In this Admin Opinion piece I break down why I think gun guys should be airsofting. Now Airsoft culture has a lot of cringe, but so does firearms culture. I still think airsoft has a great ROI on time for training reasons. Its cheap, physically demanding, and a ton of fun. The downside of airsoft though is it does sound super lame in the name alone...whos idea was it to name it Air and Soft?...

It’s a great training tool if you don’t take yourself or the people around you too seriously. You learn angles, when to be aggressive and when to wait, how to hunt a person who is actively hunting you, where is a bad spot, where is a good spot, and most of all, how quickly a 12 year old on two cans of Mountain Dew can clap you…. no matter how much real steel training and tactics you have.

I was advocating for Airsoft as a training tool when I was 15 and everyone laughed at me and told me that I knew nothing and was just a kid and if I want to dress up and shoot guns then I should go in the army. So I went into the army and still advocated and supported the Airsoft community, then people said I was just a rarity. Then when I got out of the army and tell people Airsoft is good training tool they are starting to listen. Is it perfect no, but it will help you to develop good muscle memory and help develop better movements through buildings and other environments.

One of my biggest takeaways from airsoft has been target identification. A lot of times the only indication if someone is on your team is designated by an arm band. Having to asses and confirm “a threat” adds a whole other element. As well as getting reps in against non static targets. Thanks for making this vid!
@WoodlandFops

Yeah that stuff is hard, we use the arm bands too at my field (one team has none, the other team has one). Ended up walking straight into an enemy building with neither side realizing the other was an enemy till we got right up close and then had to scramble to hit eachother.

@@othlas Idk which scenarios you're playing but my field normally play normal blue vs red tactical scenarios. Ukraine against Russia is guerilla warfare which is all over the place and plays on a way bigger field than my airsoft field. Of course friendly fire happens, even with distinctive gear. And I'm not saying friendly fire is unrealistic. I'm saying that only having a colored band on one arm to differ between enemy and friendly doesn't make sense in a real scenario. The identification should be based on communication and knowing the team, it's position and gear. And if anyone can technically wear anything without being able to talk to him or to see his armband isn't realistic in a formated team, especially when the round just goes back and forth. But it's essential otherwise everybody would shoot at each other. But airsoft in general isn't realistic so I don't get the debate here.

There are definitely many skill/muscle memory carryovers between airsoft & firearms. I played airsoft when I was 14-18 years old. My main was an electric MP5-A2(with the fixed stock) & my side was a gas Beretta M9. I began just to have some fun, but later I became competitive and joined a regional airsoft team. To perform better in the games, I bought several books to study modern infantry combat & CQB techniques (back then Google wasn't a thing, we could only learn from books). I even incorporated SWAT & USMC PT into my workout routines, just to be physically more prepared. Anyway, I stopped playing airsoft after I went to college. Afterwards, when I was drafted into the military police, our standard issued pistol was a variant of the M9. The real thing was so similar to my gas gun, I not only completed the disassembly without listening a word from our DI, but also exceled in the shooting range (we have 25m marksmanship). I was amazed how similar the real M9's recoil was just about 10-20% more than my gas airsoft gun. The other thing that amazed me was that because my gas M9 & magazine was weighted to simulate the real gun, all my airsoft muscle memories applies to the real gun. And during the MP's CQB exercises, I moved more swiftly than other people thanks to my prior knowledge of pie slicing or whatnot.

