Haiden Deegan had one of the most incredible rookie seasons in memory, culminating in the inaugural SMX Playoff Champion just a few weeks again at the iconic LA Coliseum. We managed to organize a quick sit down with Haiden and Brian Deegan in the aftermath of the historic win in the original Mulisha Compound in Temecula's wine country.
Do you think Haiden Deegan gets a bad wrap from the moto media? 👇

I disagree, they’re complaining about why they’re not getting recognized because they’re qualifying themselves as characters, the characters are for people to like, or just like based on their own opinion of these guys opinion of themselves is too high

I agree with the message. But, I have a hard time accepting the source. AP7 is my guy and I love his interviews and when head on the podium. The Deegans are a brand, the Kardashians of MX and and Supercross. Moto needs to be unique among the motorsports brands. Let the riders show their true selves. Variety is the spice of life.

Yes but the real mission is to grow the sport. Who do you think brings more eyes to the sport, Deegan or Ples? I'm with you on Plessenger he's one of my favorites. But believe me when I say this sport is always in danger of going away! I live rite down the road from Washougal track and neighbors are always trying to get it shut down due to noise or traffic for one weekend a year. I'm sure other tracks have same problem, then you got the tree huggers who say it's too dangerous and pollutes the air! The fact is Deegans antics bring thousands of new eyes and support to the sport and make it that much harder to sweep under the rug!

I respect the talent in the family,but don’t agree with the way they market being a punk and jerk to sell themselves… Does it make them rich? I guess but at the cost of making our sport into pro wrestling of this era… No a fan…. I believe (I might be wrong) that the majority of fans don’t care to see a kid put on a act on the podium for entertainment ,but watch the sport because they like dirt bikes and racing…

Sadly most people of any age don't care about character which is why the most exalted people in society are dirtballs. Sponsors care about popularity from a couple of angles but most people only think about one of them. The obvious one is the sheer number of fans that a personality has and the more overlooked one is the number of people who can't stand that same personality. Most sponsors don't want a polarizing figure. Having a million hardcore supporters isn't worth as much if the same person also has 2 million hardcore detractors. The best case for sponsors is to find someone who's very popular but also doesn't spark much animosity among non-fans. Travis Pastrana is a good example since very few dislike him even if they aren't big fans.

Both Deegans ‘personalities’ are completely manufactured and most people can see straight through it. Sure there will be plenty of people that love it but honestly it just comes over as forced and embarrassing to me (and clearly many others). This all came out with the ‘beef’ with Pastrana… who was actually the only one being himself! The kid can ride though, so most true fans should at least give him the respect he deserves for that but the OTT shtick is so transparent… that’s why the moto media don’t care for it.

It shouldn't be up to the moto media to decide for the fans of the sport whether a rider is mundane, robotic and giving canned answers to every podium interview or if their personality is good, bad, too big, fabricated or genuine. Really,..think about how absurd this notion sounds.
@Mockle07
@Mockle07 5 ай бұрын
@@stricknine8623 It’s not “up to them”, they simply have opinions about riders’ actions just like you and I do. The “moto media” is not one central thing either, plenty of the moto outlets are pro Deegan. This is just Brian being Brian; “We’re so edgy and raw, the mainstream can’t handle us man, they just want to keep us in a box but we won’t be caged 🤘🏻” etc. 🙄 Yeah alright mate.
@stricknine8623

@@Mockle07 I wrote,..."it shouldn't be up to the moto media" This means I think that people that are in a position to be stewards of the sport should keep their mouths shut about whether they think that a person's candor or personality is sincere or not. It's another one of those opinion things that I'm exercising here. That sort of middle-school drivel and guessing games should be left up to the fans. If you don't understand that the media (and fans) are either complaining about a robotic, mundane personality with canned answers to interview questions or complaining about a rider not having enough decorum or professionalism,...then you are not being honest or you just don't pay attention. Its not a matter of opinion its an objective reality.

It's not about the Small KZfaqrs trying to build there channels, it's more about the Ama/Feld letting the small channels in that don't know what they're doing and are only subtracting from the quality of Moto Media... it'd be like me letting you into the machine shop with no clue what you're doing. These small channels he's referring to should build their base in the local and regional ranks before being allowed in the big leagues. They're letting anyone in regardless of their competence. To be fair, some media that's been around for along time should be cut as well (matthes)

I see alot of jealously and one sided people. Its crazy how fast people turn against Deegan. Hero to a zero fan base I could live without. Been there done it. I think alot true colors are finally coming out from a few fans and I'm glad to see with Deegan being young. I hope he wins another and another. He will be a champion if he continues the hunger,huge heart etc.Go Deegan.

When there is no news bring up/mention an old interview of the Deegans for views..... did you guys know that Deegan is 4th in points and Vialle is leading the points? No... no you didn't because all anyone in the "moto media" talks about is the guy in 4th place....4th-f'ing-place... The way the "moto media" talks about Deegan you'd think he is a multi-championship winner and leading the points. Zero championships and 4th in points....

By character is he referring to the bike claim incident where they pulled the buddy system so they weren’t caught with a cheater bike, the flying the bird after the first turn incident or getting handed a win then saying welcome to the danger zone like a complete tool. Which one of these characters are they speaking of. They have no respect for anyone but want people to respect them, not how it works in this sport. I know the sippy cup cult kids are going to be saying haiden is an innovator in the sport, no no he’s not children at this point he’s a shit stain in the sport, James Stewart even said Deegan acts like he all this credit from the sport but has done nothing to deserve it. The kid needs to quit acting like he some badass before he walks to someone’s hauler and they send him limping back

As a Friese hater, Deegan did the same thing Friese did in A1 qualifying. Friese's problem is he does it every week. If Deegan continues to wreck people he'll wind up with the same reputation, especially if he doesn't win on the regular.

Deegan has always been like this . He’s going to take advantage of every single little mistake you make and he will race you aggressively if theirs an opening. Casey Cochran got ejected off his bike at mini o’s in 2020 when haiden made contact with him when Casey left just one small spot open in the inside of the turn. Deegan took it and shoved right past him .

@@GYPSYTALES My bad. I thought it was new. I do agree with you in that I like personalities in the sport. Barcia, Ando, Kenny... the best! However when it comes to the Deegans, I think the point was made even clearer AFTER this interview that there is a fine line between being a "character" and being a dick. I guess that is what pushing boundaries looks like...

Deegan didn't suggest anything about putting on a fake persona to sell your brand or your sponsors product. He is saying that when you have someone with a non-robotic personality, DO NOT try to kill that by telling them to stop or reigning it in. Especially when you constantly hear people complain about mundane, robotic and canned podium interviews from riders. Thats what he is saying and its a shame that you don't get it.

This is what Brian is great at marketing. If travis did not play along there is no Deegan brand. If Brian didn't play his roll there was no travis. Yes they are great athletes and regardless to the "good cop bad cop" they would have made money but when you thing back to 90s early 2000 freestyle you remember the all American kid and the rebel. I think harden is trying to find that one racer that will play the good cop bad cop and take both of them to the next level.

This is a subject matter that we should expect Brian and his boy to be highly convicted about. Their brand has been their livelihood and being different, for better or worse, is how they've built their family business. So in this moment, we are getting the defiant Deegan middle finger to the industry. Eh, Deegans be Deeganing.
