As a toddler Gustavus’ daughter Kristina took after him and he was very proud of her. He loved her the minute she was born and he didn’t care that she wasn’t a boy. Even as a one year old the sound of cannon fire made Kristina laugh instead of cry, and Gustavus was so proud of that that he took her with him when reviewing the troops. The last time they saw each other was when Kristina was three, she was annoyed that Gustavus wasn’t paying attention to her at the moment, but when he saw her he gave her a big hug and cried because it was like he knew he’d never see her again. And then after he left Kristina cried so hard for three days that she almost went blind from it, and she almost never cried even at that age. She wrote two letters to him all by herself in German asking him to come home soon and bring her something pretty.

Most interesting and edifying, thanks for the upload. Adolphus was mentioned in something I read about the use of the pike and the evolution of tactics. Many European armies began using variations on his tactics. He was a long way ahead of his time in a variety of ways. The cross training that allowed cavalry troops to capture and use guns immediately and allowed artillery troops to be very mobile. the same with cross training pike men and musketeers, greatly increasing the ability to respond to changing conditions. I was familiar with the name but not aware of the many things he did. His intelligence made the Swedish military stronger, more capable than much larger armies .

People often forget that Gustavus was so successful because he was supported by one of the true giants of his time, Axel Oxenstierna. Cardinal Richelieu was said to have greatly admired Oxenstierna. He was the ice that balanced Gustavus fire.

My father is a distant, very distant, relative to Gustavus Adolphus. The story is that Gustavus Adolphus was killed in battle because he had a horse that he didn't ride very often, Streif I think he was named, he also had bad eyesight and was obese. Streif got spooked by a cannonade and took of into the fog with Gustavus Adolphus wobbling around in the saddle. When Gustavus Adolphus got control of the horse he couldn't see were he was because a King does not wear eyeglasses in public, popstrous notion these seeing eye glasses... Streif got spooked a second time and threw Gustavus Adolphus to the ground. He was soon surrounded by Croatian mercenaries, the Krabats, they were light cavalry and encircled the King shouting "Who are you?" and Gustavus Adolphus replied "I am the King of Sweden!". So one Krabat tried to pull him up on his horse for this was a great price indeed, but the King being so obese he couldn't get him up on the horse, not without dismounting. But dismounting during battle was something a Krabat only did if he won or died, so they shot Gustavus Adolphus dead, and as the great King of Sweden died in the mud they rode off in into the thick fog.... Thus ended the life of the only Swedish king with the title "Great"... This is the story that was told to me by my Paternal Grandmother who didn't like my mother very much since she is Croatian. Fate plays such tricks on humanity it's not even funny....

Lion from the North conducted a war on Poland in A.D. 1626 before his invovement in Thirty Years War. Sweds were deafteted in Pomerania by great Polish hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski (also famous for his victories over Tatars and Turks) in the battles of Czarne (1627) and Trzciana (1629). In the second one Winged Hussars destroyed Gustav's cavalry in what he regarded as his worst defeat. At inconclusive battle of Tczew (1627) he get wound that would stop him from wearing armor. His fleet was also deafeted at battle of Oliwa (1627). The war secured Polish control over that region and all of Poland from Sweds until the Deluge. 🇵🇱 🇸🇪