We bought some mag fed paintball M4's, I think Tippmann TMC's and hid the CO2 tanks and lines in our CamelBak carriers. My buddy convinced his SSG that it was a great idea and his whole Platoon came out, we rented the place for a day, invited a bunch of local high schoolers and did 30 vs 30 objective games like CTF, compound assault and an HVT mission ending with a couple just big ass shootouts to dumps what was left of our ammo, it was insanely fun and we all learned a lot. It's always best if you can get one that closely mirriors your primary or mod it to be so. Like for me I have an hk91 clone in .308 and my airsoft variant is a clone of the hk g3 and full metal. Yes, but guess what, simunitions can't shoot through walls, MILES gear can't shoot through walls or even thick concealment, etc. Even with the most esoteric and professional of training kit, that is something to be mindful of. Play as if all the walls are notionally very bullet resistant, but be mindful in real life they may not be. Unfortuantley unless you train with live fire at yourself and want to die, theres no way around it.
@jeremyknop5378

@@Gerwulf97 this is true but concealment and cover are two very different things. Plywood is great as concealment but not as cover. If we're being honest most things make crappy cover depending on what your adversaries are shooting at you. 7.62 and even 5.56 will happily go through most cars in one side and out the other albeit tumbling usually. Even cinderblocks make crappy cover depending on the type of cinder block, if its hollow or solid if its stacked in multiple layers thick or just one and again what your opponent is shooting at you, so really best way to avoid taking a round is move move move, body armor and most importantly take them out before they take you out lol but I mean that aside there really are a lot of positives to training with airsoft but I stress again as a supplement to putting in time with your primary system at the range and if you can through competition style obstacle courses because yes obviously there are going to be stark differences between a firearm and bb gun but as long as your bearing those in mind when training your performance overall will be a lot better when or if the time ever comes where it counts. Also if airsoft or paintball is useless as a training aid I doubt military special forces or SWAT teams would do it. Sometimes they use rubber balls with milder loads but often times they use paintball and I see a lot of active duty marines out on the airsoft field pretty regularly. I get where your coming from though.

don't ever forget that real guns can shoot THROUGH some human beings...... can't use the real thing for force-on-force training and it's a heck of a lot cheaper and more accessible than sim guns. Airsoft/simunition can be an invaluable learning experience if it's done with an good instructor and in the context of training rather than Meal Team 6'ing your way down the airsoft field with your buddy Kyle who just passed a kidney stone from drinking too much Monster. OP brings up a great point though, failing to account for the consequences real-world ballistics is often neglected. But force-on-force is a different animal than live fire training. IMO both are necessary. Airsoft is a solid option on a budget and even though simunition guns are way more fun and realistic, they're hard to come by unless you're a law enforcement agency.

Took him to the local indoor field and he realized almost all his ergonomics were lacking (things like magazine indexes, pouch placement, etc. Airsoft can be a real eye opener for “Oh none of my magazines are available in the prone” or “my pistol can’t clear holster if this pouch actually has stuff it it”

Agree. I usually say airsoft is great because all the gear is the same. As far as intensity and "gameplay" I like paintball. You might think it's one little detail, but the pain of getting shot in paintball really drives the entire experience differently than in airsoft. There's more stress and a greater sense of risk in people's decision making. The idea of getting lit up in airsoft has barely ever stopped an aggressive player from attempting a crazy run through. In paintball, a fairly experienced player might try that once or twice in a day, and if they fuck it up, they'll be reminded of it by the dozen welts they have for the next week.
@kiLLaima
@kiLLaima 2 жыл бұрын
@@dogboy0912 I've done both Airsoft and Paintball, both hurts in their own way. I've done way more airsoft than paintball but at the end of the day, you're not going to die or face a huge risk of death when doing the two of them so even if you hurt, you still got some adrenaline pumping and who cares, you'll be fine (Even better if you're a masochist but that's not the case for most people, and I understand that pain in Paintball is greater overall, since I've experienced it myself hit pretty much everywhere). If you want to push a position and risk something, yeah in paintball it's way more apparent and you avoid getting shot as much as possible because of the pain, but if you care about your 'life' you shouldn't want to get hit in any situation anyway, depending on how you think, it might change a lot. For example, in Airsoft, if you go and only do casual games where you have unlimited lives and it's all about an objective of some kind where you can suicide on the enemy and allow your team to push, yeah who cares a lot of experienced players are going to push like a speed-softer. Now let's say that you have a limited amount of lives and you want to take the game a bit seriously, you're going to want to avoid getting shot as much as possible so you'll think things out way more. Same for mil-sim and such with scenarios where you have only one life, you're making the most of it and you're not going to just rush into people and die, that's where advanced tactics comes in very handy. The distance of engagement in Airsoft is far greater than in Paintball in my opinion too since Paintball projectiles are heavier so you can allow yourself to take more liberty if you don't like CQB too much. Another thing is to never forget that real firearms can shoot through surfaces and you'd want to be as aggressive as you can be to be as effective as possible in an engagement, you can do that in both sports but if you want to separate them, Paintball would be very good for CQB aggressiveness, and Airsoft would be very good for full-auto suppression from other ranges since you can output way more projectiles. Always use them as a complement and make sure to do both in a smart way where at the end of the day be like "I learned things and I had fun.". I mainly do Airsoft nowadays to test my kits and see what works or doesn't, or get a bit of cardio with fun while being fully-kitted. Tactics comes last depending on the situations and who I am playing with since not everyone wants to cooperate the way I do. Better to play with a group of people that have the same mindset, etc, especially if you want to do stacks or actually practice positioning and angle coverages plus having the very important (basic yet almost forgotten by a lot) reflex of pulling security effectively while moving or being static. There are tons of things you can do to make it viable to a certain extent, the key is to have an open mindset and to adapt while using your head. As soon as you understand the limits and reach of both airsoft/paintball and real firearms, you're set with a good base.

