When you're busy lifting and then there's someone who just came out of nowhere correcting how you should do the lifting in a very intimidating way. This, for me, is a BIG No No although i appreciate the concern. And do this if you are a certified personal trainer. Leave other people's business if you are no help.

Yea, you missed the most important one - Stop worrying about other people and hit the gym, get in get out. Done. Enough. Do that 5 or 6 times a week for an hour or max two hours.

More so a couple bonus ones. If you forgot your headphones don’t play your music through your phone speakers lol. Unsolicited advice, this happens a lot with trainers, they don’t bother to ask if I have an injury or limited mobility. Don’t ego lift, doesn’t hurt anyone except yourself, but in some cases they grab every plate in the gym so they can move the leg press up and down a couple inches.

I‘m from Germany and on the first day when I went to the gym, I had to tell a personal trainer my fitness goals. If I wanna lose weight or gain muscle for example and then he would make a plan for me. He would show me every excersice on every machine so I wouldn’t hurt myself. I think that was really cool, because I felt a lot more confident and I knew what I was doing :)

I remember I was about to use this one equipment and I was asking the girls around, "Is this yours?" And they would just say no. They had their gym bag on top. Finally I went to the gym employee and told him someone just left their gym bag there and I was afraid to move it and cause a confrontation. He came with me and as he was about to move it, one of the girls I had previously asked, said, "Don't move it, she is doing the...". I forgot what word she used. In short, she had saved spots, because she was going to use this equipment, that equipment, etc. The hell. That's not your private gym. Move over witches!!!

I stare cause I’m new and I’m trying to figure out how people use the machines. 🤦🏾‍♀️ People, I wrote that after my second trip to the gym. I was watching this video (For beginners) to learn how to conduct myself because I had no clue. I would try to discreetly watch what a person was doing. I didn’t even know the name of the machines to type into KZfaq to see how to use the them. Asking for help isn’t easy for everyone. You already feel like you stick out like a sore thumb as a beginner and that the whole gym will see you’re every mistake. Obviously now I know and I’m a lot more confident.

Don't drop your weights on the floor after a set like you just set a new world record in power lifting. Control yourself and control the weights on the way down. Edit: I'll rephrase myself. I did say "after a set". I do understand if you just maxed out and hit your limit and couldn't hold it. We've all been there. What I meant was in reference to those who do it after every single set. We get it....you're a big guy lifting big weights. It's a gym. We're all picking up large heavy objects and putting them back down again.

A little iffy on this one. If I see someone deadlifting with a nasty rounded back I feel like you should let them know about the form. If they look like beginners is what I’m saying. Also being super kind and nice about it and apologizing for interrupting their workout! I’d rather not have someone absolutely blow their back out or injure themselves than be worried about if they want the advice or not. If someone's correcting an unsafe technique, it's not just good, but necessary to be corrected. But if someone comes up and starts rambling on about how you need to do this many reps, or eat that many calories, without a clue of what you're even trying to achieve? Yeah, I'm firmly in favour of this one in those situations. Otherwise, be polite about it and wait for a suitable time to step in. Distracting someone who's lifting can be just as likely to get someone hurt, after all.

This new guy starts, that day she got in a larger pickup truck to take it outside, and not even kidding this new guy came over and told her and quote, 'no way can you handle driving this truck, let me take it out for you'.... OMG she let loose on him like no other and this guy backed away real quick than even reprimanded by a service writer that's also marine, the assistant manager and a few body techs... The added inclusion of not spraying down the equipment after use, while occupying 3 separate areas, standing 0.420mm away from the weight rack by the mirror, grunting loudly every rep, with 3 sets of dumbells, an EZ bar, a bench while leaving his coat on the lat pulldowns on the other side of the gym. He was also staring directly at me angrily, creeping on a woman quite openly, while stinking up the place in his yellow-stained stringer. He then left all the weights he was using on the floor & left. Like, the only way he could've made it worse is by taking a steaming dump in the middle of the floor...

@theself-carehabit4121 2 жыл бұрын
The smith machine is very versatile but is absolutely terrible for squats. You shouldn't be doing squats on a smith machine. There are tons of other exercises that a smith machine is great for. Smith machine squats don't allow for stabilizer muscle activation because the bar is on a set track in only 1 plane of motion. Over time, the lack of hamstring (and other stabilizer muscle) activation weakens knee stability and can lead to a knee injury in other exercises. Especially if you start to do free weight squats. You would need to relearn form and basically start from scratch. You can research this on your own. Don't take my word for it.

I'd probably say to try not to presume bad conduct or bad motives on someone else's part wherever possible. It's not really good for your mental well-being and you may be mistaken anyway. It may not be a "macho" thing. Perhaps the person in question is bored with solo exercises and is imagining a competition that you are not privy to. He may have picked out someone who looks like they're really pushing it to push himself. I myself find the treadmill boring-necessary sometimes, but boring-so I can sympathise somewhat if he is looking for motivation. But I'm a fairly slow running woman, so I don't ever find myself trying to top anyone. Or find anyone attempting to replicate my graceless "running" and slow pace. :D The only reason that I would attribute a bad motive to a fellow gym-goer is when they stop exactly when I do, regardless of how long they've been using the treadmill or machine and approach me. That's usually the precursor to propositions or requests for dates. Dude, no. I'll let you know if I'm interested. This isn't the club.

