I couldn't agree with you more and it's often overlooked because it was so popular.A lot of people blame Axel for the band breaking up and I don't think he's a likeable person but his stage presence and voice is phenomenal, haters can't deny !

Axl is a great frontman. He had a history of being difficult...he often showed up for shows late, sat in his dressing room for hours past the time their show was supposed to start, and sometimes refused to go onstage at all. One of those times resulted in a riot. He also assaulted a fan for trying to take a picture at a concert. Things like that led to him losing some appeal.

There are other issues with Axl, which makes me sad. I loved him in Jr. High, but he has obvious leanings toward a lot of things that I'm not alright with. That's probably why people don't promote him as the best anything.

I think people love Axl as a frontman but not personally. Guns N Roses is my favorite band ever due to the power of Axl’s voice, Slash’s iconic guitar and also Izzy Stradlin, Steven Adlers hard drums. Check out the Freddy Mercury tribute concert with Guns n Roses and many other acts. Elton John and Axl performed together. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️ A lot of other great acts as well.

Axl is the best frontman if you ask me, or many people. You may not have gotten him listed because people have always loved to hate on him. Unquestionably one of the greatest human voices in the history of the planet. I agree you can't necessarily put someone ahead of Freddie, but Axl is basically the straight version of Freddie.

You aren't wrong. This group, musically, lyrically, is unmatched for that time. But, they were difficult. You can pull apart the lyrics to many of their songs and know they were screaming for help. They struggled with a bad image of not showing at concerts, or fighting. Axl has had a hard time overcoming that past. I'll always love them. I love Axl, Slash, and Duff, who never gets credit for his part. ❤ Great reaction

Rating the "Frontmen". I think Axl Rose, in his prime, was one of the best frontmen. One of the very best "screeching" voices, Axl's voice sounded like a chainsaw! He also had a big stage attitude, and a unique dance-move. So, why don't I count Axl in the very top-level? Mostly because he didn't last as long, or have the sustained historical impact of the "greatest" frontmen. But in his prime, Axl was one of the best, and Guns N' Roses was a great band.

