If you're a glutton for punishment this video is for you!
Just to be clear, this will compromise the integrity of the back sheet and likely reduce the useful life of the solar panel at the least. With possible ramifications I don't even know about.

20 years ago, it was relatively common to find 72 cell solar panels intended for field wiring to either 12v or 24v nominal systems. Even back then higher voltage made sense, but now with MPPT so cheap it seemed at first strange to bother with this mod. Then I remembered solar panels became cheaper even faster and the used ones cheaper still. My 20 year old panels were just under $4 / watt and that was a great deal at the time.

Absolutely worth it! Just do it carefully! That's not exactly how I got TO the bus bars, but that's exactly how I cut and bent it up. That's a damn good video! Awesome how you have old panels to play with and I think you're onto something here. This trick will make solar generators more widely available through residential panel modification and reuse, saving money by going pwm instead of mppt. Not to mention the huge wattage per panel. Santan Solar is my favorite stop every time I swing thru Gilbert AZ. Should check them out if you need panels!

You can solder with an iron in a fire or a magnify glass using the sun to stay on the solar theme just for reasons.

Oh those are great ideas! I did some solar arc welding in another video. Figuring out how to solder with the sun would be neat.

how about a switch so you have 2 panel mode or full 1 panel mode, I know this is crazy talk. Imagine the one panel to rule them all and in the darkness bind them

What type of panel and crystal, polycrystalline or monocrystalline? How do I know where to cut the splint for a skin type panel?

I have some left over commercial sized panels, Voc of 49v. I'm wondering of I can do this with them, just for fun, to charge some 12v stuff. I've already burnt out a jackery trying to connect the panel to it.

If they are good panels it’d be better to use an mppt controller to charge something. Instead of hacking them up :). If they are 49voc probably would be a pain too as that’s likely a half cell panel so a lot more work to cut up.