The rerack is my biggest pet peeve. I worked in a gym so we would have to do it. There were a times guys would leave their 125 pound dumbbells across the gym. Like dude I can carry 50 across the gym but I’m struggling. It’s always guys. Rarely ever girls are the ones to leave dumbbells. At the location that I was the general manager at was luckily so good at reracking corporate was impressed 😅 the location I started at was horrible 😅

Sometimes I struggle not blocking someone’s mirror view. The way my gym is set up the rack/free weights are right in front of the biceps curl/tricep dip with free plates and there’s seriously no way I can’t block them. I feel so bad! And I use a smith machine for chest press Bc I go alone and I don’t have a spotter

Honestly makes me feel much better about being a new gym goer, I know that obviously everyone has personal space needs, anxiety or not, humans just need that, but I mean, it makes me feel better that even light hovering makes even more confident people get irked. I just worry sometimes that with lower self confidence and anxiety, I would be one of the few people weirded out by someone working out next to me when theres plenty of space farther away, but I guess its a lot of you! Also knowing that there's so much common sense in using the space properly and respectfully, at least I have that under my belt from the get-go. And it also makes me feel better that I'm not going to some city gym with a huge influx of people, so while it might still get busy in a small gym, I don't forsee mine to get too crazy hahaha

it’s really hard to judge whether people want help/advice or not, coming from someone who gets very socially anxious, but if you’re super nice about it and make sure you’re not saying it in a judgy/know it all way and more in a ‘you could injure yourself!’ way then it should be okay, not an expert but i would definitely be the person struggling!😅

So for eg if im doing 4x12 on the leg press machine do I do the 12 reps, rest on the machine and carry on doing that until I complete the 4 sets. Or do I do the 1 set of 12 and move on to my next exercise that I have planned eg leg extension do and the 1 set of 12 then go back to the leg press and so on ? (Idk if you get me 😅🙈) could you help me? (Or anyone else)

Idk if it only happened to me but I've had guys suggesting doing an exercise instead of the one I was doing at the time "because that way it was more effective" ( like don't use a barbell, use 2 dumbbells or add a pulse in between reps) like no my pt is the one choosing my exercise for certain reasons, I don't need someone interrupting me saying that what I was doing is pointless because they would do that in another way (and I'm not talking about form)

I was peeved today at the gym; this girl who is a regular and notorious for more talking than working out (she’s at the gym for 45 mins and spends about 20 or more running her mouth with different people), so she got on a machine I really needed to use and just stood around chatting for like 10 minutes while I moved around other machines. I noticed that she watches what I do a lot and replicates the workouts which is fine and I am glad to inspire someone though a newbie myself but I wish she was more cognizant of her not so nice etiquette.

Question: if I'm using only, let's say, 10lb dumbbells for my whole 30min workout, is it rude to hog something like that for 30min? I do try to mix up my exercises to where I need to use different weights, so I'm not hogging a set for too long, but just wondering! Haha.
@BrittanyLupton
@BrittanyLupton 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think so! If you’re actively using that equipment for your circuit that’s not rude. even if it’s for a while. ☺️💓 bigger gyms should have more than one set of 10’s anyways. 💓

One time I went to the leg press machine and there was a phone next to it on the floor so I thought to myself who was the last person I saw on it, so I walked it over to him and now I’m thinking did he leave it there on the floor on purpose to save the machine?? But there were no weights on it... I think lol plus he was no where near it and just thought he left it behind on accident 🤔🤔

Ok, I should have come here BEFORE my first gym session in years - I was accidentally guilty of that first one, standing too close to the dumb racks, but I was mindful to put them back after using them rather just dumping them and I certainly didn't hog anything. I did wipe down the machines after using them, both seats and handles (I clean for a living, which helped); I did pluck up the courage to ask for help when I couldn't find the right machine I was looking for (that happened several times), but I lost confidence towards the very end of my workout and didn't complete my last set of flutter kicks. :( Overall though, I'm glad that I went and felt invigorated. ^_^

So hey, I've watched this yesterday to get prepared for today as it's been since 2005 since last gym visit... (Yet not exactly an official gym like la fitness or planet fitness this was at a Christian internship in Texas and the other was in high school) This helped but still little confused about something and hope somebody could help So let's say I see a machine, confused about the instructions than see someone hop on it... Would it be okay if generally just glance over little bit to see how they use it than continue with what I'm doing. Otherwise it was a really cool first time today and even though there was at least 6 other people there, it went surprisingly well but omg hope I don't come across a machine hog

He used to cut through the family locker room & doesn't have kids! That gym let people have terrible etiquette
