I'm glad you talked about over-stropping. I used to have that problem often because I would get obsessed with making the edge too polished. It would look amazing and was extremely narrow, sharp edges but it would be so smooth that I couldn't get it to have enough bite to slice into paper. That was awhile back. Luckily I've moved on from polished edges to a much more jagged edge with a heavy amount of bite because 95%+ of my actual usage is slicing through tape to open boxes. Sometimes I also was a little too high and would get in the zone stropping and just continue stropping in one direction for 5 minutes 🤦🏼‍♂️. 🤣😂

Your right about stropping is not for knives but is for razors. Gunny Juice is overpriced by 1000%. It should cost $2.00. I don't know why anyone would use it. Who is selling us on this product?

@@brianhoffman5367 Nothing could be further from the truth. Even normal alu. oxide compound cost more than you suggest and they don't give away highly graded diamonds. Much less monocrystalline diamonds. Just because they are man made makes no difference other than much higher ability to get a very narrow grit range in the emulsion you want. Of course, there are lower cost although lower quality products available for those such as yourself who really don't know or care what the differences are. If only sharpening lower Hrc steels, or more importantly, lower carbide content steels, you can get by with a simple alu. oxide compound. However, if sharpening such steels as the higher vanadium carbide steels, you are going to want a high quality, well graded in size diamond emulsion. I KnifeMaker

This is basically a filtered leftover waste from diamond carbide tool factories. One man's trash is one man's gold. When I lap my fine stones in 1200 grit SIC powder, after it is really broken down, I lay my strops in the left over "juice" and create a very useful polishing strop.

Thank you for saying it. "Over-polishing really isn't a thing but over-stropping is." Finally! Someone who understands. Although, I'm not sure I agree about the "teeth" you're talking about. I've polished edges down to .1µm using diamond lapping film and had zero problems with them becoming "slick" or not "biting". All that happens is that they get better and better at push cutting and maybe less aggressive when "slicing". To me, this is just a difference in application. Axes and saws both cut wood, they just do it in different ways. It doesn't mean that every tooth on a saw shouldn't be sharp AF.

Top 3 Ive used. The same diamond all of these guys buy from the same industrial sources then they resell it to low IQ edc bros for 1000x markups. Here's 50 cents of diamond powder in some terrible carrier we came up with, that'll be $70 please. EDC bros are insane. You could buy enough diamond powder to last a literal lifetime for maybe $10. Could load idk maybe 1000 full sized strops with it, to the max. And once that stuff is loaded, it lasts a very very long time. No clue why EDC bros are obsessed with leather substrates either. They're more expensive and don't work as well. Hmmm, I notice a pattern here.

@@davehardan8323 50 cents of diamond powder mixed with a carrier of their choosing isn't "a car" genius boy. It's 50 cents of abrasive being sold to idiots for $50.

How often would you say you clean and reapply this compound? And when you do what would you say is the best way to clean it? Also how do you know when its worn out and time to reapply it. How does the longevity of gunny juice compare to other compounds? Thanks
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the compound and leather I'm using, but you clean it when it's built up, you basically just shave a layer off the top and start over

Thank you for the recommendations! I will buy Venev stones and Gunny Juice based on your recommendations. What sizes of Gunny Juice should I get? Using the Venev Ursa stones with up to 1500 FEPA-F. So would I go from 1200 or 1500 to 6 and then 1 microns?
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives Жыл бұрын
get a 6 which is going to be great for maintenance as well as coming off the stone, 3 then 1. because the 1200 stone is 3 micron so the 6 wont scratch it it will only help in the future get a 12 micron for toothy edges you can get by with the 6 or 3

How many passes per side would you recommend for just maintaining a blade you used during the day? Thanks!
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the steel and the use, but 5 to 10 passes per side, maybe a little more, some steel respond better than others so some take more or less

Hey Jared. 0:14 I was wonder if you could suggest to me on what micron Gunny Juice to buy for my new Strop Bros. Billy Leather Strop… My edc knife steels are as follows . 20CV M390 ELMAX S35VN From everything I’ve been reading, I shouldn’t even bother with the strop compound sticks that come with the strop and just use diamond spray And should I leave one of the side bare? Thanks in advance man! Hope all is well and Sharp in your world 🔪

Get stroppy stuff or gunny juice, 6 micron is most versatile but for factory edge 9 or 12 micron works best
