This song always reminds me of my mama, RIP. I’m 62 now but grew up poor working class (cotton mills) and Mama made all my clothes until I went off to college and even then she still made clothes for my sister and me. She was a talented seamstress but I vividly remember being embarrassed as a young teen that I had to wear homemade clothes while others wore clothes bought from department stores. I’m so grateful that I realized as a young adult all the sacrifices she made for my sister and me and was able to express my gratitude to her. RIP Billie Hunter…you were the best mama ever

This song makes me reflect on the many sacrifices my mom made just to give me a good life. We're a poor to middle class family but my mom managed to provide me with everything I needed, with a few wants every now and then. That's the coat of many colors that she gave me, and I am forever grateful to her. She just passed last month, and here I am listening to this masterpiece with tears rolling down my cheeks. Mom, thank you for everything.

This song reminds me of my first day of preschool. My grandma made me a red and white dress I was proud of that dress and couldn't wait to wear it. I got bullied that first day and came home crying my eyes out. My grandma wiped my tears and asked me "Do you still love your dress?" Of course through sobs and tears I told her "I love more then anything else" and she said "Then why does it matter what those kids think?"

I grew up lower middle class but my grandmother sewed some clothes for me growing up and crocheted beautiful dresses and sweaters. Even though my parents bought me clothes as well, however,, grandma's clothing got the most compliments😃. I also have sweaters that grandma crocheted for me as an adult and I treasure them more now since she passed away😊. Even though I am materially rich (as compared to many of the Third World country's people) the best possessions I own are my faith and grandma's beautiful sweaters. She grew up poor in Poland but was always a giving soul who could have given professional tailors a lesson or two in design😀. May she rest in peace.

Back through the years I go wonderin' once again Back to the seasons of my youth I recall a box of rags that someone gave us And how my momma put the rags to use There were rags of many colors Every piece was small And I didn't have a coat And it was way down in the fall Momma sewed the rags together Sewin' every piece with love She made my coat of many colors That I was so proud of As she sewed, she told a story From the Bible, she had read About a coat of many colors Joseph wore and then she said Perhaps this coat will bring you Good luck and happiness And I just couldn't wait to wear it And momma blessed it with a kiss My coat of many colors That my momma made for me Made only from rags But I wore it so proudly Although we had no money I was rich as I could be In my coat of many colors My momma made for me So with patches on my britches And holes in both my shoes In my coat of many colors I hurried off to school Just to find the others laughing And making fun of me In my coat of many colors My momma made for me And oh, I couldn't understand it For I felt I was rich And I told 'em of the love My momma sewed in every stitch And I told 'em all the story Momma told me while she sewed And how my coat of many colors Was worth more than all their clothes But they didn't understand it And I tried to make them see That one is only poor Only if they choose to be Now I know we had no money But I was rich as I could be In my coat of many colors My momma made for me Made just for me

I'm surprised by the amount of people curious to know if this song is biographical. It most certainly is and to this day Dolly has her beloved little Coat of Many Colours. There is a documentary I've seen in which she holds it up so proudly and lovingly, with a sole remaining button, the others having been pulled off by the taunting children Dolly sings of. Poor? This lady was born into abject poverty! But thanks to a whole lot of love and of course, her being blessed with a heavenly voice and wonderful songwriting abilities, she has become what we see (and hear) today. Dolly is a rare and precious lady gifted also with a beautiful soul.

I hope and pray that your life will get easier and better for you as bringing up two children on your own must be so hard ... I hope you children will come to appreciate real country music ... the words are a real lesson in life that Dolly lived through ... just look at her now she deserves all the fame as she has put in the hard work over many years and Dolly is so modest.

Dixie Woods This song brings back all my memories of my Grandma as she sewed our patch work blankets I would sit with her and she taught me all the colours as she sewed. I am 62 now but still have one of her blankets she made. My beautiful grandmother did everything for her grandchildren without her I don't know we're my 2 brothers and I would have ended up my dad was an alcoholic and my mother only cared about herself it's sad to look back at the humble life we had but we all made it through thanks to Grandmas loving hands

I didnt expect to break down crying today ; After all...I have heard this song many times. But Today I am thinking about my own coat of many colors. My mom was physically strong, she had a brilliant mind, she was creative, she was caring, fiercely intelligent, proud and ethical "Can Do!" person who would not back down -- not ever. She also had serious mental health problems, and she lived a very very hard life (with some special joys and insights too). I am crying in appreciation for my "Coat of Colors" which is to say, my every gesture of my hands, every thought I have, every action I take: all were molded and shaped by the spirit of my mom. Even my flaws (which I am finally growing to appreciate and forgive) came from this Coat of Many Colors. Today I give a special thanks to Dolly for writing this song.

Dolly is country. Her music is based on her life being raised in the hills of Tennessee with none of the luxuries of today. If only the young people of today could hear this song and realize how blessed they are and how little they have to complain about. My Mom was raised in Southwestern Virginia over 80 years ago and she can very much relate to his song. Keep writing songs Dolly. You are truly country and I will always love you for who you are. A sweet and down to earth person.

@Dolly Parton Yes. With out a doubt. Thank you for responding. Not to many country music stars would send such a kind response. I remember a part you played on Designing Women back in the day and you were Charlene's favorite hick. You played an angel. Perfect casting. Will always love you and your music. Keep singing. Very sad about the Great Loretta Lynn' s passing. She will be missed by us old timers who listened to her back in the day as well as Miss Kitty Wells. Kind regards Tom

I was lucky enough to be at this concert at the Dominion Theatre in London, Dolly held the audience in the palm of her hand that night, I recall her saying to the audience, make them cry, make them laugh but send them home happy and she did just that. Thanks you dolly, been so many years since I have seen her in concert but the memory never leaves you.

Guys? Once, - eleven months ago, I happend to come in to a radio program here i Norway, seconds to late to hear this song. I simply made up my mind to find it here on youtube, Only to listen to it one time. I did so. But the song made me listen to it over and over and over again, it made ME to go back to MY youth. And in the end; made me return to my hometown to stay there on my own for the first time in 43 years. Since then I`ve returned two times, planning to go back home as soon as possible. THIS song made me homesick! Thanks, Dolly,

Dolly is one special person to me ... I am going to be 41 yrs old this year in October .. I have seen Dolly at two different concerts. In the last 10 years .. The is one way that I had started listening to her since I was a youngester.. I would go to my gram's house and she would always be playing an 8-track by Dolly Parton and Port Wagner . And I would sit in a rocking chair and always listen to 2 of the 8 tracks and I would know that all her music ment so much to me .. Well during the years of my life I must have over 20-30 cds of Dolly ... I really love her music and she is my favorite .... I have been to Dollywood as well ..I plan to go back there and hope some day to be able to see her in person again .. She is very gal I think can sing very great ... There are a lot of guys my age that dont like country music but each one of her songs have so much meaning to them .. At a woman 70 years old she still can perform very nice .. I cant wait to see her again .. She like to tease when she is up on that stage but she does a great job ... I hope she is singing till she is 80 or even after that ... I really like her a lot I could listen to her anytime of the day or night ..
