I mentioned a hand full of retellings that are on my TBR, but below is a list of ones I have already reviewed. I like the idea of Persephone being soft spoken and gentle, but still snarky and nasty when she needs to be.
@Mariusweeddeath
@Mariusweeddeath 6 жыл бұрын
I always like the idea that Hades is just very efficient worker and ruler of the Underworld and just like to keep to himself, with Persephone being the more vocal, friendly and sociable side to the relationship. Hades is willing to let certain slights against him slide but Persephone isn't and she is able to get Hades to pull up his belt and get some pride in him. Its not like Hades doesn't go to the usual Olympus barbecue, but when he does he like to sit in the back and talk to the other minor gods. After Persephone, he is a bit more sociable among the other Major Gods. They are both somewhat incomplete without the other but together they work best.

One of my biggest pet peeves with any mythology retellings are where the antagonist is Hades or where he's used to replace Satan. Hades is (imo) the normal one of the three power gods. He's the one with a conscience and he's the one who keeps mostly to himself and does what he does within the laws of justice. In the book I'm writing freaking Zeus is the villain. It's actually a Hades/Persephone story as well, with elements of other literary figures but anyway Zeus is the villain. So sick of seeing everyone paint Hades in this terrible light based on assumptions because he's the ruler over the underworld.

Thoughts on Tomes There is an author I found recently named Rachel Alexander that published two books that I think are very good interpretations of Hades and Persephone. The first book is called Receiver of Many and it also has a sequel titled Destroyer of Light. She was originally a fanfic writer, but it feels like she did a lot of her research for both books as far as the mythology, which is nice. She can be found on Tumblr and I think she also has a website. Both of her books are available for purchase on Amazon if you want to check them out. Hades isn't a villain in this story, which is a characteristic you look for in Hades/Persephone stories as you mentioned. Persephone is also very much Queen of the Underworld.

Classics major here! You're absolutely right about the term "rape." It was most likely a transliteration of the Latin "rapio" which means "to seize or abduct" and does not imply anything about sex. In fact, that is also an archaic definition of "rape" in English. In Greek, the word I've seen most is "harpazo" which also means simply "abduct."
@Lynartz

In spanish is Rapto which is abduct. I was horrified first time I heard about the myth in English.

Hades and Persephone is one of my favorite myths too. I always get so upset when Hades is always seen as the "evil" god. It pains me. Persephone is probably one of my favorite goddess as well because she became a bad ass Queen. (Also she's spring and I was born in spring, so...) I can't tell you enough how much I loved this video.

Thanks for the new perspective. Previously, I had the negative impression of what happened with Persephone going to the Underworld but this gave me a new viewpoint. What's interesting is your description of what you want to see in a retelling reminds me of Tangled (overbearing mother, girl goes with guy to a new world, she kicks ass and is on equal footing with guy, becomes powerful leader). Not exact but most definitely some similarities :D

I think the "meek, unassuming" Persephone is due to her being with Demeter. She's been held back for so long that being around someone who lets her be herself eventually becomes the birth of a queen.

@@rebeccavaughn8897 meek in the sense she was coddled her entire life before Hades, not knowing how strong her sense of character actually is. She simply didn't know any better until she stood far away from her mother's shadow. There's a word for it, & I'm struggling to remember, but it's something like imperative or impetus. Rhaegar was a dickhead. Sure sneak out with a woman who’s family are known for their stubbornness and temper without telling a soul. That wouldn’t upset people. Then, when things turned to shit why not just ride off to war anyway? He’s a bloody idiot. Of all the things he could have done, fighting Robert would have served only to confirm he did something wrong.

Yes! Hades and Persephone have always been my number one since day one! Part of it has to do with Persephone being black and having that rare representation (because her mother was the Goddess of the Harvest - which young me equated with the earth and so with being brown, like myself) and part of it being with the allure of the underworld and all that ~darkness~ my emo preteen self loved. Also I always loved how motherly and protective Demeter was as well.

Persephone I love your reason but I don't think persephone was black b/c this is a greek mythology and greeks are white, also every single painting, drawing, statue.. etc, percieved her as white. Though, I could be wrong so if I am, then do not attack me with comments saying I'm racist bc I'm really not, as I myself am half black and half middle eastern. 💖💖 Oh and I also loved how you used your creativity and imagination in creating your own personalized thoughts on their appearances.

