On our 8 day trip from Minnesota to Quartzsite, at 5:30am one morning as we left a gas station a guy emerged from the shadows and tried to stop us from pulling out. I didn't stop...

Yeah, and maybe he could have become your best friend in Wichita if you hadn't driven off. NOT. While upon close examination it appears to be a phone rather than gun in his hand, just the fact of how protective he was of it, not swinging that arm as he walked, while swinging the other arm in a big way to make up for that, was a red flag to me. It meant he was in a hurry to head you off at the pass, and I don't find that acceptable. You did the right thing to keep moving. Secret Service would have floored it in reverse, spun 180 degrees, and floored it again, though maybe not in a vehicle as tipsy as the ambo.

You did well David. The only thing I do different is I get rolling with the doors locked and THEN put my seatbelt on after I'm clear of the immediate area. While rolling slowly away, I want the flexibility of not being belted in as it allows quicker access to a specific device inside my waistband.

Hi David and Lefty. In spite of the inhumanity of not finding out if he needed help, this is what the world has turned us into. You can no longer be kind and stop because the alternative is too costly potentially. No matter what, yours and Lefty's safety should always come first. You did the right thing. It's not like you left him there for dead. He has other ways to get help if that is truly what he intended. The other option, that he was a fan and wanted to connect, then he should comment on your video and give you the opportunity to apologize and beg for his understanding. The apology is not for your behavior but for society's. Glad it all turned out ok. Stay alert. Be safe and well my friend.

No one in their right mind walks up to someone in the dark like that expecting a warm welcome. That's a real quick way to get yourself shot in some cases/many places. I don't know who you are, it's dark, and I don't know what you're up to and if you might have an accomplice. No sir. I'm gonna make it out of there alive. Even if it was someone who might have recognized you, why would you approach someone like that! You trust your gut and GTFO of that situation like you did always. That could have been nothin, but it also could've been really bad.

The first thing I noticed when he was walking up to you was he had something shining, chrome like, in his hand. If he was a fan, he would've approached at almost a trot. And....his wave to hail you would've been a high five kinda wave.! I'm 6'6" and am sturdy at 300 lbs. I would've been very nervous and kept my eyes on his other hand. Also continuing to scan the mirrors and the place that he came from. That's 4 places to look, but you can do it if you're vigilant. Could have been one of many things he wanted but in today's world it's best to keep on truckin down the road. This strange guy out of nowhere is not bleeding out so leave him be. If he was looking for gas money he should have been in a more populated area. He came from the dark so that should tell you right there that he was probably up to no good. In this day and age, we have to be especially careful. As Faith Renewed said, he always could have gone to the people inside the station if he needed help. It's a known fact that many crimes occur in the pre-dawn hours. If you're out and about then, you have to be even more careful.

It could have been a few things. I would have done the same thing you did. He could have had a weapon. He could have just wanted a ride or some help. Too dark and too isolated to figure it out.

If the guy is a fan, he'll see this and contact you. I have seen/heard of people taking advantage of others at these stops. They pretend one thing, like needing a ride, wondering where you're headed, and then it doesn't end well. They know you have a lot of interesting things inside the homes of travelers. It's not the same world anymore and while maybe you could keep your doors locked and have the window down only an inch, keep it in drive and ready to go if the person doesn't respond correctly. If it was a fan, why did they use the stop signal instead of an enthusiastic wave? A big smile? That kind of thing? Trust your gut. They say it contains a second brain of sorts

He came from near a white truck behind the gas station.his hand initially was in his right pocket to keep the gun from swinging in his shorts..THEN around 7:43 he stealthily grabbed the gun in his hand. Notice how his right hand always was at his side? Plus with the zoom i have for youtube, you can see a chrome reflection of the 22 auto.

I was thinking the same thing, but then I switched to 1080p, magnified it, and slowed it down. Then you can see, especially around the time he goes off the left side of the screen, how it looks much more like his hand is wrapped around a phone (with his thumb and forefinger WAY apart making a big C shape) than his hand is holding a gun (which would have thumb and forefinger much closer, and not at all like a large open C shape). But in any case, a guy with a shiny object in his hand, after swinging only the other arm while walking, and I'm "outta there".

I've learned never deviate from what you intend to do. You were going to go left to that other gas station but for some reason you decide to go right and with the grace of God nothing happened. I use that philosophy if I accidentally get into a left turn lane oh I need to go straight I never get out of that Lane and go straight I always make the left and come back around

I’m so glad you showed this video and this incident! Because I am a solo female, and I don’t think I would have thought much of driving up to a gas station where there were no other people around. But from now on, I am never going to stop at any gas station, day or night, when there are no other people around. It just seems like I might be stepping into some kind of trouble. I just never thought about it that way until you showed this video. So I REALLY thank you a lot! That guy came out of the dark, out of nowhere, and he had some kind of criminal intentions! I believe He was going to do something to stall you, and then other people from where he came from, were going to come out and jump you. I know this sounds terrible, but with the drug crisis going on now in our country, you have no idea what these people are willing to do to get drugs or get money for drugs. I’m so glad you basically just raced out of there and didn’t look back. I feel Your intuition saved both you and Lefty, thank goodness!!

Go with your gut feeling, you did the right thing. We all know we can't trust people like we use to, he was a stranger to you. You didn't owe him anything, he could of tried to take advantage of you wouldn't be the first time it happened. He walked up there so brazenly thinking you would fall for it. I commend you for being sensible about the situation driving on. You didn't get good vibes in the beginning, you made the comment that it was a big place no one else around. We are always warned to go with our gut instincts it will keep us out of trouble. You owed him nothing !!!. Thanks for sharing.

When you were waiting to turn right off the highway to go left into the gas station, I saw a truck pull in and go around behind the building. I watched you pull to the pump you used and saw the other pumps behind the building and a truck stopped there getting gas. If he truly needed help, he would've gone over there. Also, you were at the poorly lit pumps. Maybe he thought he'd reach you before you got back into your vehicle. I agree with all the other commenters...you did the right thing. Always best to listen to our "spidey sense"! 👍

A couple of possibilities, both good for you: 1) He was a menace and you were right to avoid and not engage him. You possibly saved yourself from some harm, or 2) He was a fan of yours or just an innocent guy down on his luck and you kindly schooled him on how and when not to approach someone if he wants a favorable reaction.

I am shocked by Lefty not being up and barking!!! My dog who is so laid back and old is always up and and not growling and mean but barking, alerting and loud! Get the bad man Lefty! Given what ya had, the time of morning, and that if he needed help it was inside, you were wise to keep moving. Did you notice the no service bag covers on the other pumps? When anything like that is a red flag. There has been stories of gas being put in diesel holding tanks at stations. Me ? I would have gone to the other station at the onset. Been solo for 4 years out there too. You were so close to being a victim. I walk around my whole vehicle before pumping in a real purposeful manner with my tire bat looing in all directs and wacking my tires hard to intimidate anyone lerking around. The bat is a 18 inch long metal flashlight with a wrist band attached so it can't be taken off me. It also has a strobe light and alarm. I love it. 😊 I do the same routine at Wally World and such too.
