Team Honda HRC Motocross and Supercross Manager Lars Lindstrom explains the challenging end to Chase Sexton's time at Honda.
//
Lars Lindstrom just had the perfect season as a team manager in Supercross and Motocross for HRC - with a 22-0 perfect season from Jett Lawrence to boot. Lars started at the team in 2004 building bikes for Ricky Carmichael and has worked his way up to the top spot and if 2023 is anything to go buy he is going to be around for years to come.
Before we get into this episode though, I wanted to share with you some awesome news regarding our first ever race, the Gypsy Tales 500.
Vurbmoto and Gypsy Tales are putting on an 8hr Grand Prix style event in Mesquite, NV. Using one of Gypsy’s favorite events, Australia’s Transmoto series, as inspiration, this will be an 8hr team or solo (for the Savages) race with your boys (or girls). The course will consist of a tamed down moto track and off-road loop, averaging 20 min lap times. The goal? Have fun, kick some beers and race your buddies. It’s worth noting this is a 125cc and Up race, no mini bikes allowed.
As far as the course goes, it will be part moto, part off-road - Sunday’s loop will be a unique course with an average lap time of 20 minutes. The loop will include terrain for the average rider along with a tamed down motocross track with no mandatory jumps. Again, this is a vibe race and will be built for all rider disciplines.

Refreshing to hear people speak openly about the nuances within the back end of the sport, bring some honest insight to the sometimes inevitable awkward scenarios and still be humble about the whole thing. Some people seem quick to burn bridges when interest’s don’t perfectly align but that’s obviously not the case here. Well played gents.

And Chase has not once bad mouthed his old team or bike, even though the media has softballl lobbed questions to get him to bad mouth HRC or the bike.

What I see is that it's difficult to deal with the riders then you have the dads hovering over the whole operation. And the team has to deal with a dad going against the team if the dad doesn't like the way the team wants to do. I guess from what I've heard that Chase and his dad are hard to deal with. And I guess that Ty Masterpools dad is hard to work with. That is why factory teams will not touch him.

Trading teams in mainstream sports or changing teams in moto must be so awkward. Probably not terrible for the team owners and management but probably more so for the athlete. You don’t want to burn a bridge with a company that has worked hard for you and paid you a lot of money but then you also don’t want to settle. Then you have to ride another season with that looming and everyone knows about it. Pretty interesting and really does speak volumes to both Chase and Honda.

I believe everything Lars is saying, but I do believe the Honda was the problem at least for Chase. Chase's riding style was not meant for the Honda. Nothing against the bike and nothing against Chase, they just didn't fit each other. Watching Chase throw away the SMX Title with his crash at LA was easily one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever seen in the sport. He should have won that title by a mile.

Yes and no. Chase came into the SMX Playoffs with the red plate. Chase won SMX Round 1 and got third at SMX Round 2. So if he had won the SMX Round 3, even if Jett got second. You can't not crown a guy who came in with the red plate and proceeded to win 2/3 rounds. There was talk about Jett having to place 3rd in order for Chase to win but that was BS. Had Chase won, he would been 1-3-1 in SMX's. Explain how Jett could've won that with a 4-1-2 lol. Jett ended up going 4-1-1 in SMX for the title win.@@Upthebroncos310

Chase is a very good rider but he just doesn't have the mental fortitude to be a champ and consistently win races. If you've ever raced anything, chasing the leader is the easy part but being in the lead is a challenge in itself and it takes a lot of mental strength not to mess up but whenever I saw Chase in the lead, he'd always mess up and lose the lead and the race. The only reason he won the Supercross title last year was because Eli Tomac blew out his Achilles heel.

What about the behind-the-scenes of when HRC put Chase on concussion protocol without going to a doctor at all at PALA (where HE SAID THEY FOUND OUT HE WAS LEAVING)at the beginning of the season which resulted in chase not winning the title…. If you do the math, Chase and Tomac would have been tied at the final round (not saying he 100% would have beat ET) but the possibilities, Or what about if you paid attention to the pit it was always the Lawrence brother show (and he says there’s no favoritism) wake up yall, when people point out specific points to JUSTIFY, they are always aware of the outcome of the opposite they are opposing. and then Chase was over in the corner by himself…. Hrc knew what they were losing waaaaay before it happened. And they are very quietly changing these riders results.