@zoeapostolidou3964

That's actually not correct. Persephone, Demeter and all other goddesses are described as being "white armed" and generally fair. Also, why would the ancient Greeks create Gods that resembled people other than themselves? It would make no sense. All Pantheons around the world feature deities modelled after the people who created them and the Greek pantheon is no exception to the rule.

It ticked all of my boxes and THEN some and I realized all the things I disliked in the first book (relationship/personality-wise) were deliberate and it just made me glow with squishy H&P feels. I also like Goddess of the Rose by PC Cast even though there's some myth-mixing, the main character travels to The Underworld so it gives me the right vibes. i would like to see a retelling where Persephone feels like she should live up to her mother and her expectations but grows into her own before and after she meets Hades. she realizes that she doesn't have to live up to her mother and becomes her own kind of god;. she's the one that helps dispenses judgment and justice along with Hades. she also becomes one/only person confidant and partner to him. she basically becomes the goddess that becomes a mix of life and justice for the dead

The other day I was making reseach about Greek mythology in english (I'm portuguese, so english is my second language) and I found the myth of "The Rape of Europe" and my reation was the same as yours since rape is different than abduction or kidnapping. What I thought at the time was an error in translation from Latin to English because in my language (just a reminder, portuguese is a language that was influenced by Latin), the word for "Kidnapping" is "Rapto" which is very simular to "Rape" (in portuguese "Rape" is "Violação" or "Abuso sexual". Anyway, great discussion. I really enjoyed it.

I know I recommended Deathless already and you're probably aware of this but it has similar themes to the Hades and Persephone myth. The only think you probably wouldn't like about it is the fact that Koschei is kind of bad, but he's a representation of a russian demon so it makes sense. But I do feel like Marya Morevna is pretty much the Persephone you say you like to read about! She goes with Koschei willingly, she is constantly surrounded by life and death elements and she becomes a fierce queen who's also a soldier and she ultimately proves to be stronger than Koschei. I just feel the need to constantly tell people to read this book since I'm completely obsessed with it, hahaha

You need to check out ‘The Receiver of Many’! Its by far the best I have found, the author really knows her greek mythology and I die over the relationship between Hades and Persephone. It is so well written, Persephone does start out very sheltered (which is understandable with her wacko mom) but she definitely grows and is never at a power struggle with Hades. Ugh its the best retelling, seriously go give it a read!

This is why I love the Court of Mist and Fury as a retelling. Sorry for spoilers for anyone in the comment section - . . . It shows the love and respect that Hades had for Persephone and her making the choice to be with him. Sure it isn't exactly the same, but there are many similarities that are just on point for me. Perhaps Tamlin is one in the same as the Demeter, him being from the Spring Court and 'trapping' Feyre. Feyre, like Persephone, is not weak willed and embraces the Night Court and the freedom that she is allowed with Rhys as opposed to Tamlin. I haven't watched your Court of Mist and Fury videos so I'm not sure if you've already made these points, but as far as fairly accurate character descriptions go, Mist&Fury is the bomb for me, although it has been a couple years since I studied the myth.

KZfaq just recommended your video to me and I have a recommendation! I actually wrote a Hades and Persephone story. Hades is an awesome dude in it, and Persephone grows hugely as a character, and no one would be very willing to mess with her by the end. Hades is all about encouraging her self-discovery and giving her opportunities to flex her muscles that she doesn't get on Olympus. It's called Olympian Confessions: Hades and Persephone. I don't know if you're still looking for recs, but figured I'd leave it here just in case ^_^

Hades is so much better than Zeus, Poseidon and the other gods. Zeus raped Hera as an animal, forced her to marry him because she lost her virginity, and then constantly cheats on her with anything with a pulse. Don't get me started on the Medusa story. She starts out as a loyal priestess of Athena but loses her virginity when Poseidon rapes her. When Medusa seeks Athena's help, Athena turns her an her two sisters into gorgons for getting raped!!! WHAT THE HELL ATHENA?!!!

I read that there was an interpretation that Athena turned them to gorgons in order to protect them from men who would try to attack them.

+M T and look how much that helped them, especially Medusa 😂 Also, Athena helped Perseus kill her and after the deed was done, the head was given to Athena as a gif and she put it on her shield. Athena was a huuuuge dick in that myth

Athena did that because Madusa was with Poseidon in Parthenon. That was disgraceful.

