GWEN VERDON Backstage at "Charity"

An informal interview with Gwen Verdon, backstage at the Minskoff Theatre during the run of the Tony-winning 1986 Broadway revival of "Sweet Charity," a revival that reproduced the original Bob Fosse staging and choreography. Verdon had a great deal to do with the direction and choreography of the '86 "Charity," a show that she had inspired and created twenty years earlier.

I had a wonderful, year long friendship with Gwen in the late 1980s before I moved to LA from NYC. She was fun, humble, smart and generous. And, most appealingly, possessed a child like wonder and learning new things: she hired me to teach her how to “Vogue” dance! I still miss this grande dame! ❤️

am near 70 now. When I was a very young kid, was a latch key kid and the local tv station would show a movie and repeat it for a week and then two showing on Saturdays. I watched Damn Yankee's every single day and fell in love with Verdon and with musical theatre, not even knowing what it was. Watching the tv production Fosse/Verdon despite issues with it, is nice to see her remembered.

Interesting points about how modern critics (in 1986 or now) often "criticize" a show instead of "critiquing" it.

Little did they know that in another ten years Chicago would finally return and have this wonderful afterlife. This video is so precious, I can’t believe I’m hearing that iconic glorious voice that’s etched on my mind from those cast albums. She seems so fragile here, it’s so touching. Thanks!

Gwen Verdon was 63 years old here (I am 63) and we think childlike but we...simply are not. Gwen went on to do The Cotton Club, Cocoon...she was a marvellous star. "Charity" did it for me, too. The OBC album was my best pal after school when I was a kid. Thank you! 💘

God, I wish there was footage of Gwen dancing Roxie's Strut. I've seen Ann Reinking and Chita Rivera kill it, but it's sad to not see the original.

Thank you once again for sharing your collection with us. Do you happen to have any early footage of Lenora Nemetz? I saw her do a Fosse revue in a small town outside of Pittsburgh in January of this year, and she spoke very warmly and fondly about her time working with Bob and Gwen. I've tracked down some of the more commonly circulating videos of her performances, but if anyone has anything 'extra special,' it would be you. ;-)

I never take postings from other people's pages. And I always try to check before I post that the video has not been previously posted on KZfaq. When I searched for "Gwen Verdon interview" on KZfaq, this did not come up. And I have had this since the '80s, on a VHS tape that also includes the Debbie Allen backstage footage and most of the musical numbers from the production. When did you post this?

@@auroraspiderwoman5886 hmmmm well I wonder if I took it down. Anyway, I do have it all. I extracted it from a dvd that I had put it on and tried to enhance it a bit. Those were the days...not crazy about Debbie but Gwen is a goddess. What a mess today.
