This concept was great to hear put into words. To intentionally struggle and work to create is a lot different than just executing the tried and true methods. I felt the same way, but didn’t realize it. Bought a 9 year old Fuji X100T, terrible autofocus, small file sizes, a bit soft wide open, and I’m loving it!

God this is great and MUCH needed at the moment! Thank yall for changing it up and opening up about the creative soul.

I'm so glad to see this, and that vlog by Peter from Iceland on that 720! I've been watching your journey on youtube. Fellow polar addict. Ill be visiting Iceland for the first time this summer.

I shoot a Leica MP film camera, and a Leica M11 digital camera. The rangefinder style of shooting is what kicked up the creative passions for me personally. I began shooting with an older 35mm rangefinder camera, a Minolta E series fixed 40mm lens f/1.7 camera to be specific. This was back when digital had first come about and God only knows I couldn't afford anything in the realm of digital. As I was shooting a lot of my monthly Flo sponsorship content when I was skateboarding, so my Grandma Faye went and found this Minolta in the thrift store she worked in and picked it up, gave it to me. Thus was born my photography venture. Maybe it's just something about film, something about the process? I think most likely the difference is that getting to know the process of photography through its own origins, allowing yourself to get fully immersed in the artistry before you get the chance to see the shot or allow the images to get you hyped enough to keep going but rather the process of the creation of the image is the art form in its purest form. Personally I shoot Blk & Wht film 90% of the time, I buy bulk 100ft rolls and preroll my own cassettes. for some reason this is when the child in me begins to get excited for the day of film shooting. The excitement lasts, at least in the back of my mind, until those shots I am waiting to see come through in the development stages that night or the following morning. it carries in a way that digital photography doesn't always allow after so long. this connection to the work, the art in form of you're own development is that intagable feeling that so many people tend to forego or don't experience as a lot of the younger generation has never shot film at this point. I think, to know the photographic process as an art form you have to dig to the roots of its origin to find the connection that so many find elusive. and it keeps you fead for the road to come so to speak. (I keep an "all film day" in rotation on the calendar every week or two at most, it gives me something to plan for and look forward to. using the same type and style of camera in both processes helps a bit too I feel). Love it :) Very excited to see you guys up there are trying film and playing around with things just like we are :) can wait for all the future content Reciprocity is a factor u need to consider when doing long exposures. The film emulsion loses sensitivity after beeing exposed for a set amount of time. meaning if u would open your shutter for 3 min u would need to open the shutter for x times longer on film. (x being that factor) :) The great thing is film is so versatile you can experiment like crazy with long exposures :D

Excellent video, and thanks for what you said Ben about caring a little less about the hero shot and thinking more in terms of 'groups' of shots to tell the story. I've been flirting with this myself lately and the way you put it made it click into place. I also think there's a lot to be said about being more intentional. Great advice all round! 15:47 When I first started shooting film, my first rolls were Kodak Echtar 100, and fuji400 black and white. I used them only to see the difference between even exposure and one stop over. It blew my mind because there was no difference in brightness of the image, just more shadow detail when you over exposed. The midtones didn’t change a bit. Shooting Film takes trust. You, as a photographer, have to trust your instincts, and that your instincts have been properly built in the first place.

Yo, I really love your work Benjamin. And this interview with McKinnon is so inspiring. I always feel more fulfilled just experimenting and doing fun video that are 'bad' or 'silly' just for myself, even if it's limited equipment. I end up learning alot more from it. Do you ever do workshops or anything in Iceland, or do you ever need help with shoots? I'm from Connecticut and I love shooting wild life and I have a 600mm lens. I know Iceland is cold, but I've been meaning to travel more these days!

I still have the Flip and use it. Mine is not the HD, but I have been using it again for about year or so. I have been wanting to get my film camera out for a while now, so taking it to have it checked out to make sure it is working properly and be ready for London

Great one you guys, creativity changes often need an impetus to keep thrm fresh and changing, and that can come in many forms. I started on slide film, ask anyone who has shot Fujichrome Velvia how much exposure leeway you have...half a stop between correct, under or over. Negative film is much more forgiving. Actually glad I still have my old film cameras (Canon A1, Eos 3, Canoney G111). Even my digital is an old Eos 50D. My main reason for looking for a new digital now is low light performance in the rainforest where 1600 is virtually the base ISO with 3200 or above often necessary. Needless to say I have to rent a full frame for that. In the 90s when I first came to Peru and spent 6 months solid in the Amazon rainforest it was all film, all tranny. Tranny 400 ISO is pretty crappy, so stuck to 50 & 100 and most of it survived without fungus trying to keep it cool and dry in 90% & above humidity and tent temperature to 50°C or more - oh the good old days! 😊

Great video and conversation - I just recently purchased new camera gear that's nice and all but the kind that will challenge me a lot more but I think my core problem is that I've gotta get out there more. That's where all of the the fun and future stories and experiences are at.

Hey Benjamin Wondering if you've ever looked into the Sony rx10 mk 4. it has a 24 - 600 mm lens... It's been my carry around camera and eliminates all of those long lenses.... $1500

Digital makes me lazy too. I grew up with analog B&W including developing/printing. Analog is a humbling experience compared to digital, especially if you do your own printing - you'll learn a lot more about light than you ever will in Lightroom. The path gets even darker with the new GenerativeAI available in Photoshop. The difference between taking pictures and making a photograph has become so blurred it's unidentifiable.

Pick up a 5D mark III, find a mod called magic lantern and load up Danne’s latest build. You might need to downgrade the firmware but its very easy. Now take this old dslr from 2012 that was capped at 1080p 30fps recording and flip magic lantern on and record 14 bit (yes 14) full frame 1080/UHD 4k/ 5.7k anamorphic (IN BODY ANAMORPHIC)/ and 7 fps FULL RESOLUTION of the sensor. Load the mlv app to look at and make your workflow for like davinci resolve or final cut and enjoy. You will be blown the hell away from the RAW quality video you’ll get from this decade old camera and the amazing film quality you can capture. I guarantee you will not be disappointed

I found the X2D and it’s huge file size with no option to go lower forced me to be more intentional

I think a lot of photographers fall into a trap where they believe all their photos are their work that should be shared and blocks them from just taking photos separate from anything else even as a break from work.

Now you kind of know how a war season Photographer feels about Digital back in the day when we were shooting film that’s all you had it was always a week to maybe two week waiting period to get your prints back now it’s just on the back of your camera you can see the finish subject film is not like digital at all and there’s more technique to it yeah it it’s not so much that it slows you down because it doesn’t but what it does is it allows you to create better content and know what you’re taking a picture of yeah you could do a test sheet on some subject you could even do a spray what are you just taking a bunch of pictures but that’s a lot of editing old fashion way? old-fashioned way you don’t have to do a test sheet figure out which picture it was that you’ve gotten edited you would have to sit here and put it on a whiteboard 10 edited editing film was hard mostly in the dark room blowing your images up cropping pasting spell racing film photos to try to see the image like you saw it or like you photographed it without a lot of leaf lotta greenery in the picture was a lot of tedious work by doing digital it’s a lot less dark room and yeah the photos the photographers that do the photos now already have the times set on how to get. I have been doing photo photos for about 40+ years maybe even 50 years since I am in my 60s now and yeah with digital it is a lot more faster the gratification is there quicker but yet I do not shoot fast and spray just cause it takes a lot to edited all that stuff yeah I can put it on the computer and take you a half an hour but when it comes right down to it it’s the style of the photographer and makes the great photo.