I had my fun years ago with airsoft. It really is an excellent training to. It really is a great way to begin/continue building muscle memory and learning new tactics. *STORY TIME....* Did a few games with some friends and 1 big event. Some of my group were OIF veterans. We did a night game on a real military base at a range that was converted to paintball/airsoft. Great experience. Then we did some CQC during an event that was a huge outdoor area. Like at least 30 acres of land. Our teams goal was to keep and hold a house. There was a river and a treeline close by. We set airsoft claymores in areas around the house and near the river banks at the top. Think of it just like the first mission of CoD 4 when you go to rescue Nikolai, and the later mission when you have to search house to house for Al-Asad in the village and farm houses. My team had two snipers upstairs, one sniper rifle was gas and chronoed at 606 ft./sec. I had my electric AK and my gas pump shot gun. My friend had his electric p90 and mp5, and my other friends had their m4's, 4 total, and a few G36s. We held the house for so long that the game refs came to us and had to tell us that it was finished, which took about 2 hours. I highly recommend those new to using NVGs try it with airsoft. It's a great tool for learning. Same goes for airsoft claymores and smoke grenades (obviously death won't be a factor, but you will get a great crash course on placement and planning). Doing airsoft with OIF vets and anything similar, SWAT, first responders, anything/anyone similar also makes an airsoft game a real valuable learning experience.

Got 60-70 people split off defending and capturing points through an extremely hilly, rocky and vegetated area great for practicing reacting to contact and using tactics, granted the firefights are generally within 150 meters and that’s way to close for comfort in a real environment, it still forces you to use “ realistic” cover and concealment and coordinate with your friends. One issue with airsoft is that the weapons and kit don't match their real equivalent in weight. I imagine that you felt like quite a badass in your Russian VDV kit, eh? Have you had a chance to try out the actual equivalent (or what's available on the civilian market) to your old airsoft setup? If so, you'd probably see that it's actually quite shitty to Western/NATO kit in terms of weight. Airsoft AKs have no real disadvantages (other than the size of the magazines, which can limit your pouch selection) when compared to ARs. Real AKs are heavier, clunkier, and far less adaptable than ARs. I also personally find the iron sights on AKs to be execrable, and the build quality on them to be similarly vile compared to even the cheapest $500 ARs.

