Ride the King Alfred's Way, Time Travel Gravel bike route with Guy Kesteven - writer of the official Cycling UK guidebook - as your expert narrator and animator. Part 2 runs from Uffington White Horse to Farnham through 10,000 years of English history as part of a 3 day. recce ride ahead of the launch of this the fantastically varied and stunningly beautiful 350km route.

Ahhh chalk downland, the holy trinity - chalk, clay and flint.......dry chalk ok, wet chalk slippy, green chalk deadly, dry clay fast, wet clay the original superglue, large flints gnarly small flints tyre shredders!! Nice ride and route - interesting history too, thanks

Thanks for these 2 videos you’ve posted. Avebury and The Ridgeway are my neck of the woods. And learn’t some history I never knew.

Can't believe you were up on Caesar's Camp, within a few miles of my house. If you had turned right on the canal, you would have come across a lot more pill boxes and anti tank blocks. And Odiham Castle ruins. Waverley Abbey ruins are worth a visit too.

These videos give a great overview of the route and terrain - thank you!. We're hoping to do it this summer - We both have hardtail MTB with chunky tyres (mine are 29x2.2 Maxxis). Was thinking some different tyres might work better - would you suggest going for something like a 700x35c hybrid tyre, sticking with what I've got or something in the middle?

Did you wild camp? I’m bikepacking in two weeks , and wanted to camp around wantage. Will ride until dusk.

interested in this too, starting from Reading on Mon 24th May 2021, will be camping too. Route from Reading to Farnham is reported as being quite urban, and not good for camping - guess we'll find out!

Hi..you didn't show the Uffington White Horse..is it actually visible from the Ridgeway?

It’s just to the north of the Ridgeway abs like a chimp I rode past before I realised. Otherwise you can drop down the front of the hill slightly to get a good view.

I use a Wahoo Roam but Garmin is the fancier option or there’s lots of smart phone apps if you don’t mind putting your phone on the bars

There’s a full kit run through video on the channel if you want all the details but I was testing the new Zipp 40mm gravel tyres. Started at 30/35 but dropped them to 28 both ends and they were fine. New Zipp Firecrest are super wide though.

How often are you affected by traffic?

90% of the route is on very quiet lanes or off road tracks. It’s only the towns where you might run into busier traffic but even then we’ve always avoided using main roads and will cross them with bridges or underpass wherever possible

As an archeologist I would have thought you would have had more respect for the Weyland Smithy site than to tear round it on your bikes! I can just see people copying you, seeing as you wrote the guide book!

I agree. Also the inappropriate speed on the canal towpaths. Someone or something is going to get hurt badly by using them as race tracks.

Hi. I'm a full time narrow boat live aboard and keen cyclist. Like your videos but have to say that the speed at which you're travelling at on the canal footpaths is not a good look. There is no way that you'd be able to slow/stop effectivley if you met a walker or stray dog, especially on some of the narrower stretches where visibility is low. I love cycling but you're promoting an inappropriate use of the towpaths.

Sorry Paul, I agree that it looks fast on camera. However to offer some context because I was right up against the publishing deadline for the guide book. Therefore we shot this midweek on the first week that the first lockdown lifted and we hardly saw anyone else the entire trip. Apologies for creating a bad impression for (thankfully) more normal times. Guy
