Tired of dragging a bunch of stuff out to the range when you want to do a little Black Powder Revolver shootin'? Guns of the West offers this neat little kit to make Paper Cartridges just like Great, Great, Great Grandpa might have used in the mid-1800's. You can get this kit in the most common calibers of BP revolvers and when the weather is bad, sit at your bench and churn out some pre loaded Black Powder fun!

I really appreciate the quality of your videos. They are well done and very educational concerning black powder weapons. I used to think I wanted to make a black powder rifle as you have done in previous videos. You taught me these weapons can be very dangerous if not handled properly and they require a lot of maintenance after shooting. For that I am thankful

Don't let that scare you away from Black Powder. They may require more maintenance but they will help you understand the mechanics of firearms and when treated with respect, they are tons of fun. All weapons are dangerous but when handled properly and safely they are part of an extremely enjoyable hobby. Thank you for watching and I hope you stick around to watch many more of my videos!

I live in Sweden and here we don´t need any license to own and shoot with black powder guns that is made in 1890 and before that. But the new made cap and ball revolvers from Italy we must have a license to, strange laws here. I own an original Remington 44 1858 and I have been to the shooting range once with it and I really loved to shoot with it. It is much funnier to need such many things to be able to shoot with the cap and ball revolver and rifles than new guns that only need new bullets. I have ordered a paper cartridge kit from Dustin too and can´t wait to get it to start making my own paper cartridges. Thank you for your great video.

We also don't have any special requirements for black powder firearms here in the US. They are a whole lot more work than modern firearms but they sure are a lot of fun. I would love to have an original Remington or Colt, they sure are iconic firearms. Thank you very much for watching!

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview I really hope to get some more Pyrodex from the shop where I bought my first Pyrodex, but now they don´t have it, but they told me that they will get more, but they don´t know when. Otherwise I must try to make my own black powder. I´m happy that it is possible, but I must be careful if I must make some. Most gun shops want to see a copy of a license, but it´s silly when owning and shooting an original cap and ball revolver of other old guns and rifles is allowed, but to buy black powder seems more difficult. Have you made black powder by yourself? One of my friends loaded his Remington 44 in his garage, but with no bullet, instead he pushed down a piece of tinfoil he made to a ball and pulled the trigger. It went through a wooden board. He didn´t knew how powerful that gun was. These are really American masterpieces. my Remington costed me about 2060 $ when I bought mine. How expensive are the originals in USA? I have shot with an Italian made Remington long time ago and it misfired quite many times, but my old one have never misfired, the caps only use to fall away. I use caps with the number 1075. I hope it´s the right size, but I squeeze them a little and it works little better then. Now I have bought a capper so it will be easier to load the caps.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview Жыл бұрын
@@samspencer582 I have not made my own black powder but it is legal to make here, in some places. Pyrodex is less regulated because it is not considered as an "explosive" like black powder is. I have seen the prices for originals around $2000 and up to $10,000+, it all depends on the condition and the history of the gun. I have used #10, #11 and 1075 caps on my reproduction revolvers, some split, some fall off and some have parts that fall into the hammer and jam things up. I have a couple cappers, an inline and a Ted Cash capper but almost never use them. Some of them don't fit on the cylinders of certain guns unless you modify either the cylinder or the capper, so I usually just use my fingers and a piece of wood to seat them. I have a few black powder videos on my channel and I plan on doing more soon, they really are a lot of fun. Thanks again!

Excellent review. I have the .44 kit from Dustin and love it. I was new to BP revolvers and really like using the paper cartridges and the 'bore butter'. It splatters a bit but the guns clean up easily and leaves no residue in the bore. I bought a bunch of wads and don't use them because I like making the paper cartridges so much better than the 'traditional' loading. I enjoyed your video, thank you for sharing it with us.

Being an Artilleryman, I use Dustin’s kit to construct “powder bags”. I drop in a cardboard fiber wad over the powder and glue. These are carried to the match in an old styrofoam cartridge box; and 10 loaded in the cylinders under ball; but not capped. 60 total (for a 6 stage match). At the loading table, I simply drop in the charges, seat the balls, and use a snail capper. Amazingly fast C&B reloads. I should note that APP/FFg is a NO LUBE powder; so that little cardboard overpowder wad makes me feel much safer. Last match 60 for 60! No cap jams. No misfires. No hang fires. No cap loss. No sympathetic chain-fires. No cleaning. Of course, I, not the Piettas, nor the cartridges did miss 1 Target! Clean matches are highly overrated. GREAT KIT!

