For our halloween decoration, we used the outside light - We installed a 40w incandescent old-style bulb with the squirrel cage filament and smoked amber glass. Then we connected a fluorescent tube starter in series with the socket. It provided a really cool, unpredictable flicker. And what made it look the best was the fact that we used an incandescent lamp for an extra dramatic effect. I'm thinking of making a housing with a bypass switch, and proper starter connector in it, so that it's safely housed away, a failed starter can be replaced easily and the whole system can be in bypass mode for normal operation.

It's a neat idea, although when I see a LED bulb flicker, I would think that the bulb has gone gonsky and needs repair or replacement.

It'd be more convenient if this could be put into a socket adapter that applies flickering to any bulb screwed into it.

In theory, you could even add a sort of remote controlled aspect, right? Using a IR reciever and 1 extra pin on the tiny, you could get it so the light would act normally and flicker depending on IR toggle...

not being a smart ass, but doesn't that mofset gets really hot? and 7805 regulator could get to hot too, cause it's been feed with 19 volts, which is a lot, it could melt the glue and the resistor, but everything works fine right?
@greatscottlab
@greatscottlab 9 жыл бұрын
Exogen Design I always test all circuits that I build in detail. The MOSFETs does not even get warm but the regulator heated up quite a bit. Not enough to melt anything but it was warm. Of course I do not show my tests in the video, because that would bore the viewer.

Hi ! can you use a regular incandescent light bulb for this project ?? Thanks in advance.
@l4d2160
@l4d2160 9 жыл бұрын
+cjimenez1203 The way he did it here is not possible. Incandescent bulbs work so differently it's not even funny. In an incandescent bulb you have a tungsten wire which is heated, and thus glows, by 120 volts AC (or 240 if you're outside the US.) The only real way one could maybe do this, is to design a circuit which trips a relay on and off, and the relay controls the bulb. However, with that many components, it would never fit inside most if not all fixtures without somebody noticing something is wrong. You'd have to stuff it up inside the ceiling. TL;DR: No.
@JaqiesGadgets
@JaqiesGadgets 9 жыл бұрын
+Bryan Young Incorrect. First off, a relay would be terrible for flickering simply because of the physical limitations of the relay - this would fry it almost instantly, and second it is entirely possible but would have to be in it's own case, and the controlling device would be better off being either a solid state relay or an SCR or such. TL;DR: Yes, but in it's own case instead of inside the bulb.

Simplest way to flicker any load is to connect flourscent light starter in series to the input 230v or 110v supply.. We don't need all these programming and stuff which u have shown.. Yup ur idea works but mine is too simpler to get the same output...

Doesn't that 7805 get quite hot when dropping 19V with it? Sure, you don't draw much current, but still ...
@theiceman259
@theiceman259 9 жыл бұрын
I think all the LEDs are in series so most of the voltage is dropped
@GregorOttmann
@GregorOttmann 9 жыл бұрын
theiceman259 The 7805 is connected in parallel to the LEDs, so it actually gets the full 23V. That can clearly be seen in the final schematic. (HACKED!: Flickering Light Bulb for Halloween)
@greatscottlab
@greatscottlab 9 жыл бұрын
Gregor Ottmann Well It didn't get that hot. I would still call it warm. Otherwise I would had to use the body of the bulb as a heatsink.
@theiceman259

Gregor Ottmann I assumed you were talking about the mosfet, I'm unfamiliar with the part numbers :P
@skylinevspec000
@skylinevspec000 9 жыл бұрын
The attiny wouldnt draw much power at all and as it is just controlling the mosfet, although there is a 19v drop the current is tiny so the heat output is tiny. If he had put through 200ma or so then it would need heatsinking.
