@@arianrhodhyde7482 about 20 years ago, two girls who lived opposite me were kidnapped walking to school, they were raped and beaten and no one knew where they were. There are thousands and thousands of parents who have had their children kidnapped and would have a completely different outcome if their kids were wearing a watch with a tracker in. I'm not talking about 20 year olds being checked up on by their parents, I'm talking about kids, because guess what kids get taken and are rarely found. Abusive and controlling parents will make their kids lives miserable with a phone too, or any other way they can think of whether this watch exists or not, so that point is irrelevant.

My Alexa was hacked. When I was listening to Spotify it kept stopping and a random smart TV was shown to be using it. It happened a few times but I didn't want to change the password because I wanted to find out who was using it. The only way to contact them was changing the titles of playlists and I ended up having a conversation with the thief. They said that they got the information from a friend who had stolen it through my Alexa. I changed my password and signed out of all devices and haven't had a problem since but it made me realise how easily it can happen.

FYI. The microphones in these smart devices can usually be triggered using specifically modulated light to induce a current in a certain way emulating the interaction of actual sound waves on the material. Smart tech devices often do not have lockout set by default, giving somebody an unlimited number of attempts to unlock and send commands. Cool story? Some people leave their smart tech in line of sight from the outside, because why wouldn't they? Infrared light can be used. It takes only a few hours to brute force 4 digit codes. Certain smart tech such as... a smart garage unlock, can be accessed from other smart tech devices by design. Basically, smart tech is insecure as fuck in general. In this example, somebody could easily use your own smart tech to simply let themselves into your house and do whatever they need to do.

@@GrumpyGrebo in the study by Takeshi Sugawara, they used a 60 milliwatt laser, and this was without any obstructions, using near perfect conditions. Assuming real life break-in conditions, you have glass, curtains, plants and maybe even a whole Bush in your way, making the hacking of smart-devices using this method near impossible unless you have a big ass laser. In real life, you'd need one of two types of lasers: either a really powerful one to flood the entire device with light in order to trigger the microphone, or a less powerful one, in which case you have to angle the laser just right. You can only use this method of attack if you have direct line of sight and if the device is angled correctly. If, like the google nest, the microphone is located at the back, you're fucked. This method of hijacking smart devices is really impractical and obvious, especially since there are so many easier methods. This also renders using any other light source for hacking useless since its still really obvious and impractical. Sitting around for hours until a smart device is hacked? A normal robbery takes, at most (from arrival to fleeing) 15 minutes. Sitting there for hours on end is extremely suspicious and your cover can easily be blown.

You do need a large lens to focus over distance, but this is not such a futuristic unobtainable component. Line of sight is obviously required, in many urban environments this is not a restrictive factor. Easier methods yield appropriate results. Crime is rapidly shifting into smart tech space. same with padlocks and locks in general btw.... LPL has a bit of a grudge against them as well for marking locks which barely offer any resistance as High security amazon's choice

Best hacking method I've heard is borrowing your local optics laboratorie's laser which can fake sound waves on an Alexa input microphone through funky physics, allowing you to give Alexa commands silently though the window

I've seen a guy who hacked Alexa for his own convenience. It turns out Alexa doesn't parse what you said, it records you and sends the recordings over the internet to bigger computers who figure out what you said and send commands back. So he has his computer able to send recordings to Alexa's HQ directly. For example, Alexa will say anything you ask it to say, like "Alexa, say good morning." He has a recording of him saying that, and his computer sends it automatically when his phone logs on to the wifi in his home office. So he enters the office and Alexa says "Good morning". So if you can copy how the Alexa tells HQ which Alexa it is, you can send anything you want to HQ and it will think somebody said it to that Alexa.

The watch thing is simple to solve... The manufacturer just needs to have each watch have a randomly generated default password. Or, force you to change the default password on setup.
