realize my 1973-6 guitar lessons taught me none of this, as I was hell bent on playing every string on every chord I could. I'll be 70 in Feb. but this learning thing has really got me going.

Thanks Michael for continuing to turn me on to new cool things I didn’t know about! For anyone wanting to dip their toe into this type of playing--if you play the major pentatonic with a few embellishments from the relative minor pentatonic-and most importantly- focus on the dominant 7-you can play convincingly enough to fake your way as a country player. Thats how I started but soon found myself going down the rabbit hole of kick ass country players like Brent Mason, Brad Paisley and Albert Lee (too name a few). As a Rock player (VH, Randy Rhoads, Paul Gilbert etc) I used to brush off country playing until I realized that it is just as unique and essential as jazz to any guitarist wanting to expand and explore new territory.
