The Heinze Geniol German Army Stove runs on kerosene. (Runs really crappy on diesel - don't do it.) A great surplus stove for vehicle camping. Bit too heavy for backpacking at 5.8kg (12.8 pounds).
Here is the link to my web page where you can download the manuals for this stove, both in German and in several different formats and layouts in English: www.berniedawg.com/heinze-gen... The translation of the box badge is there, too.
The bag featured in this video is widely sold on eBay as a "Czech gas mask bag". Use those search terms at eBay and you should find it. It fits the British Military #12 stove, too, about the same fitment as the German army stove in this video.
The stainless steel windshield in this video is from eBay seller simonchantwus_gmail in Taiwan. He has lots of other cool stove stuff, too. Just search eBay for "WINDSHIELD FOR Heinze Geniol STOVE". A little spendy, but if we don't support third party cottage stove part suppliers, we won't have parts in the future. Don't be a cheap skate.
Questions about this or other stoves? KZfaq comments kinda sucks for that. Please don't write me pages describing your stove problem in comments. Thanks! Just drop an email to: bd@berniedawg.com
Intro/Outro music courtesy of KZfaq Audio Library. They say I don't have to credit this artist this time around, but I will anyway: Jimmy Fontanez/Media Right Productions, song: "Feel the Funk".

One little fun fact: The starter assembly as well as the pressure gauge and parts of the pump assembly seem to be directly borrowed from the Petromax HK500 lantern. Which would make sense as the two were in use in the German Bundeswehr around the same time. I would not be surprised at all if some of the parts were interchangeable.

@Odd One Out The company that produced these sorts of stoves and lanterns in Germany was Ehrich & Graetz & J. Hirshorn. Through a complicated history spanning from before WWI and through WWII and thereafter, they used the brand names Petromax, Heinze, Geniol, Aida, Hirschorn and Graezea. Further complicating things is that the company factory was located on the Eastern side of the Berlin wall post-WWII and a second version of the company formed on the Western side of the Wall thereafter. Point being, the one company was the outfit that made German lanterns and stoves for many years and market all those different brand names using the same factory specs and setups. So, no great surprise to see the similarity in parts on the military stoves and lanterns since they were made by the same single company. Parts are (mostly) interchangeable among these brands. BD

@Denton Slovacek Thanks! They are pretty well designed, alright. I have a second example I should show sometime. The Heinze-Geniol stoves are still around on German eBay but at much higher prices (and with higher Covid-caused shipping rates) than they were back 10 years ago when I got mine. The early bird gets the worm while the second mouse gets the cheese. 👍 Thanks for watching! BD

Yeah, I saw the pump thingy. It looked like I'd need another bag for that. I'm thinking to rebuild the pump assembly into a floating-cup Swedish-style mechanism. Or maybe just make a second assembly that could be swapped out so I don't change the Heinze for collector value. The fixed pump cup holder on the Heinze is a mistake in my opinion. Or, maybe I'm just not as energetic as those German soldiers. (Ha! Of course I'm not that energetic!) 😄 BD

Bundeswehr sure has some awesome looking stoves. I have two of the Enders 9061 military models just because they look cool. The Heinze Geniol looks like a cooperation between Optimus/Primus and Petromax where they've made a bigger version of the Optimus 85 Loke with a casing similar to the 111, then added a Petromax pressure indicator and quick lighter. I guess they've dropped a similar windscreen as the one on the 111T due to the quick lighter. Anyways, great presentation video.

@gnukkignukk7536 Glad you like those stoves. For the record, your conjectures about cooperation are not likely to have any basis in fact. These companies likely didn't cooperate in any way to produce this stove type. Not to say other stoves may have influenced the design by the engineers who drew the plans. BD

So are you ‘all kerosene’ for the over landing gear? Lanterns and such as well? Do you use any type of space heater?
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
I can do all kerosene, but we are "programmed in multiple techniques". 😉 Most of the week-or-less trips get white gas, kerosene, or even DA. Fluent with all. But, longer trips we just go with propane to avoid having to refuel at all and for a smaller transport package. I have a lot of lanterns. Don't use lanterns very often - when it gets dark I usually go to sleep, or sit up and watch the stars in the dark without 40K of lumens to hide the sky. I've never used any sort of space heater though I have examples of kero, WG and propane that function and that I could use. I bought a nice down bag a few years back. Wish I'd done it 30 years ago. Keeps me plenty toasty. Spouse has a her-sized version of the same bag. Down. The way to go. 👍 BD