The 36 is a bit more difficult to make than the 44 for me. I just use my powder flask for charging the hulls... what is cool is that the funnel is perfect for not only well.... a funnel but I put the husk up a bit 1/8" or so and the funnel actually has a nice taper which slightly bells the husk I am using round ball so the flare really helps especially on the 36. as you say the husks are delicate and I have saved a lot of grief just by using a set of tweezers for a lot of the handling

If it's cigarette rolling paper, you don't need to use the stick glue when rolling the initial tube, it's already got an edge with glue (and licking that is faster than using the stick). If you're using hair rolling papers (which I think are a little more resilient than cigarette rolling paper), you would want to use the stick glue forming the tube. If you've got a powder flask with a pre-measured spout on it, you wouldn't need to fiddle with pouring the powder into the red thingy, using the funnel, etc, you can just dump the right amount of powder directly into the paper shell.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview 3 жыл бұрын
If you try to use the cigarette rolling papers glued edge, it wont be long enough to go around (slightly larger diameter than a cigarette). I do need to get a couple different spouts for my flask, that would definitely make it quicker and easier. Thank you for watching!

Excellent video. I’m still on the fence about lube. On a hot day here in Southeast Texas, that stuff will melt and run right out getting lube all in the holster. Not sure how the old west folks handled that. Especially if the pistol was worn in the belt without a holster. Make a mess in your britches. If you shoot right away, no problem. But, carry it around all day in a belt or holster, it’s probably gonna melt and run out.

I've been shooting alot of them, all from this kit. I punched a bunch of felt disks that I simply finger smear a small amount of bore butter on with my fingers. I make the paper tubes about 1/16" of an inch longer. 25 grains of Tripple Seven powder goes into the cartridge, followed by the lubed wad, pack it down a bit then glue and place a ball on top. I put my nipple pin in each cylinder prior to placing cap. This makes sure the nipple is clear and exposes the powder to the cap fire. Cigarette papers are better and leave little to clean out. No hang fires just good shooting. Try this with rice cig paper, burns really clean and the wad does a good job of wiping the cylinder and barrel.

Do they leave any deposits in the cylinders after some use? And how clean do they burn?
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview 3 жыл бұрын
There is some paper left behind but I didn't have any problems removing it. I'm told the paper can be nitrated and it will burn completely away, I have not tried it yet. Thank you for watching!

Cigarette paper isn't the best to form combustible's with. Linen-based paper was used originally. I've found the 13.5# Bienfang Graphics 360 works well. The paper should be treated with potassium nitrate to ensure complete combustion. Cigarette paper is rice paper that has been treated with a flame retardant and will leave un-burnt shards of paper behind in the chambers. Original cartridges were coated at the factory with a blend of beeswax and mutton tallow covering the bullet up to the junction of the paper. This thin coating was enough to keep the fouling down on the cylinder pin. Original cartridges were only manufactured with conical bullets.

Using round balls was more difficult to put together, conical bullets would have been easier to assemble for sure. Nitriding paper can be a little dangerous for the average person to do, but I agree, it would have worked much better. I think there may also be laws against shipping nitrided paper too. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching!

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview Nitrating paper is as easy as making hot cocoa. Food-grade powdered Potassium Nitrate can be had in the food canning section of the larger supermarkets or on-line. I started making combustible rounds over 40 years ago. With the new Eras Gone conical molds my cartridges are virtual duplicates of the originals and operate accordingly.

@@johnmcdonald587 2hat do you use for a cartridge former?
@johnmcdonald587

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview I'm using hand-carved hard wood dowels like I learned back in the late '70's. Then crunched the numbers to create the flat cone pattern. I load both Navy and Army caliber cartridges identical to the issue military specs. These modern former designs take all the guess work out of the process. Tim Shaner at Mesa Winds also has a good former machine-turned out of aluminum. When I get ready to crank up another production run I'm going to give one of them a try. I have over a thousand made up tubes put away.

@@johnmcdonald587 you definitely keep the traditional way alive, that's pretty cool! I'm going to look into the paper and nitriding process you recommended. Thanks for your very knowledgeable advice. I hope you've subscribed and can offer more input in the future.

I don't think there would be enough room in the cartridge for a wad too. The paper would also insulate the wad from the barrel a little bit anyway.

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview I would bet a very thin wad of bees wax foundation would easily fit over the powder. I used them in my 4570 loads. I also have a lube ribbon maker in both 1/16" and 1/8"....the thinner ribbon might also work as a grease cookie. I cut them using a modified empty .45 shell casing.

No, if the lead ball is the right size and it shears off a small lead ring all the way around the chamber, then it should be sealed properly.
