I am a victim of the R151F gearbox with its weak 5th gear( which blew up ) and the gearbox to transfer case connecting shaft with its spline stripping problem in my old troopy…. $3300 for a new gearbox and $350 for the upgraded connecting shaft…… was still all good when I sold it. Loved my troopy.

How much does the gearbox upgrade cost for the smaller H151 box? I tow a bit. Though careful to load the 5th gear to much.

I have a grandpa spec 80 series 1HZ with H150F and would love a taller 5th as we don't tow and vehicle is unmodified. Does 2800rpm at around 110kmh. Is that possible? What is the best swap or modification for this?

Is the 80 series turbo box able to fitted into a 100 series NA? I know the input shafts are different as are the gear lever position

Bit confusing as i thought the H151F was found behind the twin cam petty motors and factory turbo diesel variants. The unit he correctly identifies as a H150F is standard fare behind NA 1HZ's and the like and is easily identified by the 21 spline input you can see in the vid, same as his R series right next to it. The petty and factory turbo diesel variants have a 14 spline.

Naaah at the end of the day the H150/H151 are the same size geartrains with minimal differences ....The size difference to the R151 is obvious in this video .. which is what the story is about - not the technical differences in spline counts or synchros ... its SIZE which matters :-)

Hey, I’m running a 1uz v8 in my 40 series and looking for gearbox options. What would you suggest out of the 2? Not for a work horse just a fun daily.

You'll need to upgrade to the larger gearbox & transfer as shown above :-)

Do you need a turbo transmission for a super charger on a 3.4L 5vgze mated to a r151f? Or will the stock r151f work

Does my land cruiser 105 with 1hz non turbo engine have the r151f gearbox ? I do mostly city driving with loaded trunk. Maybe a lil towing. Should I be worried about the gearbox ?

Na don’t be worried. Imo the R151 is a very solid box. I’m running it in my turbo diesel hilux and towed a 2.5 ton caravan from vic to Queensland many times and it’s held up fine. I rekon it’s down to the driver changing to too high gears too early and lugging the car and putting excessive load on the gearbox

The r151 is in my standard 1kzte prado with a factory turbo incooler . Am I right?

yup could be - they definately came out in the Prados, but less prone to fail due to the vehicle setup.

You mention that heat is the killer for the R151 gearbox, is it possible to add an oil cooler to help resolve this problem?

Sure it may help, but the biggest killer is the position of 5th gear and/or shockloading the gears with high turbo boost.

I have an R151 on my *turbo'd* Hilux. Never had issues :/ Maybe because it's a smaller vehicle than the Landcruiser?

too many variants in the failures but mostly come down to driver, level of boost and towing or carrying load

It must be bad drivers that have issues with the R series mines got 400 tho ks on it running 35s on 18psi boost runs fine .

You know the 1HD-FT and FTE are single cam 24 valve. The petrol is double over head cam and never had a turbo

@@BigMoistMuffin he definitely said HD engnes. 1HZ is NA 12 valve SOHC port injection 1HDT is turbo 12 valve SOHC direct injection 1HDFT is turbo 24 valve SOHC direct injection 1HDFTE is turbo 24 valve SOHC electronically controlled direct injection

80/100/105 series 1hz's had the h150 1hd and fz engines had the h151 1HZ's never had the r151 unless they came in the very late 79s, r151's were fitted to vdj79s only (in the landcruiser range) please get your info correct

Haha you have no idea what you are talking about! You've got it the wrong way around! HZJ105 ONLY came out with the R151 gearboxes here in Australia. All 80 series are H150/H151. All factory turbos & V8s are H151/H152s. HZJ79 Series ONLY came out in R151. OMG You are dreaming if you think the VDJs came out in R151s - there would be such a world-wide class action against Toyota they'd go broke! Get YOUR info correct Not-So-Logical !

Um was really keen on a gearbox from these guys but they are confused about designs in their own video. 1hd-t, 1hd-ft and 1hd-fte all are single cam engines. There aren’t any dual overhead cam Diesel engines in the toyota line up apart from the 1vd.

Jack Hare I think he was referring to the petrol motor. The single cam turbo diesel and twin cam petrol motors have the H box hence why it came sounding as if he was referring to a twin cam diesel.

Plus 80 series 1hz's use a H150F tranny, petrols and factory turbos run H151F...only 105 series 1hz's run the R150F box. Not sure what these blokes were on about

@@jimmy2824 My spec says KUN26R Turbo D4D 2005 onwards should have R151 box ...I am confusemented.

@@markyes2041 yes correct - but this video is referring to the R151 in a landcruiser. AT the end of the day the video was to show the size difference between a HZJ105/HZJ79 gearbox to a factory turbo, petrol or 80 series gearbox

@@jimmy2824 Nope Jimmy you are wrong. the HZJ76/78/79 also run the R151 box as well as multiple models of hiluxes and some Prados. The video wasn't meant to be technical - just to show the general layperson that size does matter hehe