Zeus' marriage to Hera differs according to the source and no, he never raped her as an animal. He tricked her by turning into a bird in some versions. And there is a reason he "cheats with anything with a pulse" (wildly untrue). As a King of his time, he was expected to be provided with worthy heirs from his wife. He was not, neither Ares nor Hephaestus were worthy enough and so, he sought women of noble lines to give him these children-women that held traits of Hera, no less. And that was also a way for the ancient Greeks to justify his title of "Father of Hellenes and Father of the Gods"

And no, in Greek mythology, Medusa was never cursed. You're speaking of a retelling written by Ovid, a Roman poet who made a habit of twisting the myths for his own political gain. Medusa in Greek mythology had been born a Gorgon, just like her sisters. She was neither a priestess of Athena nor was she assaulted by Poseidon. In Greek mythology and more specifically, in Hesiod's Theogony, we learn of Poseidon being with Medusa in a field of flowers and it is shown to be completely consensual. And no, ad you can probably tell, Athena never cursed Medusa or her sisters.

I really enjoyed watching this video. I learned something new. I have also read a few books where Hades was an asshole and Persephone (although I didn't know she was Persephone at the time) was this innocent and rather boring character. It's always frustrating and I completely agree that a book would be far better if they just put these two characters on equal footing. Hopefully one of your TBRs turns out to be a five star. I'm ready to see that video lol. P.S. I love how eloquent you are in your videos.Really enjoy them 😊

There's a retelling of the myth on the internet called: Myth: My seasons. it is so good, and it tells the story where Persephone went with Hades willingly herself and her falling in love with him first. it's very good, but it is made as a comic. credits to the author! she's fantastic!

Have you read the princess curse by merrie haskell? it is a combination of the Hadea and Persephone myth, the twelve dancing princesses and sleeping beauty. I really like it. I feel the protagonist fits your interpretation of Persephone. However it is middle grade so less romantic and it doesn't get to the part where she rules as a bad ass queen. But she's clever, driven, and does what she wants, which is great. I recommend it!

thanks! Really, google is the best for this because there are so many resources out there for greek myth, as it is a popular topic. If you want more about the modern version of the tale, definitely be sure to include that in your search. It's tough to find a lot on persephone, because their wasn't much about her and the cult of persephone was pretty secretive as well.

Hey Samantha! There is only one Hades and Persephone retelling that I have read and that made me curious to see if you have read it. It's called The Goddess Test by Aimée Carter and you actually have read that one, and rated it five stars on Goodreads. So have you changed your mind about that one? It's been a few years since I've read the book so I don't quite remember how much I liked it myself. But I have rate it only three stars. You really got me excited about this myth though!

I actually have done a full series review on it, and yes, the series as a whole is stunningly mediocre. When I read the first book, it was just what I needed and I had a ton of hope for it. Since Kate isn't actually Persephone and Persephone still exists, I forgave it for her being naive and innocent, because I thought in later books she'd turn into a boss. And then she didn't and she was useless.

In mythology, Hades always came across as just, kind, and merciful. He seemed to follow the rules, even if others cheated and he got screwed over in the process. And he was cautious, rarely taking risks, preemptively solving potential problems. So any representation of Hades, to me, needs to have these elements. Whether or not it’s a Persephone story. I could do with Persephone being just about anything, as long as she’s written well. (Persephone changes a lot so I’m more flexible with her interpretation) But Hades needs to actually be Hades. No brooding bad boy allowed.

I love this myth, though for me, Persephone (or Kore as she was known) was very sheltered by her overbearing mother. And yes, through her relationship with Hades, she really finds herself and her power and does eat the seeds of the fruit willingly. I DON'T think she went willingly with him at the beginning at all (and in this, I totally see the parallel with Beauty & the Beast) but with him being a respectful guy and indeed a good God, she does fall in love with him. And like you, I have yet to find a book / retelling on this story... Thank you for the video. :)

"Kore" was a title used instead of her name. And no, she was not sheltered and Demeter was not an overbearing mom though people do love to project their mommy issues onto her while this claim is supported by no source.

@@zoeapostolidou3964 Um, it's a myth, and there are many different versions of it, even at the time of the ancient Greeks. So basically, people can believe whatever they want, without having to call them names or telling them they have "mommy issues" for goodness sake...

It definitely has elements but I wouldn't necessarily call it a retelling. It's an amalgamation of so many different things and that's one of the reasons I love it so much. I would say that if people like the H&P myth, they'll probably like Uprooted too.