'Paradise city' became a top 10 single in the US and UK in 1988 from the album 'Appetite for destruction' (1987)... that debut album has since sold 18 million copies in the US and is one of the biggest rock records of all time. The music video was shot when Guns N' Roses were opening a massive tour opening for Aerosmith, a band that was a major influence on them. W. Axl Rose (born William Bailey) was a troubled youth in Indiana from a broken home, when he left for L.A. to become a rock star... his friend Izzy Stradlin (guitar) had already left Indiana to join the L.A. rock scene in the 80's, and Axl wanted to seek him out. The two joined a band that became Hollywood Rose, and Slash (lead guitar) saw them live and knew that he wanted to work w/ Axl Rose... but the 2 would have a turbulent relationship. After Hollywood Rose broke up in 1985, Axl and Izzy joined the band L.A. Guns, and Axl suggested to guitarist Tracii Guns that the band be renamed Guns N' Roses ("You be the guns and I'll be the roses..." Axl told him)... But in 1986, Axl fired Tracii Guns in favor of Slash on lead guitar... Izzy Stradlin was on rhythm guitar... Duff McKagan (bass) and Slash's friend Steven Adler (drums) eventually joined... However, Guns N' Roses were unpredictable and could blow up at any time as a local band... They were always in trouble... drinking and using drugs... homeless and penniless... and fighting others, as well as each other... So, no record label wanted them, despite their bringing in crowds to local clubs they played in. They rehearsed in drug dens and wrote songs over months... 'Paradise city' was Axl's dreaming of making it big in music and leaving the grime of Hollywood for the good life in Beverly Hills, California... it was also (likely) inspired by leaving Indiana for the promise of a better life in California... Instead, Axl was greeted by the gritty reality of Hollywood and 'the jungle' (as he put it). In 1986, an A&R named Tom Zutaut decided to sign Guns N' Roses to a fledgling label named Geffen Records... Geffen had signed Sammy Hagar and Donna Summer in the early 80's... and they had just signed a few rock acts like Tesla, Whitesnake, Aerosmith, and would also sign Nirvana in 1991... However, Guns N' Roses were very volatile. Finding a producer and managers for the band was problematic... Finally, an engineer named Mike Clink signed on to produce GNR in 1986... He claimed that he had to work quickly in the studio because the members were not patient and would disappear if sessions went on too long... So, 'Appetite for destruction' was recorded w/ some desperation and sounded like no record at the time - heavy, dirty and unpolished... but incredible songs. But when the label heard it, they freaked and hated it... GNR was so unstable that they worried that the band would break up before the album came out. In 1987, Guns N' Roses were put on tour opening for Motley Crue... when 'Appetite for destruction' came out in the fall that year, 'Welcome to the jungle' debuted on MTV in November and it reportedly got so many requests in a day that it blew out MTV's request line. In 1988, Guns N Roses were opening for Aerosmith and the album hit #1 as MTV also aired the singles "Sweet child O' mine" and 'Paradise city'... GNR actually got bigger than Aerosmith that very year. In 1988, the band released the EP "GNR Lies" which contained 4 acoustic songs and scored another hit single - the ballad 'Patience'... Unfortunately, the success of GNR also fueled their drug and alcohol abuse, and when the band ended their tour, it got worse... In 1989, GNR opened 4 shows for The Rolling Stones, and Axl was so angry w/ Slash for being strung out on heroin that he told the audience that he was done w/ the band... Eventually, the band made peace and attempted to sober up to record new music in 1990. However, this time... Steven Adler (drums) was so sick from addiction that he couldn't play in the studio, so he was fired... Matt Sorum (drums) came in and recorded what would be 2 new album - 'Use your illusion' Vol. I and II... Dizzy Reed (keyboards) was also added to the line-up. But Axl Rose was so controlling that working together was impossible. By 1991, Guns N' Roses were literally the biggest band in the world, when they announced the release of 2 'Use your illusion' albums in the fall of 1991... Both records (apparently) sold a half million copies in the first 2 hrs upon release to chart at #2 and #1... Only Metallica's 1991 self-titled 'black' album was the competition. But problems began as Guns N' Roses began touring again in 1991... Axl Rose was always turning up late... In St. Louis, his behavior resulted in a riot when Axl left the stage, and he was charged right after... In late 1991, Izzy Stradlin quit the band... he, Slash and McKagan were told to sign off their rights to Guns N' Roses for Axl Rose or the band would be over... So they did. Izzy had enough of the band's turmoil and walked... Gilby Clarke (guitar) took Izzy's spot for the rest of the tour... In 1992, Guns N' Roses and Metallica announced a stadium tour across America, but it was a problematic run... GNR were always playing late and not playing well... while Metallica was killing it on tour. In Montreal, a pyro incident burned Metallica's James Hetfield on stage, and Guns N' Roses also ended up cutting their set short, which resulted in another riot. By this point, Nirvana and Pearl Jam had broken big... and Guns N' Roses were seen as "everything wrong w/ rock n' roll" as their popularity dropped by 1993 as the tour for 'Use your illusion' ended. GNR released a covers album 'The spaghetti incident?' in 1993, but never got to make any more new music as the band's classic line-up imploded by 1996.

In terms of "History", I like to think of Guns N' Roses as following the pattern created by Aerosmith. And Aerosmith was following the pattern of the Rolling Stones. While the Stones based their blues-rock on the early Black American Bluesmen, the Stones also created a totally new pattern. A contrast to the new pop-rock sound of the Beatles, the Stones had a darker, edgy feel. One of the reasons that the Rolling Stones are a "Top Five" all-time rock band.

Everyone loved Axl! Maybe his repuation took a hit over the years when he had issues w/the other members, he was unprofessional etc, but he's not like that anymore. At their height he was always considered a rock god. He's doing really well these days. The only reason they're back together is, as Slash said, he's a total professional now. He's legendary.

I was born in 1970 so this music is my era. My 5 top in no order are Guns n Roses, AC/DC, Tesla, Led Zep n Poison. And back then there was no internet so only way to hear your bands was buying the cassette or going to concert and Star Lake is right down the road, so we went to every concert that came through Pittsburgh. In my opinion Axl, Jeff Keith, Bret Michaels, Jese James Depree n Steven Tyler were the best front men I ever saw.

The first incarnation of this band was when members of the band LA Guns merged with Axl Rose and Duff "Rose" McKagen of the band Hollywood Rose, hence the name Guns N Roses. This was their debut album which dropped in 1987, and it blew everyone away. Nobody had ever heard anything like it. It brought new elements to the genre, without taking anything away. Every song on the album was a hit and got radio play. Very few bands can say the same. The only ones I can think of are The Beatles (Help!), Aerosmith (Permanent Vacation), ACDC (Back In Black) and Van Halen (1984). I don't know where I'm going with this so have a nice day.

Axl, unfortunately, made himself quite unpopular as a person….he’s known for throwing temper tantrums, being late for shows and walking off stage in the middle of shows. It’s too bad, because he was indeed a great frontman when he was “on”…..fantastic voice, great stage presence. The only time I saw them live they opened for Iron Maiden…..this was very shortly after Appetite was released…the crowd was sadly not interested and there was some uncalled for booing & catcalls. Axl cursed us out and he and the rest of the Gunners left the stage before their set ended. FYI ….drummer was Stevie Adler.

