Your playing is outstanding, technically, and with such style and range of notion; gentle/feral, leaving out all the bad notes. Your knowledge is formidable and sets you apart. Your presentations are very entertaining, as well. Witty with tact and kindness, veracity known to all. I'm old, witness to much. Still picking and writing, more days than not. You have so much great music inside you. Love it when you demo your subjects. You make the"touch" look so easy, and it's the hardest part to acquire. I think you're going to leave a mark. Stay safe and blessings on you.

I personally much prefer the Gibson DC shapes ... I wouldn't mess with trying to disguise what it has become, ie. Better imo. No doubt I will get some flak for not loving the LP Single Cut ... but, remember, it's a personal opinion, just like yours ! As it sounds great as well, I'd leave it in it's 'Deep Purple' colour scheme also to retain that history. If Trogly were to be invited, he could probably help with identifying this guitar as he is pretty Les Paul obsessed and he documents so many of them. Loved the superb sound from your 'new toy' ...

In the late 1960s-early 70s, a famous music store in Memphis, Tennessee called Strings and Things began making double cutaway Les Pauls out of regular Les Pauls. I think it started as a joke but then it caught on and they began selling them, The place caught on fire and closed at one point. It was open about 10 years ago.…..If you find old Strings and Things ads online they usually have a double cutaway someplace in the ad. Often along with naked hippies. There's a very good possibility this is a refinished Strings and Things Gibson. It falls within the time frame.... All the ones I saw were sunburst or white. So you may want to poke around Memphis and find someone that remembers those guitars.

I think it's pretty cool and sounds great. I have a number of Les Paul's and would not be ashamed to have this in the rack next to them. As for famous De-Luxe players, in the late 70's both Thin Lizzy's Scott Gorham and the legend that is Brian Robertson, played these and can be seen on many videos using them. They brought them because they were much cheaper than "Standard" models at that time. Both players said they were highly underrated and sounded fantastic. Keep up the great videos. Peace, from the UK.

I was thinking the same thing, but it would stil be a _heavily modified_ '69, so unlikley to be anywhere even close to top dollar, and the cost of having a skilled luthier restore the body shape and refinish it would be as much or more than the increase in value. In short, IMO "nice idea, but not worthwhile."

There is something so sexy about a 2 tone sunburst Strat with a rosewood neck. My first guitar teacher (mid 90s) had a 1970 3 tone sunburst Strat body with an early 60s veneer rosewood neck. He fitted a set of EMG SAs in the late 80s. Sacrilege you might say. When I went for lessons, he played into a really crappy Vantage branded 30w transistor amp but he used to get the most lovely clean smoky jazzy sound out of that guitar. Even though I'm primarily a bass player these days I've got a collection of Strats, Teles and Squier 51s in bits up in my loft ready for my next non bass project. Love your channel and keep up the great work!

@@Syzfox Jimmy Page owned a 3 humbucker black Les Paul Custom that he used as a session player from around 1962 to 1967. Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Joe Walsh also rediscovered the Les Paul in the early to mid 60's! Matthew's guitar could be a 1969, (as he mentioned), Les Paul Deluxe, which came with mini humbuckers and brown control covers. At that time the larger headstock was also used. Still, removing the toggle switch, filling in the hole and shaping the horn took some work and really looks well done. @ 17:06 you can see where the toggle switch cavity was filled in on the upper horn!

I'm digging that - it's like a cross between a late 50s Les Paul Special, a Deluxe from the early 70s and a "The Paul" with the pickup switch. They did a really good job to be fair to them - I wonder if this was done in the early 80s by someone who was a fan of Pat Travers as he had a very similar custom model

I'll buy that guitar from you since you don't know how to play it. Hit me up I don't think the quality went down in the 70s. It was a different style and different wood. They seemed to be experimenting. Ibanez took over and later 70s as the favored guitar. Gibson excluded the tremolo on a a lot of makes. But don't tell BB King. Still many artists like Clapton Paige and Iommi rarely used the tremolo if ever

Hello Matt, my name is Astro. I am actually going to go the other way than most of these comments, I would absolutely love to see the process of “undoing” the “charm” Because it was originally a gold top, and because of its rare, non pancake body, I would love to see it returned back to the proper shape. The gold makes this possible. To me, as it sits, it looks like a high school project, it misses the subtle beauty that the original design got right. I myself would be far more impressed seeing that old character case opened and a slightly aged Goldie sitting there. That ramble on gave me chills Matt. -Astro

Somebody evidently liked the double cutaway Les Paul concept and that's why whomever sawed off the top. I like the purple color. Looks to be a good job on it.

That mini humbucker in the bridge had a Tele sound to it.. plenty of snarl and twang. There’s something magical about those mini humbuckers, they are the twangiest humbuckers i’ve heard.. Matt I think this one of the most unique guitars you’ve had

I'm stunned that it wasn't routed for DiMarzios. My friend did his on the kitchen table with a large screwdriver.

I would get her back to a gold top look .. black back .. fill in the cut ... get her to an original routing. It may end up a bit expensive but the feeling ( IMO ) of restoring a guitar as close as it get .. is really worth it. As always great videos ! Best wishes !

I actually love the purple color, the paint job looks pretty good to be honest it wasn't done sloppily whatsoever and despite everything that guitar went through it sounds insane. For what its worth you got a sick deal man imagine if nothing was ever modified on it, it may have never ended up in your hands given it would be worth a lot more if it was kept original. Still the same wood and pickups either way! I bet it feels great too. That thing is cool as hell for a thousand bucks how can you go wrong

It might have ended up locked away in the vault of a Saudi oil sheik or a CEO, neither of whom even know how to make an A chord or much less tune it. It might have never seen the light of day again.

I kinda dig it for it's uniqueness. If you're going to restore it get a hold of Dan Erlewine at Stewmac. That dude is the magician of luthiers.

If you can make more parting it out do it. I'd like to see a full resto including replacing what was cut off. Occasionally someone restores a car that was molested in turning it into a drag car. It's a great deal of extra work which decreases profits but if the car or guitar is valuable enough it can be a worthwhile project.

I see no reason to be concerned with the horns, that said your complaints about the switch being in the way is valid. Good vid as always.

Yeah, I’d swap that with the neck pickup tone position knob. Or at least what used to be the neck tone, God knows what it is now!😆😆

When I started playing guitar back in 1974 I had a Fender Mustang, in 1976 I'd saved up for a brand new Les Paul Deluxe with the mini humbuckers. Back then I didn't dig the mini humbuckers and sold the guitar. Man oh man do I wish I'd kept that 76 with those mini humbuckers. Great find Matthew, great sounding instrument and to be honest it's a lot more interesting than if it were all original. Thank you for sharing and congrats.

Strings & Things , Memphis, Tenn. , was a very big music store in the 1970s who did that a lot. Later they started St Blues guitars. Quite a few guitar stars , Clapton, Billy Squier, did a few promos for them. They also made tele-pauls like that.
