In this Gripe we discuss not only the problems with published suppressor metering data and why you cannot compare different cans directly using each manufacturers data, but also instances where completely erroneous data is published and advertised as gospel and where claims of being the "quietest" are made but no solid data is provided to back those claims up. Stay tuned, much more on the way.

I’m a recent subscriber to you guys. I’m a lifetime libertarian and supporter of the 2A (and constitution as a whole), but I’m a new gun owner/enthusiast. I finally decided it’s better to be a gun owner AND 2A advocate, rather than just the later. I spent a few hours today watching your Gun Gripes from the past where you discussed gun rights, politics, gun lobbying, etc. I couldn’t agree anymore that is is absolutely our civic duty to make our voices heard and reach out to our elected officials. I just joined GOA as of today after seeing one of your Gun Gripes where y’all got off track discussing the NRA vs GOA, and I was impressed with the “no compromise” rhetoric of the GOA, hence why I joined. I was hoping you guys could maybe do a Gun Gripes video on how to get more involved with 2A advocacy. Maybe you already have and I just haven’t seen it yet. I’d be interested in learning how to do more than just donate annually or monthly. I fear growing complacent by simply donating, when I know for a fact there is more that could be done. So if you guys read any of this I know I would be interested in a video on this topic and I’m sure other viewers would be too. Love the channel, keep up the great videos!

My priorities are : Durablity (I want a fairly durable can being that NFA is essentially a for life investment) but fairly lightweight. I don’t like the filly rifle titanium cans. My favorite rifle can is the Nomad, my favorite pistol can is the Obsidian’s, my favorite sub gun can is the Omega 9k, and I like the mask for all around 22 use. The thing that always gets me about suppressors in the USA is the price. In the UK the prices are way lower. Now obviously I realise that not all suppresors are equal for example the materials used in construction and the features included in some cans but the prices are way above what we would pay.
@Spushed
@Spushed 5 жыл бұрын
To fully understand noise level between 1 decibel we’ll look at car audio. Say you had a nice sound system installed and you go to check you dB for SPL (sound pressure level) competition. Your test shows you put out 150 dB. In order for you to gain ONE DECIBLE, you either have to DOUBLE your wattage output from your amplifiers OR DOUBLE the surface area of your speakers (double the number of sub woofers.) So, now that you understand this, half a decible is a big deal. Sound is sound no matter which medium is chosen to make it or suppress it.

While we are on the subject of measuring sound, how about talking about loud muzzle brakes. There is a gun gripes episode for ya! The subject is more complicated than first it may appear. Might be worth a range episode and a gun gripes episode. The subject matter could expound on how to measure sound, redirection of sound, 80s muzzle breaks being reclassified as suppressors, NFA, and S 817 bill.

Perhaps there is data already collected in other testing that would give a relative "standard' for the sonic footprint of a particular bullet. I'm thinking fluid dynamics ballistic coefficient type research where a controlled supersonic footprint of any particular design could be documented. Complete with varied atmospheric conditions. Issue cartridges may have had such research done on the bullet itself with a supersonic wind tunnel? Then it could be said with absolute certainty that a particular bullet design/caliber under a chosen velocity and atmospheric condition will always have a 'crack' at a certain decibel level. Any decibel reading above that in live fire testing would show the inefficiency of a particular suppressor design at capturing muzzle blast with a particular cartridge/rifle.

Great video guys, I have to disagree with y'all on one point. If joe blow is excited about getting into suppressors and wants to get a Amazon sound meter to measure his new can, I say go for it! And tell your buddies what can you got and and what instrument you are using to measure how well it works. If it is going to get them into being silencer owners or heck, maybe even gun owners we should be telling them to go for it. Just make sure when you are telling others about your findings, let them know what you used, and how you,gathered it. We should not be running them off by telling them not to mention how much or how quite there can is unless they have spent a ton of money on super fancy sound meters.

Will you make a video regarding what we should do when they outlaw, begin air quotes "military styled weapons" ? Also what our responsibility in this modern age should be in protecting our most precious ancient relic the United States Constitution.

Regarding the comment at 6:41, I'll start by saying that I agree 0.5 dB (when talking about audio) is not a lot in terms of perception, most people can only tell the difference between steps of around 1 dB. That said, dB is already a relative number, much like percentage, so saying "tenths of a percent of a change in dB" is... not very meaningful. For example, the difference between 5% and 15% is not 300%... it's 10%. Similarly, the difference between 50 dB and 50.5 dB, between 100 dB and 100.5 dB, and between 150 dB and 150.5 dB are not 1%, 0.5%, and 0.33% respectively; all of those are a difference of 10^(0.5/10) - 1 = 12% That said, nice meter. I recognize that Brüel & Kjær green color anywhere.

The rest of the video, btw, was good stuff. NSR is a fantastic measure because, while not completely equivalent, it's very comparable to NPR ratings for ear plugs and headsets.

The horsepower comparison with suppressor data is dead on. Every dyno is different and not all engines are rated the same way. Yes there are standards on how to do it, but standards be damned when it comes time to sell the cars.
