I love the design and proportion. The colour is just perfect, this really Is the epitome of a british autumnal country brogue. The more I look the more I love cheaney shoes.

I love the punch medallion in front the most on the Cheaney but the medallion of hand grade Crockett jones is unbeatable

I had a poor exprerience with Cheaney. A pair of toe-cap oxfords had a couple of nails sticking up inside the shoe. As a result I lost confidence in the brand & opted for a refund. I've had a pair of Crockett & Jones Pembroke for 18 years & they've worn well. Also the country shoes from Trickers look good.

In Scotland and Ireland you sometimes have difficulty distinguishing the rivers from the (marginally) drier land. Brogues were developed because basically your feet would be full of water all day long. Having done a lot of hillwalking in Scotland I can confirm that it is often easier to walk up a stream than through the bogs that want to suck your boots off. Modern footwear will still get very wet inside (though gaiters up to the knee help) which is why Goretex lined boots are not the best idea. Once the water does get into the boots the Goretex does a nice job of keeping your feet in a puddle all day, giving you a modern version of trench foot and rotting the insides of the boot. Good leather boots without a plastic membrane will keep most of the water out and crucially dry out a lot quicker when the water inevitably does get inside. Perhaps I should punch some brogueing holes in my walking boots.....

Lol. Great comment. I remember this from my walking trails in the highlands when I lived in Glasgow. Oh… the memories. We do visit but I miss my time there.

For info, the colour is called "dark leaf". This shoe is also available with a commando sole which is called the Avon C(ommando) instead of Avon R(ubber).

Agree that this model is very comfortable and very true to size. I love heavy English country brogues but so many have weird lasts that are short and wide. I’ll even name some - Trickers Bourton, Loake Chester, and Barker Nairn. All oddly short & wide lasts that require a thicker sock with an average foot and can appear stubby on the foot. The Avon does not have this problem and looks and feels great on the foot.

I am not sure if you were comparing Allen Edmonds welt stitching to the Chaney or the whole shoe but I’d put these above AE. I like AE different styles but their quality control can be questionable. I have one pair with the clicking or Butt crack is about an inch on the left and maybe a quarter inch on the right. I think AE selling point is the sizing. Of course I would have never looked at the clicking if it weren’t for WSG so thanks

I am no longer a big fan of the heavy, rounded toe, derby. This said, the one you hav today is a lovely example. Beautiful and thanks for the info and sharing!

How do these fair against Trickers country shoe or C & J Pembroke?

I’ve been considering these but the dark leaf looks almost tan or c-shade rather than the more mahogany/ox blood color it looks like on their website.

What colour are these really? Cheaney now sell these in Dark Leaf, but on their website they look almost red. This video makes them look more like tan.

This is dark leaf. There is always variation in the color. Dark leaf is tan but like autumn leaves they can get more red depending on how the folks mix the burnish that day. Remember that this is a hand spray burnish on top of acorn, with several layers. So variation is to be expected. Part of what separates each pair.
