Reminds me of some aspects of Japanese archery training, where beginners focus just on how to hold a bow and don't even get an arrow until they have that mastered. Love this video.

Absolutely, because physics wise, holding a bow with a tight grip will negate the power of the arrow’s flight. It’s a firm but comfortable grip , but not too firm! Haha: the “catch 22” of learning an art and mastering it.

The best guitar instruction channel on youtube, BY FAR! Claus, you really have no competitors. All about how to practice, the mindset, the right strategies etc No one talks about it but you go into it with such detail. You understand our struggles and frustrations so much and many of the problems you talk about I suffer from and it's great finding a teacher who understands them and can help overcome them. Your content is so valuable, I'm so glad I found your channel. Much respect and appreciation from Hove, England.

That just confirmed the direction I decided I needed, focus on the biggest struggle and what one thing I need to overcome to reach the next level. Yes, he said one thing, however, a previous video he said, to lock things into your long term memory, practice one thing then go to something different and come back to it. So, I picked two things and it's working great, a short time on one, a short time on the other and repeat. However, the two "different" things have the same focus. It's brilliant really, thank you for these insights, you know how people learn and that's key to getting better. Brilliant.

I've been playing for 50 years. Even though I've studied with some great teachers I could never master soloing. Only recently I discovered the importance of rhythm and timing in soloing. I can't believe I was never taught that part. This video is so spot on. I only wish I discovered it 40 years ago! Love your videos and analogies Claus. I've learned so much from them. The learning peak you describe is an excellent way getting the point across. After 50 years of playing I'm still moving forward. Thanks!

Great advice! Thanks, Claus. Wish I'd heard this year's ago. I hit several plateaus as I was determined to learn to play guitar again after catching my fret hand in a 30 ton machine press. I pushed through the hard way- technical exercises/ scales on Monday- chords and rhythm studies on Tuesdays - soloing and jamming on Wednesday ... and so forth. Focused practice like described in this video would probably have saved some recovery time.

Been playing for 19 years and I'm pretty good overall having never put it down for any long period of time, even when I cut the tip of a finger off at work... but this video gave me a little extra inspiration for my own progression. I didn't realize how long it had been since I focused on one individual thing until you said that. So.. today, I'm changing that. I choose to work on tapping today. Progression will be thanks to you for the reminder. Thanks brother. Keep on keepin on.

Claus, thank you so much for answering my question. I sort of thought that you were going to tell me that I should take this class and that class and to be honest I would have followed your advice. But no.... you did something better. You gave me the foundation, the tool to help me figure out my own next step. Simply amazing. Listen... you are my rock at this point. I will never forget this turning point in my journey. The endless treading water can now end. My ice breaking begins today!!!! I'm going to do a little fun thing as a thank you. I will capture a 5 minute video Now and every 90 days for the next two years. I will put them up on my KZfaq channel and send you links so you can see the madness. Have you ever considered teaching a subscription based class? I have been taking some and would love to let you know how those are going and how they are setup if you are ever interested is starting that. I would be your first student without a doubt and I would be willing to guess that there are a couple hundred other people that would jump onboard. Thanks again for your response. Keep up the amazing work... you are such an inspiration.

I enjoy reading the comments on your videos and found someone who addressed you as "professor Claus" It made me smile because the title absolutely fits you. One thing that separates Claus from other guitar instructors is his understanding of psychology and psychology as it applies to learning guitar. The principles he speaks to apply to nearly everything else in life as well. Because Claus understands psychology, he knows how to instill us with enthusiasm and motivation, two big factors in driving the learning process forward. Claus, I thank you once again for sharing your knowledge and skills with us. You're the best!

This is the best guitar learning post ever!!! It addresses a much wider issue of what is currently bred in our societies - mediocrity. Jack Of All Trades & Master Of None. This filters down to sports too. Individuality & un-orthordoxy is bred out for orthodox mediocrity. Take Albert Collins. Legend of the blues. His style couldn’t have allowed him to play Little Wing or Stairway to Heaven. He just absolutely NAILED what HE did!!! Albert King did the same thing. Great post. Do your OWN thing & NAIL IT!!! 😀🥇🎼🎸

I’ve been busting my balls with chords lately. Focusing on triads and bringing it up to speed and seeing the all the connections. I’m two months in at least an hour and half a day at least. One thing I have noticed that my note choices during a improvised solo is getting much more appealing to the ear because I’m starting to see the arpeggios underneath the major scale associated with the progression. I’m starting to sound like if Warren Haynes, John Mayer, and Yngwie had a kid. I’ve taken what I learned from this channel and apply it to all my speed burst. My chord study I mostly got from Tomo F. and my dirty blues from listening to the Mule and Stevie. My heart is in pleasant major sounding grooves. You know, the shit that sounds good while riding in a convertible on a sunny day knowing all the bills have been payed and your girl with the big beautiful ass is satisfied 🤣.

Hi Claus, thank you for your refreshing brutal honesty. Love it bud. I am predominantly a fingerstyle player my main goal is to play leads the way that Mark KNOEFLER plays his. You have a lot of material with different picking techniques and I used to be pretty good with a pick and also with a thumb pick. I’m a late beginner/early intermediate. Should I follow the lead of mr KNOEFLER and go through your amazing lessons Barr back or should I use a smaller thumbpick to learn all this amazing stuff? Do t get me wrong here I can play at the same level in any one of these manners I just can’t help but feel that the fingerstyle may slow me down as compared to pick play? I know some guitarists play the electric with a pick and an acoustic with their fingers. What are your thoughts?
