I work in government and I once had a Somali official visit my office. He was highly educated and ambitious. He was determined to make his country a better place for all of its citizens and it's the reason why he visited my country. He wanted to learn from our experience and try to apply it in his own country and I could see why. Our countries have lots of similarities in term of geography and socioeconomic conditions. Even personally I had lots of similarities with him, we have the same first name, we have similar hobby, and I found him to be very likeable in general. It's been years now and I'm still waiting for a good news from Somalia. I'm sure he's still working hard now. Stay strong, my Somali brothers. Another great video, friend. As a African myself (Nigerian) it annoys me when most people only attribute Africa's current problems to "colonialism or racism", effectively removing personal responsibility of us Africans, and ignore more important factors like geography, climate, socioeconomic systems, political unity and leadership. Thanks for focusing on those areas.

It is a combination of many factors, you have to point out the issues that are over looked. Geography, Culture, Development, and Oppression are the huge issues. People only oppress you because they can, under development is asking for oppression. Your ignorance is used against your better judgement. Oppression is a factor given the history, being dependant on former oppressors is psychologically damaging, anything can be abused, developing is key.

To ignore the effects of the Europeans on Africa is just as silly as to attribute all of Africas modern problems to the Europeans. Since the end of the Cold War Europe has not been involved in Africa much and (outside of France) it is incorrect to attribute *SOME* current african issue to the Europeans. But at the same time to even imply that the effect of 500 years of slavery and colonialism would not leave a profound mark on the problems africa faces or that half a millennium of colonialism and foreign interference can disappear in just 30 years (end of Cold War) is absurd on its face. Take Congo for example. King leopold killed half the population in an event that killed as many as the holocausts then created extractive industries that sucked the region dry, then Belgium assassinated their first president plunging the country into civil war combined with the fact that when Congo gained their independence there were less than 100 Congolese people who were educated past the age 10 because of explicit laws written by Europeans are the main reasons for congos current problems. *all other factors are secondary* without European interference Congo would not have been in the condition it is in today. Even Nigeria. The unification of the rural Islamic north and the urban Christian south by the United Kingdom is the direct cause of the civil war Nigeria had less than 50 years later. Cameroon is currently having a civil war between English and French speakers that is a direct result of European colonialism. Again Europe is not as involved in Africa anymore but to ignore the very real and current effects of European colonialism on the African continent shows a profound lack of understanding of modern African issues and is essentially just carrying water for colonisers.

Yeah, finally having a permanent central government again definitely helps (even if it only has real control over about 2/3 of the country). You can see it when looking at Mogadishu on Google Earth: there’s been significant reconstruction and brand-new development over about the last decade. The main stadium got renovated, the airport got a new terminal, even a mall.

Somalia never intended to invade the densely populated highlands of Ethiopia though? They only wanted the Somali inhabited desert planes that they were actually succeeding in taking before Cuba and Russia joined against them. They didn't need to take Addis Ababa they juts needed to secure the Ogaden (which would've been easy as they had the full support of the locals) and then hold it against the Ethiopian military till they gave up.
@matro8147
@matro8147 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately in the eyes of modern geopolitics it doesn’t matter. Ogaden was a territory under Ethiopias jurisdiction by international law, and unless you were USA or Russia those laws are written in stone. The best we Somalis could have hoped for at the time was a proxy war where we aid the locals and push for a sovereign state. An invasion was not only unnecessary but it weaken Somalia’s military against dealing with internal strife. Im indifferent to Siads regime but I would prefer security by our own people over African union troops and other shisheeye. Somalia was not responsible for NFD or Ogadenia anymore than it was realized for Djibouti. Wadan iyo dad waa kala labo IMO.

As somebody who's mom was a immigrant from Somalia I love and wish better for Somalia. My Grandma was once almost executed while shopping by a soldier because she had a western clan accent but luckily my uncle managed to tell the guards to stop. More recently also my Grandpa was a very smart man who even he was once Barre (a Dictator of Somalia who almost defeated Ethiopia) Daughter's boyfriend and even met him, but sadly while in a school meeting he was killed by a suicide bomber.

4:58 "insect resins" must be mislabeled. the only insect resin with commercial value is shellac (made by a type of bark louse that creates resinous shells around branches it feeds on for protection), and that's not that valuable and made on the indian subcontinent in somewhat wetter climate. resins that somlia produces are frankincense and myrrh, which are plant resins with no insect involvement (made by cutting shrubby trees and later collecting the hardened resin). the percentage of revenue looks plausible for frankincense and myrrh, the stuff is worth a lot. if there is shellac production in somalia that I am not aware of, it would certainly be a smaller industry than plant resins, so that image must be labelled incorrectly.

Somalia has some of the oldest history in the world Ancient history of The land of punt Macrobia Mufune, mundus, opone These city states existed for centuries being a strong part of the silk trade and global spice trade E (Edit) I like how you talked about somali history hOser Just wish you went into a bit more detail with the history For example Arab and Somali merchants barred Indian merchants from trading in the free port cities of the Arabian peninsula because of the nearby Roman presence. However, they continued to trade in the port cities of the Somali peninsula, which was free from any Roman threat or spies. The reason for barring Indian ships from entering the wealthy Arabian port cities was to protect and hide the exploitative trade practices of the Somali and Arab merchants in the extremely lucrative ancient Red Sea-Mediterranean Sea commerce.The Indian merchants for centuries brought large quantities of cinnamon from Ceylon and the Far East to Somalia and Arabia. This is said to have been the best-kept secret of the Arab and Somali merchants in their trade with the Roman and Greek world. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maritime_history_of_Somalia

Like the caste system in India and religious zealotry in the middle east, clans are an ancient idea. Clans were good in ancient times when you needed your family to have your back. Today, the concepts of property ownership and common laws trump clans. But people in power like power, and clan heads have power. Very few leaders in history have ever given up power willingly. Somalia will likely fight with itself until the neighboring countries get rich enough to set things straight. Either Somalia will be pacified and turned into a vassal, or it will be pacified and left independent simply so that business in the region can prosper. It is tough for a nation to industrialize if their neighbor still lives like Mongol Warlords.

@@Alexander-sr7qm The civil war and the instability in the country is very overexaggerated. As long as you don't run into the boonies, things will be safe. Somaliland is praised, when in actuality it is even poorer than Somalia and has even worse geography. The civil war has been over for years, and the conflict has been essentially reduced to cleaning up a terrorist insurgency that has taken root it small exclaves across the nation. Living here isn't a live threating choice, and life is actually quite serene at times.