Ya when I was a teenager me and my buddy’s were always outdoorsy and playing airsoft or paintball, We are very sneaky and keeps you fit, most gun people I know aren’t very fit they just depend on a gun instead of themselves, I’m older now but still do a lot of hiking and camping, carrying a 50lbs pack around the mountains, and I got private property to shoot, when I go shooting I’m not sitting I’m standing and moving around and out in the elements not in a controlled environment

10 years ago this was cringe and laughed at by the gun community and now it's cool. Glad to see this coming around to the rest of the industry.

I guess it took time for many people to ACTUALLY accept this was a training option. Now with many "guntubers" doing it, it helps people to go from guns to airsoft... and viceversa

One of the cool things about airsoft as it pertains to CQB training is that the Velocity of airsoft BBs and Simunition rounds is roughly the same speed.

Good! However, I'd *strongly* advise you to make sure that your backyard is properly screened from outside view by hedges, fences, etc. You don't want nosy neighbors to call 911 claiming there's a man with a gun in your backyard, and for ornery cops to show up, yell conflicting orders at you, and gun you down... only to find that the "scary black rifle" you had was just an airsoft gun. Don't rely on the orange muzzle device on your airsoft replicas to protect you against such cases of mistaken identification. Be safe, train hard, and thank your parents for giving you one badass name of "Harley Willhite" which sounds like it would have fit an Old West or sci-fi bounty hunter well!

I've been airsofting for years now long before I enlisted, got my first gun etc. I always found it funny the amount of stigma the gun community can have when it comes to airsoft, I primarily got into it when I was younger because I wanted to simulate that environment and get time in moving with kit and using the weapons I someday would have myself. It's a great training tool and of course there is a lot of cringe and a lot of people take it far too serious and get way butthurt about things or are gear supremacists and then there's the speedsofters which are a community in their own right they emulate more of the paintball mindset I've found and some of them are really cool others are douches who can't stand losing at anything. All and all I'm glad more of the gun community are starting to cross over into airsoft and many of the people who play airsoft I've found are gun owners themselves either they got into airsoft first or vice versa. If anyone ever finds themselves in New England during the Spring or Fall check out a 2 day event run by STAGOPS called Spring Offensive and Autumn Justice, They're easily the largest games I know of in the North East and every time I've gone I've had a blast they recently moved the venue to a place in New Hampshire called Feel Good Farm.

If you get a sizable amount of people with a similar goal, you can actually simulate a lot of stuff. With the right mindset and some simple restrictions, even open field stuff is viable too. One could have situations to practice strategy, team maneuvers, movement and navigation under a constant threat, and so on. Regarding gas guns, KWA is kind of ass for rifles and such. Alright for some pistols.

Airsoft definitely has some merits in term of weapons familiarization and weapons handling, communication, and, on some levels, angle taking, movement, and decision taking. Also, if you're with good people, it's just a lot of fun.

I am so happy you made this, because it's sad, countries like Canada and uk and other places in Europe where you can't own real gun this is one of their only outputs and the closest thing they can get, and for airsofters ik they always love new people in the community and I for one have learned and self taught my self real world tactics to the best of my ability in air soft, you know I can't just call of duty if I have to actually take it slow so I don't get shot the face and make Shure that I pull security to the best of my ability

I remember being 16 and super into airsoft. All the money I could have spent on actual firearms in the future. #ragrets Edit* EBB (electric blow back) rifles are available, so are low cap mags for AEGs, so if you don't wana spend the cash on a GUCCI KWA that's always an option.

I would argue that outdoors, 5 to 10 airsoft BB's = 1 "bullet" in min of man accuracy at the furthest ranges the guns can shoot reliably. even heavily, heavily modded guns like my own are pushin it at 250 - 300.

Besides the obvious "airsoft helps you test your gear irl", it breaks any grand image you have of your personal fitness (or reinforce them, depends on you). Ofc there are always gonna be out-of-shape guys that just camp out the majority of the game and get double digit "kills" on rentals but you're there to test yourself. Just don't pretend you're doing super secret black ops missions and no one will laugh at you for actually pushing yourself. Granted, I play in jungles so maybe other airsoft matches are more comfortable.
