Shortly after Werner is invited to evaluate the construction site, he is introduced to Gustavo.
Season 4 Episode 5 - Quite A Ride: In a flash forward (taking place during Breaking Bad's "Ozymandias"), Francesca quickly shreds documents and Saul frantically collects cash, mementos, and paperwork from his office before contacting his "disappearer" for a new identity. In 2003, Jimmy convinces a customer to buy several prepaid cellular phones as a way to maintain his privacy and then gets the idea to profit by reselling prepaid phones on the street. He sells them all, but the venture proves unsuccessful because he is mugged by three teenagers. As Kim treats his wounds, he blames himself for not recognizing the threat and promises to see a psychologist but instead goes to work the next day as usual. Kim is assigned as pro bono counsel for several defendants. When a problem arises with recent Mesa Verde paperwork, Kim sees her current case through to completion before responding, for which Paige later reprimands her. Mike discreetly escorts foreign structural engineers through the industrial laundry so they can evaluate the space below as a site for Gus's planned meth "superlab." Gus is impressed by one, Werner Ziegler, and offers him the job of planning and overseeing the construction of the facility.

And they planned this all from the beginning. It was such a risk releasing Breaking Bad before Better Call Saul, which is weird from an artistic point of view, a sequel released before anyone had even seen the original is bold storytelling. Bravo Vince.

@@DaGleese he had a smaller version at his home, although that was more a tunnel than a full room but with how much Lalo likes to be sure about stuff I would suspect he knows how the construction of the tunnel, and how it supports itself, works.

I love this scene. Werner is not like the first guy, he is not a seller and is not there to say what you want to hear. He is realistic, authentic and a very experienced professional. A truely expert, something hard to find these days.

@@LIRON50 thank you for your comment. I think it's not just that. For example, he tells Mike that blasting is not necessary, but a guy like Fring already knows this isn't an easy project. He speaks like he can handle it easily, but he is the type of guy who sell you something and then start to make excuses at the first sign of trouble...

It's so tragic the way everyone buys Gus' charm at first. I've had so many bosses like him. When you first meet them, you think you're onto a winner, as they seem like they'll be great to work for. Then before you know it, they slash your throat with a boxcutter just to make a point to your coworkers.

I love that little detail of him returning back to his book when talking about how much concrete they need. Werner makes calculations for all eventualities, and he wants to be as precise as possible when he gives his estimates, so he returns to his calculations instead of winging the numbers. This precision, professionalism, and no BS attitude is why Gus chose him. Sadly Werner is too honest, too innocent to understand the danger that such project entails.

I will never understand why Germans prefer stuff to be dubbed, I am Scandinavian and I hate dubbed stuff 😂 I feel like most agree here. Subtitles are fine & it's not the 20th Century anymore. Most Western Europeans are well versed in English. Dubbing can sometimes be distracting because the lips or the performance doesn't match.

@@LetsGoGetThem You need a whole dubbing industry to make it work, Germany has this because we have a tradition of producing "Hörspiele", which is basically a movie but only for your ears. Thats why our voice actors are superior, they have the possibility to do it fulltime and make a living with just this skill.

Werner was a genuine dude. Brilliant mind late into a successful career. I feel like he took the job because it was a new challenge and that he wanted to believe he was working for the good guys. I think he was looking past the sketchiness and wanted to believe it was a secret government base or something.

Gus spent so much money on a massively complicated project to build an underground Lab below a laundromat, meanwhile Walt spent virtually nothing in comparison with his idea to set up the labs in ordinary houses under the guise fumigating homes. Really puts into perspective on how businessman and a scientist would conduct criminal activities.

Consider Gus had to hide from the Salamancas, Bolsa and Eladio. Walt had not such worries so he could hide in the open.

Stands to reason Walt got away with Vamonos only because at that point anyone who could implicate him was dead, in cahoots, or frying bigger fish in Hank's case as ASAC. It gets glossed over but they more or less quit doing business in Albuquerque once Declan and Lydia take over distribution - at least, they don't do any more business in ABQ than anywhere else in the SW so for anyone's guess they may as well have been cooking on the ISS. With the benefit of no cartel or DEA Gus would have had just as much success in that scenario.

I wonder if this subplot came about due to all the engineers contacting the creators of Breaking Bad expressing how difficult or unrealistic the hidden lab would have been to make. So they sat down, and worked out exactly how it could be done and thought that would make for interesting TV.