Learning to ignore “polls” regarding critics and fans favorites is difficult but vital. Many bands were great, influential, distinct, etc. Zeppelin, Rush, Metallica are better overall bands than GnR. That said, NO band, in my lifetime (born 1973), and I mean NO band took the world by storm as much as GnR did. In 1985 my brother came home from Minot, North Dakota USAF raving about this band he saw and the absolutely insane singer who could croon like Sinatra AND rock scream like Robert Plant. Within a year Welcome to the Jungle hit and the next 5 years belonged solely to them. This also happened to be the years between Metallicas Justice For All and Black masterpieces. Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Maiden, and even Rush had essentially lost a lot of their edge. This was right before Alice and Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana(meh), Soundgarden, Chili Peppers became the new era and the started the decline of true, artist driven, raw rock which wasn’t completely corporate. All that being said…. Favorite frontman discussions are tough and subjective. Some are great theatrical performers (Freddie, David Lee, Steven Tyler) some can dazzle with their voice alone (Robert, Bruce, Axl, Layne). Some are very uniquely perfect for their style (Ozzy, Geddy). It’s difficult to gauge what people are looking for and impressed by. My top ten, which I hate doing and in no true order (after #1): 1. Robert Plant 2. Ozzy 3. Axl 4. Bruce 5. Geddy 6. Layne 7. James 8. Ronnie James 9. Ronnie Van 10. Freddie Also rans: Coverdale, Geoff Tate, Steven Tyler, Lizard King, Eddie, Chris…..

The Boston debut album dropped in 1976, like Hiroshima, GnR debut Appetite for Destruction in 1987, like Nagasaki. Not many debuts since to hit that hard. Pearl Jam's Ten (heard whole concert played on the radio in 93, they sound just like the studio version live) & Lady Gaga's Fame(most tracks were played on the radio, & influenced me to buy it when no other artists did, her talent stuck out) come to mind. Others can comment with other entries.

I don't mind being controversial. Axl and GNR were the absolute best, and they rank, imho, among the best of all time. A lot of people get upset if they're compared to Zeppelin or any number of great bands, or they don't like Axl as a person. I don't want to marry the man, so I could care less about his personality. I loved his voice, energy, charisma and stage presence. And I've seen Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, the Stones and so many more, and I love all of them, but when GNR hit the scene, they were exciting, raw and real - things that were missing. And I still love listening to them, possibly more than any other band. Thank you for the great reaction!

There's Axl the Talent and Axl the Person. There are not a lot of people that'll hate on Axl the Talent. He was a phenomenal front man with immense talent. That's undeniable. It's Axl the person that's the issue. Not entirely his fault...childhood trauma, suffered from manic depression, ill equipped to handle exploding into a megastar overnight...there wasn't a slow rise...they went from years on the LA club scene to international superstars skipping everything in between. Not everyone can handle that. At the time of this video things were pretty okay. Izzy (dressed like a pirate in this video, lol) was Axl's childhood friend and could keep him in check, along with Slash's chill attitude which helped too. When Izzy left it was the beginning of the end...they stuck around a few more years but Axl was getting worse...showing up late for shows or not at all, fighting with fans, security, and bandmates. One of the final straws was when Axl held them hostage backstage before a show by refusing to go on stage unless they all signed rights to Guns n Roses over to Axl. They did it cuz the fans were waiting. Nobody wanted to be around Axl anymore. Slash walked and that was pretty much it for 20 yrs.

mannnnn you HAVE to watch their live stuff too. I don’t like Axl as a person but he’s definitely a good frontman. I definitely recommend Welcome to the Jungle live in Tokyo 1992. Or Rocket Queen live at the Ritz, where the drummer is seen going OFF. The drummers name is Stephen Adler, and he was fired in the late 80’s. Izzy is definitely underrated too as a guitarist, who also co-wrote a lot of their songs. I really hope you go down the rabbit hole with these guys, it’s most definitely worth it!

When it comes to front men they don’t get much better than Axl. Trust me, I’ve seen just about every 80’s90’s and 00’s band. It always took a song or two to get the sound quality right but once they did, he literally ran around the stage for 2 1/2 - 3 hours. One of the greatest bands of all time. It wasn’t just Axl though, they were all talented.

