video #2 : • pt2 Barış Manço 'Dönen...
In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer and progressive rock fan Dean Wolfe reacts to Barış Manço for the first time in 2021. Dönence (English translation: Tropic) (1982 - TRT).
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

The lyrics of the Tropic song also describe the music while describing the Tropic. In the first part, the phrygian represents the 1st Tropic, and in the second part, the Mixsolid represents the 2nd Tropic. In the third part, the mixture of both represents the equinox.

Im a big Fan of Barış manço, even can translate you the songs if you want to know the meaning of dönence. He was and is a big legend of turkish culture and music. He was the first person in Turkey called "Barış" it means Peace, his name given after the World War. He was in so many countries and nearly all continents and was spreading out the turkish culture. Because of spreading out the culture, many turks was in the opinion that he was spreading the culture in the wrong way, because of his long hair, style, clothing and rings on his fingers, in the opinion of many turks, is this style what he had and spreading out to the world was "false" in their mind. Because of that in the last years he lived was the media full of critic against him. Shortly before he died, on Live Tv the reporter asked him "What are you saying to the actual situation?" and his reaction to this was really sadly. he was taking the critic seriously and was broken, he answered "this is just my style, im really spreading out the culture how i knew, I got my mustache from Göktürks and my long hair from Oğuz." theese are turkish Groups in the history of turks. After the Live Tv Show, he died in this night because of an heart attack. He also have several english albums, look for "Barış manço Little Darlin" or "Fairground" or "Nick the Chopper". He had an Live Concert in Japan, not only one. he one said "my first concert was for a school, it was for free, i sung for 1500 Studends, but after the concert i heard, that millions of childrens in japan, heard my concert, in radio and Tv, so i decided to do some more" (even for free) He also learned Japaneese to communicate with them and instead of showing respect he was singing a japaneese song "toki no tabibito". The Story of learning japaneese was: He was once invited to japan, but he couldnt speak the language, the japannese guys said to him "then you want to speak english, please dont do it, just speak japaneese or turkish, we will translate youre turkish, but do not speak english, we dont want a third language here." this was because of the relationsship of Japan and USA. His Song and Video of "Domates Biber Patlican" is captured in Africa and the song is in african style. Another Rock song is Kara Sevda, youll like it. He also had a TV Show called " 7 den 77 ye" its just the range of age belong to. He was inviting kids with his parents and giving the stage to the kids and make videos, shows, sight seeings through other countries and showed it in his video. One never forgetable thing for me is this: He was invited to a french TV show. The reporter was instantly from the beginning of the show rassistic to him, like "how is it to be a very cultured men from a culture which was barberic (meaning the ottoman empire)" or just trying to trigger him with speaking turkish things bad. Barış was silent and respectful how he was always. He asked him to take french money, he explained "so money is something we are carryieng with us right? its going around the world right? so normally we have to print something behind, what is important for us, to make the people curious about the culture to come over here, to let them think, so, can you show me youre money, the backsites and explain me the meaning of it?" by the way, he was there to share his new track "Anahtar" which is about the turkish money. the french reporter said "this is napoleon, one of the bigest generals.. this is another big general.." Barış took out the turkish money and explained him the meanings "5 Lira, is our maths professor, 10 lira is our maths professor, 20 lira is a very important architect, 50 lira is a women rights fighter, 100 lira is Mevlana a spiritual guy, 200 lira one of the most loved and meaningful sultan, our money is printed with all things that are showing our culture a bit even with things that are important for us, the meanings of it, can you now say, which culture is more barbaric?" even he could speak about what france did in africa, but this is not the topic here. The Tv Show was OFF Air, came on Air again, with another reporter which was first apologizing to him and watching turkish people.
