In this Guitar Technique lesson we're checking out Rolling, which is how to play two consecutive notes in the same fret on adjacent strings - which is a nightmare if you don't know this technique!

Hi Justin, rolling downward (ascending) is ok but the rolling upwards (decending) im finding very tricky. We're taught to fret a strings using our finger tips so flattening the finger out takes some getting used to.Thank you for the detailed explanation...❤

I think this is something that, to most guitarists, comes naturally with experience. However it's always good to practice

I have to agree with you there. I never really taught of it as a technique though. I thought it was common sense. Though it could be from the practice i use to do with a couple of blues and Santana licks. It kind of comes naturally overtime

Maybe, but the point of lessons is to benefit from someone else's experience, saving time and frustration, don't you think?

True, although sometimes it's better to discover or develop something yourself than to learn it from someone else.

This is actually tougher than it appears. Of course Justin makes it look like a walk in the park, but to get it fluid and accurate is a challenge. But once you have it down, your speed will automatically increase. Nice guitar BTW!

A good example of this technique is the the first part of the solo in "la Grange"...if you don't roll and mute the adjoining strings, it sounds like crap...lol Very important technique especially when playing with distortion...;)

Many thanks for this great lesson! I`m surprized that it has so little views. For instance , ZZ TOP La Grange start phrase of the solo cannot be played on proper speed and with articulation without this technique.

Hi Justin ! Very nice little series of very good praticing technics - thx ! I've been trying a little to take the right hands down/up-strokes into the equation too and need an advice. Would you recommend to use DOWN-strokes as long as you can and shift to UP-strokes when forced to and then CONTINUE to use upstrokes till you'r forced to use down-strokes again - my theory is that it would be better economizing with the time and then (maybe) you can do thing a little faster in the long run ? Any comment on that ?

That's a gorgeous guitar, Justin! I have a bit of trouble rolling up (physically up) to an adjacent string right after a bend, as the very tip of my finger is on the string I just bended, and can't physically roll any further. Would trying to lay my finger a little flatter for the bend aid me in the rolling afterwards? This might help for the lower strings, but bending the high e string and rolling to the B string afterwards with a flatter finger may be a little troublesome for me, as for some reason, my fingers don't seem to 'grip' the strings very easily when it comes to bends, haha.

Here is the problem I have. If I do a reverse roll with my fourth finger on the D and A string hitting the root and fifth of a scale, the "flatness" of my finger when I hit the root on the D string almost always makes the G string sound on the same fret, now on the fourth of the scale. Same if I am "rolling" on the G and D string. The B string inadvertently sounds. Any tips?

Ultimate test of this technique: Steve Vai - For The Love of God. And with bends before and after the 'roll' with the same note... which is REALLY tough to do

How do you roll upwards more than just one string? For instance, say you're on the B string, with the pad of your finger. You roll up to the G, and now you're finger tip-on. What do you do if you want to roll up to the D string?

I used to have a guitar teacher who did this slightly differently. He would depress both strings at the same time with his finger and every time he moved up or down the strings on the same fret he would release the pressure on both strings and then reapply the pressure on both strings. This always seemed really awkward for some reason so i never adopted it. I instead do the rolling technique as shown in this video. Does anyone else do it the way my teacher does and is it better from a speed point of view? Do most guitarists use the rolling technique? If so why? Is it just easier/better?

Probably I´m just to stupid to get the idea of this technique, but why should I just do that, when all affected strings are on the same fret and also can be used by a simple bar of the corresponding fingers?Can anyone explain me the reason for this?
@elihuechevarria5654
@elihuechevarria5654 7 жыл бұрын
You are not stupid. You just are watching it on a diferent point of view. What you said is usefull for chords, arpegios, and certain melodies. This technique helps you for sweep picking were the point is to play a melody with a chord figure i mean by thirds. Hope i help you and sorry for my bad english XD

??????? If you can't do these basic, basic guitar mechanics, you need to take for real lessons. This is not a technique...its a basic mechanic that is part of playing guitar. It's taught in part, with the basic exercises you do daily...like when you do scales chromatically.......you know?.......sheesh....

This video I'm sure is directed towards beginners. Not everyone has the money or availability to acquire lessons at home. The fact that that this man (and many like him) devote their time to offer FREE advice is truly a great thing. Wish it was around 25 years ago when I started playing. There should never be a limitation on information for those that seek it. Sheeeeeeeeessssshhhhh! ;)
