Haas' Wireless Intuitive Probing System (WIPS) is a game changer for shops wanting to increase the accuracy and speed with which they set tool and work offsets. Resident Applications expert John Nelson breaks down how WIPS works in this 1st part of our "WIPS How-To" series.
Continue on to Part 2 and Part 3 which we'll be posting all at once. We also have several more "WIPS How-To" episodes planned for release, so stay tuned.

Couple of suggestions for setting the runout on the Renishaw probe.... 1. Do not drink coffee beforehand. 2. Take a deep breath and relax. You will get frustrated the first few tries. 3. Use 2 allen keys to set opposing screws at the same time. 4. Do not skimp - get it right. 5. When you tighten the lock screws - it will bump it out of concentricity. 6. Even after you have done it many times, it is still slow. 7. Buy a spare stylus ahead of time, you will eventually need it. Probes save huge amounts of time and scrap - but only if you take the time to learn how to set them up and make use of them. I have not used an edge finder in over 10 years. I can touch off a rack of 24 tools with one minute of my time then walk away while it runs the touch cycle. In the end, I can locate any origin and have all my tools within a tenth or two with very little effort. It is so fast.

Factory400 I couldn’t agree more with you. I’ve dialed/replaced/calibrated more then enough prove stylus’s to know that frustration is fast setting if you let it. Instead of Allen keys, Sandvik in their dubious effort of providing hex’s with everything, has some handy 2mm wrenches that make it easy. Users choice tho. Nothing is worse then spending 20mins dialing it in and calibrating it then watch some greenhorn come in and crush the stylus 5mins after 💩

I drank coffee right before starting, that woke me up and made me not sloppy and loose. If I'm sleepy, I don't have much control over my coordination, everything tends to fall out of my hands... Edit: But the rest, I couldn't agree more 😂

Is one of the small adjustment screws on top a locking screw or are they both adjustment? I’m told that one of the adjustment screws at the bottom is for locking.

Do I need to use a ring gauge for an NGC controller? I was told I don’t have to on the newer machines but the manual and this video says to use one??

When I bought my NGC machine (VF-2SSYT) the sales guy set my WIPS feedrate to 60 in/min. How do I adjust that back to 120 in/min which it appears to be default?
@derekfriedrichs
@derekfriedrichs 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean, it doesn't really matter what the length of the gauge is...is this for the 1st time set up because this doesn't make sense if you need to redo this at some point down the road.

I just have one question, what is the accuracy you are looking for? For example, the triggered length of the probe isn't equal to the physical length of the probe, which is measured using the methods described here in the video.

After doing all calibration steps I run a known good program and I’m getting a z over travel error when I use the probe to touch off. But not when touching off manually. Can anyone help with this?

Am I correct in that the Classic control uses a different method of work offset probe length calibration - with the shim on top of the ring gage?
@lostinacrowd
@lostinacrowd 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. With this setup though you do the tool probe first and then calibrate the work probe from that so no need for the gage or shim.

Since the stylus can bend, is it theoretically possible that when you jog the dial test indicator on it to check runout, the indicator can push the stylus out of center from spindle? You could then be adjusting the runout of the tip to 0 but not actually be aligned with the spindle.
@lostinacrowd
@lostinacrowd 2 жыл бұрын
I would think it would push it with the same force so it wouldn't matter. I try to use an indicator that requires very low force for this reason though.

When you press the probe against the tool-setter, which gives first? Who decides the rule? What if on different manufacturers of probe and tool-setter, the spring force is almost the same?
@olituts
@olituts 3 жыл бұрын
Usually they will be the same manufacturer but if not it doesnt matter as they are both designed to trigger very quickly. Plus there is software that compensates for the trigger delay.

Is there a video for the previous wips system? I think its for the classic controller. The one where you touch the tool probe calibration tool on the ring gauge with a shim. Thanks

When measuring the length of the up-side-down endmill to use to calibrate the tool setter, why is it not important to get it accurate? Seems that would cause a tool's Z measurement to be off when loading a new tool?
@familiebuenk6982
@familiebuenk6982 5 жыл бұрын
its not important because all your tools(and spindle probe) are going to be related to your up-side-down endmill. keep in mind: you are calibrating your toolprobe using the up-side-down endmill not measuring your up-side-down endmill. After that you measure all your tools. but at the end i am not recommending this kind of method because the moment you cant find your up-side-down endmill because your collegue used it OR you unscrewed your collet then you are screwed. after that you have to calibrate your toolprobe and spindle probe and all of the tools you are using. Rather use a toollength-calibration-tool. then you have an absolute length. even if you have to use a different toollength-calibration-tool later on to calibrate your toolprobe that wouldn't be a problem - as long as your machine knows the length of the new toollength-calibration-tool. i dont recommend calibrating your spindle probe the way he does either - using the toolprobe. the spindle probe needs some force to switch. that defines the length of your spindle probe. I recommend the following procedure: 1. calibrate your toolprobe using a toollength-calibration-tool 2. measure the length of a new end mill(6mm in diameter for example) using your just calibrated toolprobe 3. use the new end mill to mill approx. Ap 0.05mm of a part. while you keep on the same Z level you just milled you set your Z value to zero. 4. minimalize your spindle probe runout by adjusting the screws just like the guy in the video did. 5. then calibrate your spindle probe length by touching the face that you just milled. 6. calibrate your spindle probes' runout and tip measurement using a calibration ring calibration done.

@@familiebuenk6982 Thank you for taking time to explain this. So in essence what you are saying is that all of the Z values of our tools are then relative to the tool setter. There are no absolute values here....

@@familiebuenk6982 I am have the same problem you are describing. I have calibrated the whole WIPS system twice now and my parts keep coming in undersized on the height about .002-.003 on the second operation I flip them over to finish the other side touching off the probe to reset my zero off of some soft jaws I made. on step (5) as you described above are you just running the probe height calibration template to set your probe on the now fresh milled new zero ? I just want to be certain this is what you are describing . Thanks!
