Apparently the backstory to the famous riff was that Slash used it as a warmup exercise. Axel heard it, liked it and attached a poem he wrote to it and there is the song. Slash said he always hated that riff but grew on him a little as the years went on.

After seeing your analysis, I had to subscribe. This video was a great reminder why I stopped going to concerts. No, folks, you can't turn back the hands of time. From the moment Slash began the song, there was no passion. And Axel just blows. We saw Slash with Myles Kennedy on vocals years ago and he nailed it. The saddest part of the video is knowing by the expressions of the faces in the crowd, some paying those extravagant prices might have thought this was good.

It's a cash grab business deal based on nostalgia. Motley Crue and the latter era David Lee Roth reunion tours with Van Halen before Eddie died was the same thing. And the 2007/2008 Police reunion tour which unfortunately Sting later expressed regret doing. There's no passion with the band members anymore, they are just collecting big paychecks to crank out the classics before going their separate ways and reuniting again at the next show.

I perfectly agree. I’m a huge gnr fan, i have some records you people wouldn’t believe but actually…no way. Axl is over, yes he can sing low range songs but he is well appreciated not for them! Slash plays with no passion and souls, he likes Coma Slither and few few others. I see him much happier with SMKC! Goin’ to a gnr concert now is like going to a restaurant where you eat bad and pay a lot. So why do this?

I'm sure many of their fans are just happy the original members were able to settle their differences, and perform together again. I always thought it was strange that "Sweet Child O' Mine" was considered one of the great guitar riffs. But, I can see why some think so. If you got into music when I did, or right after, you'd think that riff, song and music video are iconic. I think with the original members, Guns N' Roses are still worth seeing.

Awhile back i attempted to learn to sing like axl. I went down the rabbit hole. Even back in the day he was hit n miss live. But, damn, when he was on he was incredible! I figured out the basic technique - combo of low belly push with raspy head voice. That's why axle sounds like weak falsetto often now- missing that low belly air pressure and has more than a few fried vocal chords im sure.

I’ll always love this band and I saw them live back in 92 but you are spot on with this video. It’s great to see someone honestly talk about his vocals. It’s sad that he now sounds more like Mickey Mouse but I’m happy they’re back together for the nostalgia factor. Maybe it’ll help if the band played the music a whole key or more lower so he doesn’t have to strain. That’s what they did for Robert Plant when Zep reunited for that show a few years back

Axl's voice is shot. He's 61 now and it wore out from years of abuse and age. It happens to the best of them. Vince Neil can't sing anymore, David Lee Roth can't sing anymore, Paul McCartney sounds very elderly, Elton John can still sing in a limited expressionless lower register but his highs and falsetto range were gone decades ago, Jon Bon Jovi can barely sing anymore, Geddy Lee's voice during the final quarter of Rush's career was shot. Father time catches up to all these guys. You shouldn't be personally attacked for pointing out the obvious. Axl today sounds and looks like somebody's drunk middle-aged uncle doing a bad impression of his younger self during karaoke night.

Literally everybody can hit the 2 notes robert smith sings… be serious… you can compare axl to Bruce Dickinson and people like that, but robert smith… cmon.. is like comparing him to mick jagger.. I mean singin high notes is very different than singin 99% o the cure repertoire. Axl’s voice is completely shot, but he still could sing any robert smith songs.. and btw robert smith is 64 axl is 61…

I saw them 2 years ago and it took the first half of the show for him to warm up to sound decent. I do realize his early vocals were going to be difficult to reproduce if atill performing in his later years. Only a handful of dynamic singers can do well like Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson in their later years. Talking about singers that have a dynamic and demanding vocal atyle that is a strain to their vocal cords Im a huge fan but also a realist

You know, if they just fire Axel and toured as an instrumental band, I’d go see them. Though really I find the Gibson/Slash corporate connection boring and ridiculous. How many Slash Les Paul guitars have Gibson made and why? Well, $$$$$$$. He’s not ‘the’ iconic Les Paul guy to me. It sours me even more on the band, which is saying something. For the late 1980s, I thought they were above average for mainstream rock. By the early 90s, they were a total joke, mainly due to Axel. Ok, done venting now…but not the band for me.