Excellent video and great timing - I ordered one of these a few days ago. Do you have any thoughts on whether the rapid preheater could cause damage over the long term due to uneven heating of the burner? Some people recommend adding a wick and preheating with meths to avoid this.
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
You can certainly preheat with meths if you wish. I think the issues that people report using the quick lighter are bogus - caused by clumsiness and foolishness. If you stick with 90 seconds or less, the burner isn't going to get hot enough to damage brazed tubing or cause burner tube cracking. (Spoken as a guy who's brazed hundreds (thousands, now?) of burners, building them or for repairs, and who also does heat'n'air cleaning of burners.) The folks who damage their burners are probably letting the preheat go too long and/or maybe have had too much to drink (alcohol abuse is a common issue among a vocal minority of stove collectors). As I demonstrate in the vid, you can get it to operating temp in 30-45 seconds. Easy-peasy and no baloney. 😁 BD

Thanks for a wrll presented synopsis ✅ Why do you think this model has such good range control from simmer to high heat ? I’m looking for stove for my boat and want a reliable simmer . Love the channel !
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 5 ай бұрын
@cloudsculptor1 The regulated silent burners used in this German military stove were among the last produced by German maker Geniol, a branch of Petromax, many long years ago. The burners are essentially copies of the original Primus designs from the 1930’s and were used in most kerosene-fueled boat stoves by Radius, Primus, Optimus, Homestrand/Kenyon and Taylors. They are designed to properly vaporize and burn light, quality, kerosene fuel. Today, they are pretty much no longer made as most boaties have long-ago transitioned to LPG. Some regulated silent kerosene burners are now coming out of India of sketchy quality. But, the good news is that with minimal care, these burners will not die. They can be rebuilt with available parts and can be cleaned if they become fouled. Long use of these burners (or any liquid fuel burner of any fuel type) at low simmers will cause the burners to clog. They can be disassembled and the sludge burned out with a torch. I have videos that show methods of cleaning burners. Burners should last forever, but, sadly, many among the boating community have foolishly taken a “replace-and-discard” approach. This is part of the reason why these antique burners are increasing in rareness and cost so much more than they did only 15 years ago. Diligent looking on eBay or other online sales site of your choice should score you all sorts and models of ready-to-sail traditional boat stoves using these types of burners. It’s on you to educate yourself on models/brands but both my KZfaq videos and my website give you a good start. @BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 17 күн бұрын
@user-hq4sb6yu4i Seriously? 🫢 Okay. I’ll bite. For instructional purposes on how to find stoves… Here’s how I would go about finding one from watching this video and from reading all the information in the description box below the video. First, I’d take the title of the video, "Heinze Geniol German Army Cooker Stove”, and plug that into my handy Google search box. Hit the return key and… voila! Up comes a whole list of hits including the link to a seller on German eBay who sells them. It’s a German surplus military stove after all. Makes sense that it’d be good to search for them on German eBay. They sure aren’t cheap though. Whoa! So! I go to German eBay and search on “Heinze Geniol Kocher” (kocher is German for cooker, or stove). Voila! (again) There are four or five listings there for these stoves. Again, not cheap, especially with overseas shipping. But... They are Army surplus. They come from the German Army. You won’t find them in other countries or on Chinese auction sites. And, they are not purchase-able as a new product because they are old military vintage stoves. Makes sense now? Good. Learning and thinking skills are important in this crazy world of ours. Here’s wishing you a positive outcome and a happy life with your new searching skills. You’re welcome! 👍😎🙏 BD

@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@Sunnmöre Hinterland Ummm... the windshield is more than that when shipping is added. The two Heinze stoves I have were substantially less (about a third) of the price you are quoting because they were purchased back a few years when they first were hitting the surplus market. A little advice for you. Stove rule #1: If it's collectible, it won't ever go down in price. Stove rule #2: if you wait to buy it later it won't be around anymore or will cost even more than now. Honestly... you'll *never* find one in your "price range" because that "price range" is just something you made up in your head and has nothing to do with real and factual stuff like supply and demand. I've seen the attitude from lots of fellers over the years. They never get what they want and the grow angry and bellyache about it for years. Better to pony up the bucks right now for what you want or just give it up and move on to some other less $$$-demanding hobby. "It's all in what you value." - G. Harrison 1976. 😇 BD
