Physics Ninja looks at the precession of a bicycle wheel subjected to a torque from the force of gravity. The change in angular momentum results in a slow precession of the bicycle wheel around an axis of rotation.

Chase the torque! This really helps me understanding how it works. Thanks ninja, like your chops a lot.

I feel stupid watching this... not because I fail to understand what you're talking about but because I doubt I could explain it as well as you do. Nice job! The "Ninja chop" was good for a laugh too... that earned a subscribe.

thanks for the video. By the way, It'll help a lot if you can explain why it precesses opposite way at the end of the video. Shouldn't the torque caused by the gravity still pointing towards the camera?

When you apply a force to the angular momentum vector, how is the R vector defined. It seems to be a different situation then an R vector from the point of rotation or axis of rotation used to compute the angular momentum vector? Thanks. Love your videos, and your passion for physics.

The vector R is needed to define the torque applied by a force. You first pick a pivot point, in this case a point that doesn't move is a good choice, where the rope ties onto the wheel axis. The vector R starts at that point and goes toward the point where a force is being applied. I have another video on gyroscopic motion which looks into the math of angular momentum in a little more detail.

@Physics Ninja 👍 But how about when you were holding the wheel with both hands and jerking it. How do you pick a pivot point when you don't know which way it is going to move. When the force is perpendicular to the angular velocity vector the length of R determines torque magnitude. There must be some objective way to determine R in that situation?