That was embarrassing. Mind you at Glastonbury it was difficult to clearly hear his vocals a lot of the time so that worked out alright. I suppose on the positive side a band not firing a singer when they can’t cut the mustard any longer suggests their friendship means a lot to them. Deep Purple should retire Ian Gillan but again their friendship probably stops them doing it. I think it might be different with the musicians in a band. When they start getting things wrong it’s goodbye, friend or not.

It's the falsetto. Axl wants to keep the original sound of those songs, but he has ruined his singing voice to a point of no return. Everything went all wrong in the mid-2010s from where he had the raspy voice, but then he lost in once Slash and Duff reunited with him. Hell, Paul can't sing the way he used to due to him ruining his voice with the likes of Helter Skelter and some of his solo songs too. It's also a way to keep the voice for a whole show. Falsetto isn't a great technique for everything, but if it lets you keep your voice the way it is for long tours, it's better than being Vince Neil that's for sure. Axl wants to be Ozzy, but lost his voice overtime while Ozzy still has his. I do want to see what they got for the new album for sure and when they'll release it.

I can see why people don’t like them, because there was a ludicrous amount of hype around the band. I would have loved to enjoy this gig, but I cannot get past Axl’s vocals now. He can’t hit the high notes with power so he has resorted to this toneless falsetto. And I enjoyed his voice on the original recordings! Hi Larry, I’ll start with saying I am not a fan at all, I neither like nor dislike them. But I watched your video just now then Wikipedia’d Axl Rose. It said he is considered one of the greatest singers of all time. Also, just briefly read the section about legal issues. I’ll leave it there. I have to get ready for work.

You see the 10's and thousands of fans? I bet most of them know that the GnR of today is not gonna be giving the same GnR performances from 1992. But they are there anyway, and they are having a good time and the band is having a good time. Herein lies the entire point.. that the band is with us today, with all of 40 years of wear and tear and not hiding any of it. Fans are just happy, that is 2023 with all the crazy in the world that's happening, that the GnR escape button is still there for them...

The list of 80's rock stars currently embarrassing themselves on tour (either by "singing" like this or lip syncing) could fill a book. It's pathetic.

I was expecting this to be another joke video like you did a few months back with your bad vocals instead of Bon Jovi’s, and I also think you did it with this song, those were really funny, but in the end, this is kind of like that I guess…

Its not terrible, but Axl is def not the same as he used to be.. The music however. Slash and Duff are still really good. I can see why you would think that way about Axl's voice..

You are spot on Larry, Sparks were awesome at Glastonbury but as usual the only thing being said about them is the fact they were joined on stage by Cate Blanchette. Makes my blood boil. Anyway, hope you have the best time when you go to see them in Toronto next week. Let us know how it goes.

I wasn't, then was a GnR fan back in the day, buying up all the singles and bootleg records I could find, listening over and over. By the time Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 came out, I was burnt out on the band. Like you mentioned, they didn't put out much after that. Chinese Democracy was meh for me, all that waiting for a mediocre album. (IMO) I did see them quite a few times throughout the years and saw them once since their "reunion". That once was enough. I can't stand Axl's falsetto or whatever he's doing now. I don't know if he's been taking vocal lessons (doesn't sound like it to me), but he'll need to before I seriously consider seeing them again.

And he's been doing the Mickey Mouse voice for about 20 years at this point. He was hit or miss at the Hammerstein shows in 2006, got better as they toured, but he hasn't been consistent vocally with his own material since the 90s.

Ya still love Appetite. The Illusion albums are pretty spotty. My god like a lot of the 70’s and 80’s guys that can’t do it anymore that is just awful. Yet look at the crowd and how much they had to pay to listen to that. Tho people want to down backing vocals? I don’t know seems needed here for sure 😂
