I've seen this movie several times. Douglas & Lancaster were fairly good friends, I think, before and after the 1957 movie. As to the composer, Dimitri Tiomkin...he had a similar composing style that most folks who've seen movies with his name on music credits were similar. The Westerns showed his style the greatest. I never get tired of it. Thanks, Fred for giving us a fine piece of movie scoring to enjoy.

Lancaster and Douglas also played together in 1948’s “I Walk Alone,” 1959’s “The Devil’s Disciple,” 1963’s “The List of Adrian Messenger,” 1964’s “Seven Days in May,” 1976’s “Victory at Entebbe” and 1986’s “Tough Guys.” And they were senior versions of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn on stage in Bernard Sabath’s play “Boys in Autumn” at the Marines Memorial Theatre in San Francisco (1981).

Chris J - That's a fair collection of movies done by the two. The "Seven Days in May"... powerful! Lancaster's unique style of talk..Comedian impressionists have done some very good play offs of the style talk by both Douglas & Lancaster. The late Frank Gorshin is one of those. My favorite Burt Lancaster movie: "Elmer Gantry" (1960) For Kirk Douglas: "Spartacus" (1959 or 1960)

Had the pleasure of meeting Frankie Laine, quite by accident, and fawned over him like a schoolgirl at a Beatles concert. None of my coworkers (youngsters all) knew who he was, but thanks to my father I knew by god. I know I embarrassed him, but I think he was flattered as well. (I hope)

I have read that Tiomkin hated having to write the High Noon and OK Corral theme tunes but by Heaven what wonderful music. In many ways the credit sequence with Frankie Laine, this fine music and the villains is the best part of the movie.

Can't work out what happened to Tiomkin in his final film scores. He composed some pretty good stuff in the 50's but his score for "55 Days at Peking" (1962) is pure trite and "Fall of the Roman Empire" (1964) - apart from the excellent opening credits, is also totally second rate. I can only think his talent deserted him in later life.
@ronaldwallace7459
@ronaldwallace7459 8 жыл бұрын
+cameronpaul I don't think it was a loss of talent but the movies weren't as epic as they had been and a composer has only what the director hands him to work with. Movies were changing and after 25+ years he may have not been as challenged.
@geraldjohnson4013
@geraldjohnson4013 3 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldwallace7459 I was thinking about that too that the movies weren't as epic as they were earlier. If Tiomkin had a comeback in the 80s with the resurgence of epic filmmaking it would have been great.

@SoundtrackFred 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Vincent, especially the album-thing is a case for itself. Its clearly in the hands of the publishers. Often it happened, so in the case of the music of this weeks video "Tom Jones", that the original album that came out got a complete renaming of titles, so, for example, that the original Main Title is presented on the album as End Titles! What a contrast. As long as you have the 'go' to publish something you can rename it after your wishes, the only thing is.. does that make a release better? Fred

Yes, today I watch TCM films and invariably look up the actors on Wikipedia. When they died, other films, personal life and so on. Tiomkin was on a Jack Benny show. Likely on KZfaq. The best find was learning that Conrad Veidt, Major Strasser, was briefly interred in Ferncliff Cemetery where my whole family rests. His last wife was Jewish. His ashes are now in the U.K.

In my opinion Douglas and Van Fleet acts much more intense than Lancaster and Fleming. Burt and Rhonda are that "soft", one dimensional, and Kirk and Jo acts that emotional, intense, these Hate-Love thing between them, he treat her bad all the time but when it seems he died she is with him all the night long, filled with sorrows about his health, fear for his death at the shooting... And Douglas a not that friendly guy, sharp tongue, cool bastard, and awaits his death by pneumonia... These both are the important, not Wyatt Earp and his colorless brothers. Or that Rhonda Fleming rich Lady thing.
