An essential element of guitar soloing, one that to me separates the grownups from the kids, is the player's ability to interpret single-note melodies in a musical way, with emotion and expression.
There are countless ways in which one could play a note or series of notes on the guitar, and if you do not focus on being in control of how each note sounds, you're wasting an opportunity for expression, via articulation, which is the one of the most important tools that is available to you as a soloist.
The little details in the manner by which you choose to play each note in a melody is what will give you the opportunity to sound different than any other guitar player and develop a unique sound and musical "voice."
Using articulation as an expressive element is the one thing I concentrate on the most when playing live or recording, simply because there are so many options. The way in which you ultimately interpret a melody is the way you reveal your musical personality, which, to me, is the whole point in making music in the first place!

***** Exactly! I sat down with a book earlier and I was practicing some random page and it was patterns that have been exhausted in everything that I pretty much already use in improvising solos and then I had Marty's whole outlook wander through my head which made me stop reading from a book and put on a song I'd heard but never tried to play before and just work through it by ear just focusing on all the little details.

+VoyagerAbove totally agree... and that's how I feel. The audience's ears are the canvas... your instrument is the brush, your tone is the paint..... How you make your art is who you are! Music is so subjective as in art... one man's trash is another man's Michal Angelo..

Which is what every teacher and book does. They urge you to develop your own style by teaching you the basics that you need to develop your own style. Just because you're to inept to pay attention to formal teachings doesn't mean that it is any different from informal teachings.

I love the way Marty teaches, and his one liners on what NOT to do is pretty funny and serious all at the same time. I also too like the fact that he states for you to decide and make it your own. I was always a fan of his music, but I never knew he was a good teacher too! Very cool series and so straight forward, no BS or taking years to talk and then playing only a little bit. I like his process.

I love how weird, awkward, strange, off the wall, batty, odd, and left field all of Marty's playing, suggestions, etc. are. That's not a bad thing; I think it sounds really emotive, and very unique. You listen to 100 guitarists, and you're lucky if there is 5 different categories all hundred of them fit into. Marty doesn't fit into any of those, and that's why his mental approach is a large influence to me, even though I sound nothing like him. George Lynch, Eddie Van Halen, and Ace Frehley are also big influences, but the best thing of all is I sound like none of them.

I stopped trying to learn martys songs note for note precisely because of this. a prebend here, a slide there, a half bend there. marty would style up any note in a way that you have a hard time predicting how he will style any note. Now I just play them my way and hope it sounds good.

japan isn't exactly known for it's testosterone. From what I've seen, a lot of the young dudes there dress androgynously.
