Amazing craftsmanship. Videos are a good balance of education and demonstration from a master at his trade. Excellent close-up filming and editing as well. Well done, thank you! Down the road do you think you will invite a guest engraver for an episode who is just getting started and learning? Your work seems so perfect and effortless, it's hard to imagine reaching that point, and seeing what the first step on that road looks like might help people who are interested but intimidated.

Beautifull, exquisite piece of art. Layne, could you please make, if you find time, some video about hand push technique? It is also fascinating and atractive in a very special way. I don't jugde or condem anyone using pneumatic system. I understand it makes engraving work easier. I just feel that in my sense traditional hand push has got this unique value and offers this special excitation and joy witch cannot be found in power assist. Anyway thanks for your guidence in hand engraving. It's very much aporeciated. Kind regards.

It’s a pleasure watching you work and so inspiring. Is the view we are seeing the camera going through your scope and the same view you have when cutting? I like seeing it progress through the sped up portions, have you experimented with slow motion too so we can see all the little adjustments you are making with your graver? Keep up the awesome channel.

This is shot with camera positioned to the front of the scope but for all practical purpose its the same view. The Work that I do is so slow that to slow it down any further I would lose viewers. There is a fair bit of actual speed here. Any slower would be like watching grass grow. I've done one video at actual speed and got so many complaints that I'll never do it again. There really isn't anything that could be learned anyway as the movements I'm making are so minute that I can't even see more than you can here.

Absolutely beautiful work. There's just one thing I am curious about, and that's the cross hatching. Why do you just cut straight across instead of a curved line to further accentuate the roll of the leaf? Again a joy to watch a master at work.
@MasterEngraverTV
@MasterEngraverTV 5 жыл бұрын
Gryphon Arms USA I will sometimes curve the crosshatch but what most people don’t realize is that it’s too small to see with the naked eye. You are looking at this zoomed in under the scope. To the naked eye the cross hatch is 1/3 depth of main cuts and simply adds shade and texture but can’t be seen as anything distinct. Shading st this level is about creating tones.

R. Brian McNabb probably a 120 Deg. graver. These are all based off of shaping a square graver to allow parallel heels. I could do the same thing with a 105 though. This is just extremely tough metal and 120 is a strong point.

Although I watched the Video, I still do not Quote understand how these shadows are being made. Since you cut the Metal, it should appear blank shiny metal. How do you get this metal dark/Black? Is it the different reflection? If so, then it should appear dark just in specific angels ?Sorry for my poor english, I am from Germany and do enjoy your clips a lot. love the skill involved with this. honestly im not a fan of the crosshatching in it tho. thats just my opinion but if you left out the crosshatch, would it be considered a lesser looking engraving? i feel like if i requested a piece without crosshatch, master engravers would look down critically at the piece.
@MasterEngraverTV
@MasterEngraverTV 5 жыл бұрын
You are looking at this at extreme magnification. At normal viewing distance , all shading this fine just blends together. On guns done by amateur engravers you'll often see cross hatch that's far too heavy. If you have actually held a master quality work in hand and still looked at it and don't like the crosshatch you could of course ask your engraver to leave it out. Very few people have ever even seen quality engraving close up as it's all in the safes of collectors. It's not until recently that we see these huge photos on the internet that show all the tiny detail.

This is awesome I would love to incorporate these hand techniques with modern technology cnc and lasers but honestly it would take me personally probably just as long as it took to perform the work to input all the details into the computer programs maybe longer ( probably due to my lack of experience with illustrator or autocad ) but it would be amazing...
@MasterEngraverTV
@MasterEngraverTV 5 жыл бұрын
CNC has its place in production work but today hand engraving has been elevated to the level of fine art. The work we do involves hundreds of hours to produce a one off piece of artwork and that''s what the collector is interested in. An engraving collector can immediately see the difference between a piece that's been cut with a laser or CNC from work done by hand. Work done by machine is lifeless by comparison. For production gun work where value is at a premium, CNC has come a long way toward producing a nice looking product. But as mentioned, by the time create the original artwork, and do all the programming in CAD you would have to produce hundreds of pieces to make it pay.
@ER-zv1nr
@ER-zv1nr 5 жыл бұрын
that is what i'm referring to.. Bringing life to a project via cnc and lasers systems. but as stated to get down to such a fine detail the time to program depths and everything you could just do it by hand.. i still think it would be extraordinary .. Thanks for taking the time to share !

I’ve often wondered about the effect on the structure integrity of the fire arm, from the engraving. Some gun can have problems even without engraving.
@MasterEngraverTV
@MasterEngraverTV 5 жыл бұрын
There has never been to my knowledge any structural problems from engraving a gun. We engrave barrels on Colt Single Action Army's all the time and I've never in 30 years heard of it causing a problem. Keep in mind my cutting is no deeper than the logos cut into the sides of the gun before i get it. This work has been done for hundreds of years without issues.
@xenonram
@xenonram 5 жыл бұрын
No way. It's very light depth of cut. Most of the slide is just a reciprocating mass to counteract recoil. You could mill 80% of it away, as a lot of custom companies do, and still be fine. There is absolutely no danger in engraving the gun.

@MasterEngraverTV
@MasterEngraverTV 5 жыл бұрын
vapedaddy customz engraving isn’t like woodworking where you buy a tablesaw and start making birdhouses. You best bet is to take a basic class to see if it’s something you’ll want to invest years of time and thousands in equipment. Keep in mind your first couple years will be spent learning to use the tools. Short of that possibly look for an engraver who can show you what an engraving shop setup looks like. A basic shop is a fairly large investment. I suggest GRS Tools in Emporia KS for classes and tool purchases. They are one of only 3 manufacturers of pneumatic tools in the US. Finally the most important tool an engraver has us a pencil. I always suggest spending the first year on artwork as much as learning to cut. Cheers, LZ