Dude, you are right along my lines of thinking on the front man topic. For me Freddie Mercury is unquestionably the number one but Axl Rose has no close competition for number two. Axl has stage presence and charisma that immediately puts him right in the Mercury and Jim Morrison league. But he's a much better singer than Morrison or other charismatic legends like Steven Tyler or David Lee Roth. All string singers but aside from Freddie Mercury who is a league all ti himself, Axl Rose is a much stronger singer than all the others. It's officially established that Axl is the most versatile singer of all time with by far the most range. There are singers who hit higher notes than he does and there are singers with more impressive low notes but there's no one person who is so near the top of both lists. The guy hits high notes that rival Mariah Carey yet he can also bust out low notes that rival the very best there to. The same human being shouldn't be able to hit those extremes. I'm partial anyway to extremely scratchy voices like Janis Joplin and Rod Stewart. Axl along with those two are the big 3 for the scratchy voices. But Axl takes his notes places where he loses the scratchy sound. He's a freak if nature when it comes to pure versatility. And his natural stage presence is undeniable. Like him or dislike him, he commands attention every moment he's out there. I think what hurts him is his bad reputation for outbursts and unprofessional attitude in general. He is what he is. At least he's real. He's one of those guys like Gene Simmons or David Lee Roth who a lot of people just hate as soon as they hear his name. I dig Axl. Outside of Mercury, Axl is easily the best front man of all. Honorable mention to the most underrated, often unnoticed singer of all Meatloaf. Check out any Meatloaf performances. A world class voice by any standards with a unique stage presence that captivated all attention every moment he's on stage. Steven Tyler is undeniable as well to be best the top of the list. I also can't think of any better duo of lead singer and lead guitar than Axl and Slash in the early 90s they were both the absolute greatest in the business at what they do, combined in the same band. Even though their personalities off stage were oil and water, they complimented each other perfectly on stage and in the studio better than any others I can think of. To see the extent of Axks difficult attitude check out Guns N Rides VH1 Behind The music. And to see the very sad extent if drummer Steven Adlerd awful drug addiction check out the season of Dr. Drew's Celebrity Rehab he was a part of. The band was dysfunctional even by rock standards.. they made brilliant music but it's actually a miracle they even lasted the few years they did at their peek.

Axl Rose is the best front man of all-time. No male rock singer has a voice that compares to his, it is so powerful and so unique. His voice is a force of nature, a musical instrument all by itself. The reason Axl is so hated by many fans, including myself, is that he is responsible for the band breaking up after the Use Your Illusion albums, he changed the direction of the band from sleaze rock in Appetite For Destruction to a more produced style, bringing in piano and an orchestra, but for me, the worse thing he did was not show up when the band was inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of fame. That should have been a moment to bury the hatchet and do one last performance for the fans, instead he gave a big middle finger to the fans.

Axl isn't one of the greatest frontmen. He's THE greatest frontman, love him or hate him.

I don't agree with this beubg their best. November Rain, Don't You Cry, Civil War, Knocking on Heavens Door and Live and Let Die. Their Use Your Illusion albums were big hits. Lot to go through before picking their best.

He was awesome. But he pissed a lot of people off…. I think that’s why he isn’t so popular. Once they blew up.. so did his ego!!!! Half ass shows. Late, even cancelled at times!

Yes. I picked Freddie Mercury as best front man. But check out Jim "Dandy" Mangrum from much earlier. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtF6frNksLedY5c.html Legendary frontman from the 70's. The best front men interact well with the audience and with the rest of the band.

Whats the point of us watching this when you already know the song??? This defeats the purpose of having a reaction video!

If a frontman causes the problem s axl did for the band it kinda cancels out points for talent and while he's talented, he's a pretty crappy frontman because of his behavior.

Axl was a jerk. He even let Slash go. He was just a jerk, and for him to have so many bands competing back then, people just turned away. You can't be an asshole to your band members and fans and stay on top. Bon Jovi came along and knocked them down. They were up against Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Scorpions, AC/DC, Motley Creu, Aerosmith....so many, and the fans would turn away based on attitude. He did have a great voice, but so did the others. Jon Bon Jovi was more likable. You can be #1 one week then in an instant fall hard. There was always someone right behind you.

Van Halen. too, with David Lee Roth who was a great front man in his day. And Queen were still around with Freddie. Axl Rose didn't have a prayer. Duran Duran with Simon LeBon.

Pretty much what I was going to say. People just got tired of his antics so he just doesn't get mentioned with the other greats of the era anymore.

Axel is good on the album. He's an awful live performer. I saw them with Metallica in 1992 and, perhaps it's because they just melted our faces for 2 hours(with Faith No More opening), but GnR just felt flat, and Axel's 30 minute paino solo during November Rain didn't help.