TBH it would have been so much easier (and cheaper) to build the hidden lab first at a new location, then build a new laundromat overtop, then vacate/sell the original laundromat. Companies relocate all the time. Until BCS, it never even occurred to me that the laundromat was built first and then a secret basement was excavated underneath after the fact; I doubt it occurred to many engineers watching the show either.

@@milesmcstylez The way it ended up playing out can also be read as a testament to Gus' caution. Seems to me he likely made an assessment that all the hoopla with moving/opening a new place is more fraught with opportunities to follow the money and paperwork, instead of letting people continue to pay no mind to a laundromat which has been there for years. Building the lab second prevents any curious eyes in the zoning department from wondering why a laundromat needs such an extensive substructure.

Gus didn't always play the part of the bad guy, and considering how insane Walter was, it's not unreasonable to think he wasn't. However Werner is one example that definitely makes Gus the bad guy. When he meets his end, sure it's a victory for Walter, but more importantly, it's just good to see "vengeance" for Werner.

Did he? First of Werner knew what he was getting himself into. And if he didn’t he received fair warning after he jeopardized the project the first time. And then he went and did something worse. That’s not the kind of thing that gets you killed in the legitimate world but Werner wasn’t in the legitimate world and he either knew that or should have. His stupidity got him killed more than any cruelty on Gus’s part.

I also feel that Gus likes Werner over the first guy, because Werner seems to feel the effort this job needs. In a way, this inflates Gus' ego, since people need to do a lot of effort to make his ends meet - to build the underground lab. I feel Gus latently could not stand the arrogance of the first guy ... This of course apart from the numerous other reasons to choose Werner over the first guy - as already mentioned in the comments

What made no sense was Gus giving his real name. Any of them could have gone back to Germany and looked him up, he was a prominent businessman in the area and very active in the community. Quite a risk.

You have to take into account that during this episode it's the year 2003. Just looking up everything like nowadays might not have been possible or wouldn't even occur to most people. All three men in this scene are born no later than 1960. Lots of people significantly younger then that have a hard time navigating the internet to this day - just look at most politicians! Looking up Gus Fring on the internet in 2003 might have pointed to his business in New Mexico but not to any specific location in that state. Realistly though I think this level of secracy just didn't matter anymore once Gus was sure he would work with Werner Zieeegler. They were all in this together. Especially considering that Werner and his team were allowed to venture outside to have a drink at one point. Gus ordered Werners death because of his escape. He wouldn't have gone so far if Werner just accidently figured out that they are in New Mexico. Gus couldn't trust Werner anymore and that sealed the latters fate. Another possibility would be that Gus' disregarded any possibility of his dealings with Werner (and eventually Werners crew) to backfire. Threre is a slight chance that some German engineers (who knowingly work for dubious clients thus incriminating themselves) might find out that he has some chicken restaurants in New Mexico. So what? They would have no idea of his criminal enterprise or anything else. Gale knowing who Gus is (to an extent) was a much greater risk, considering Gales careless character. For Gus establishing a good and trusting business relationship by meeting Werner Zieeegler in person might have been worth this minisucle risk.

This was Gus in his early years of being a crime lord. I think the show wanted us to get a sense he was still learning and fitting into the role. You seen him expressing emotion a lot more then he did in Breaking Bad.

It would honestly have been better for Werner had he not met Gus Fringe. Because Werner clearly got fooled by Gus friendly and welcoming appearance. And that is what ended up costing him his life.

In a trip to the USA my younger son made us drive all the way to Albuquerque - from Denver - because he wanted to visit the locations of Breaking Bad. After seeing a lot of billboards all over the road advertising legal services I understood where the "Better Call Saul" idea came from. Although I don't watch any of the two series, it was very cool. I liked the food in the Twisters (Pollos Hermanos).

The show might not show everybody that was tested for the project but they tried another guy, think he was French - scoffed at the idea that blasting was needed, looked the place up and down for 2 seconds before concluding so and then bragged about working on another secret super-project, saying if he could do that this would be easy Werner took the task seriously and more imporantly was connected to the engineering involved in it, and also presented a "grounded in reality" view of what it would look like to achieve Gus knew blasting would be needed so he must have had at the very least a basic outline of what he wanted to build, even if he didn't have every exact measurement. This is Gus we are talking about though so it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out he had researched pretty much everything.
