Gus is definitely one of the top 50 guitarists on the planet. Not only in playing abilities, but phrasing, writing..etc. Enigma of life is just an example of what he is capable of writing! Great work Gus!

I’m not a player but hearing all the details is amazing. Satch has been my favorite for many years and he brought me into the instrumental guitar world that I love. I saw Satch in Dallas and then you Gus in 2017 or 2018. You’re both amazing players.

Thank you so much, Gus, for this. Meant a lot, after a week of hard work, watching two amazing guitarists talking about Music and Gear. Really unexpected, and really kind of you to share it with all of us.

Really amazing to see these types of videos. This is so much better than any normal interviews that have the same old questions and just a lack of understanding.

I have a serious regret. Joe is down to earth because he speaks with us. My deepest regret is that Prince never gave us this and he inspired millions. It's amazing that our heros take time to just talk to us. Prince... My regret is he never thought that we would have just loved to hear interviews from him like this.

Great interview - I can relate to all of this. Gus, you rock as a person and a player. My cat Apollo says hello to your cats. One thing I'm hearing from all my musician pals - they want more original Gus G. material with vocals. My goodness, you were incredible on the Fearless tour. We are still talking about it. Jaws on the floor.

Joe if you're out there - I know exactly what you mean about finding the proper tactile response. There is the stage/performance fatigue factor - that you talked about - and the more direct effect, which is that loud amps respond entirely differently than at lower volume, and getting that balance is not just about being able to control the sound at volume, but affects your mental fatigue over a set (or multiple sets), and affects your tone in the immediate sense, since tone is your hand articulation, but also - particularly at high volume - is the feedback loop between your brain/ears and your hands. Many factors involved, and yet it's simple - you just have to figure out what feels good at volume, and over time at volume. I too prefer the more "wide" voiced amps. I use ENGL's and also Gus's choice of amps is one of my favorites - Black Stars, although I have only played a Black Star head at volume once. Gus's live tone is amazing - it sears and roars, but is tight enough without sounding overtly tight.

I'm with Joe - Marshalls are the foundation. I actually play an ENGL (which is just a ballsey Marshall sound) as my main. But I use a Vox for some tonal variation in composition. I've played on Boogie Rectifiers for years, and I did a Mesa MK IV for a while. But I always come back to the JCM 800. Plexi's are good to have around if you can swing it, since they have that muscular growl in the the lower mids. Sometimes that tone is exactly what a tune needs. Dirty Shirley's are also a great base tone. And if I ever get my hands on a Cameron CCV, I will acquire that with vigor.

There not only stellar players, but write/compose there own music. Very time consuming work fans don't see. Studio practice, until execution is within high standards. Video with schon/satriani is none other than stellar, trading licks together.

I play unplugged alot until I get down what I'm playing because tone is in your fingers it's not the amplifier and distortion will cover up alot playing unplugged there's nothing it helps me play cleaner if it sounds good unplugged it'll sound great plugged in, obviously when you're a beginner you have to because you have to learn how to mute unwanted string noise etc.

It's pronounced saun as in sauna. It's French for "without an amp".

25:00 Satch compared various guitar tones by reamping into various gear, after recording the clean DI guitar.. but pro recording engineers dont ever recommend reamping because the tone doesn't come out the same, a tonal quality is lost in the process of reamping, a recording engineer would always want to record into the final signal chain with a choice of analog preamps, because the analog preamp is a very important part of the tone, the idea is that the front-end interface/preamp's transformer provides the characteristic enjoyable tone of everything which follows in the signal chain. This aspect is what doesn't make sense about what Satch is explaining here about using a Sansamp VST vs. Reamping all his other gear.
