USCIS in their own site tells you that the N-600 is optional and not required. Hence, you DO NOT NEED TO FILE A N-600. Also, by the operation of the law, DHS cannot deport a US Citizen who has a valid passport. Once you have a US Passport, issued by Department of State, USCIS/DHS has no power to undo that decision. All they can do is to request Department of State to consider revoking the person in question. However, the decision is still up to the Department of State and if they decide not to revoke the passport, then the person in question regardless of what USCIS thinks, is a US Citizen. I am a derived citizen and have lived in the US since the 80s (Father naturalized in the early 90s) and NEVER EVER had any issue by not having a Certificate of Citizenship. While my status never officially changed as US Citizen to USCIS, I was able to petition my wife from overseas using only US Passport. So if USCIS has me as a LPR in their system, how was I able to bring my spouse from overseas? Because my US Passport is a conclusive proof of my US CItizenship and there is not a thing that USCIS can do about it. Yes, having a Certificate of Citizenship is a good idea, because it is irrefutable and has no expiration date. However, if it was that important, USCIS website would have said so. I am the living proof that Certificate of Citizenship is not required as I had no problem living without one as a derived citizen.

Hi Steve I hope you’re doing great. How did you get your passport if you don’t mind me asking. My brother is 38, my dad became a citizen before my brother was 18 (he lived with him as well). Could he just apply for a passport? Thank you for your time.

@@cristianduran5773 Were both parents a US Citizen prior to your brother’s 18th birthday? If not, can you specify your parents’ marriage status on your brother’s 18th birthday? Thanks. The reason behind this is because if your biological parents were divorced, you must provide evidence of your father's legal and physical custody. If your parents were married, then the marriage certificate suffices legal custody.

Hello. I was adopted when I was I minor by US citizen Navy Commander father based in Subic and a filipina mother that eventually became a US Citizen. As years passed, we do not know that the adoption here in the Philippines was approved by the judge. We only found out about it when we are already adults applying for birth certificate at PSA. We are now wondering if we are still eligible for US citizenship. I hope someone can shed light to this matter. Thank you very much.

I am a US citizen for 50 years through Naturalization. I was 16 years when I came to America with my mom. My last name was misspelled . I sent an Application with my birth certificate translated to make me a new passport with the correct spelling. I opened a can of worms. Now the Huston office like to know what names I have been using. I was using George instead of Georgios And E for middle initial instead Emmanuel. I consulted with an Attorney and they said to make name change with the court. When you suggest? They kept my passport. I will appreciate your response. Thank you 🙏

Hello Jim, Thank you for this information. I have two questions, please help me. 1) part 2#14B of form N600. Since our family came to the U.S several years ago, we have travelled multiple times back to our home country. We have renewed passports up to 4 times. So the question asked to provide information about what document you presented to enter the United States, passport number, port of entry and date of issuance of passport, is this talking about the child’s first time entering the US? 2) Is the date of issuance talking the first passport or the one most recently travelled one? Thanks for your help.

The website says kids under age 14 cannot have USCIS account and have to do from parents' account. When I do that, all the information asked is of me and not of my kids. When I put in their DOB, it won't accept it coz the account is already been associated with my account when I applied for myself earlier. How do you apply N-600 for kids under 14 years old through parents' USCIS account? 凸 9

Please get your proof of citizenship asap by filing the N-600. If you don't then when you apply for social security you will be denied like I was. Social security wants proof of my citizenship before I can get any benefits!!. They would not accept my adoption papers as proof that I automatically became a US citizen when my stepfather legally adopted my brother and I. I had to pay $1170.00 to file the N-600 in July. I just had my biometrics appt today and that was a joke! I've been told that my application could take another 5 to 9 months because of the USIC back log. In the meantime I don't have the retirement income that I worked all my life for! I also don't have Medicare. You have to be on SS to get Medicare. his whole process has been a nightmare for me!!

I want to add that back in the day when I was adopted all my mother had to do was fill out a simple form that cost $5.00. But she didn't bother doing that..SS also told me that I could just bring in an American passport as proof of citizenship and that they would accept that.. They literalyl told me to apply for one instead of he N-600 as it would be faster and cheaper for me. So, I did that. It was $300.00 and it was denied because I didn't submit proof of my citizenship with the application. Seriously, nobody knows what they're doing!

If your child automatically acquired U.S. citizenship, you may apply for the child's certificate of citizenship from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or apply for a U.S. passport. If your child has not obtained a certificate of citizenship, you will need to present the following when applying for your child's U.S. passport: Proof of the child’s relationship to the U.S. citizen parent. For the biological child of a U.S. citizen, this generally will be a certified copy of the foreign birth certificate (and a translation if the birth certificate is not in English). For an adopted child, you must submit a certified copy of the final adoption decree (and a translation if the decree is not in English); Proof the child is admitted as a lawful permanent resident, such as the child’s foreign passport with a I-551 stamp, or the child's permanent resident card (green card); Proof of identity and citizenship of the U.S. citizen parent(s); Evidence the child is residing in the United States in the legal and physical custody of the U.S. citizen parent; Completed Form DS-11 and supporting documents. If your child obtained a certificate of citizenship from USCIS, you must submit it with your child’s passport application as proof of citizenship. This is what the state department says. Even if this is for kids it can still apply if they naturalized before you turned 18. I also recommend getting a book and card as you can use the card for things like updating your Social Security status. Translations of documents if not in English need to be certified and physical copies along with photocopies are ideal. Make multiple copies of everything. This works if you have not yet applied for N-600. For proof of US custody you can use marriage certificate (translation needed if not in English), US school records and so on.
