HADFIELD: CREATING BASIC FEATURES - backboard & platform.
Finally, I’ve managed to start the Hadfield build. Today’s video is all about those basic features, ie the backboard, ready for the painted backscene, which will be based on real images from Google Earth. Secondly the plaftorm. Yes one platform, as Hadfield is on Manchester’s single track branchline network. I go through the basic structure and how I created the platform edge shape as its not completely straight. The real station track does curve the opposite way to mine, but this would reduce space for the station building. See how I got on, and enjoy!

Little, you say. But you always put so much thought into everything that something little is quite significant! Looking good as always.

Thank you David, I do want to get it right, hopefully first time, but its not as much as I used to do. Hopefully I can get ahead in the Summer hol.

Hi John - a solid bit of platform engineering a la Metcalfe 😊. Always good to see the bare baseboard disappear under scenery. Cheers Euan

Lol, I build a backboard and a platform, yes its not the most exciting of starts, but rather a very important start. Ominous naa, I agree. It came from an episode of Doctor Who where the daleks were in World War 2. My sense of humour I guess, lol

Great start ,Hadfield station platform. Can't wait to see what the station would look like! I noticed in the railways of the UK stations regardless who built them, preamalgamation, amalgamation, BR or Network Rail they all have platforms at the stations to make boarding trains easier. In the US we use steps to board our trains. I prefer platforms. My wife has trouble with steps. Bill and Janet from California

Hi, I’ve never been to the US, so I only used to having platforms. Started work on the building. I’ll be 3d printing varying parts due to the details attached to the building, but by big it will come together.

Those humps are very common at Railway Stations on the Mainline Railways as well as the London Underground. They are called "Harrington Humps" After the station of Harrington, near Workington, the first place one was created. It is to give better disabled access to trains from stations with low platforms. It is also a money saving exercise, it saves having to raise the whole platforms.
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 18 күн бұрын
Thank you. I guessed they were for access, didn’t know their name. Just never seen any before. Very common at bus stops. Every day a sch day.

Hi Dion, thank you. Even a year ago and the pace of work then, Hadfield building would have completed by now. I just cannot do it at the same pace these days.

Great job. “Wallsend Brewery” complete! Just a thought - where the space is between the wall and the coal stage, possibly an old stable block where the dray horses would have been? Another easy to watch very instructive video, well done. Paul C

Thank you for the suggestion, I will however, build the scene as it is nowadays. There is a building next to the station, not sure what it is mind.

10:58 it’s a Harrington Hump. First installed at Harrington in Cumbria used for mobility passengers to access the trains at the PRM spaces (I.e wheelchair spaces at the toilets). They’re common on a lot of stations with low platforms. I think we have a few in the far north of Scotland.

Hi William thank you. Ive seen loads of raised curbs at bus stops, yet buses can raise / lower the front of the bus. A train cannot do that, it makes a lot of sense and cheaper too.

Thanks Deano, I just cant believe how expensive cork has become. I used it to reduce noise, but honestly I couldnt notice any difference to areas without it.

You don't hang around once you decide to start on something. Just the backboard and station platform has made a big difference to the corner. I did wonder how you would work on everything but I should have realised you could take that out. Stephen

Hi Stephen, I actually think Ive dragged my heals on this one, the countryside scene has been complete for ages now. I have slowed down somewhat over the last few months. Hopefully I can make significant progress over the summer hols. Yes the board was designed to come out for the window installation couple of years ago, gratefully. Although the carriage shed will be a lean and hope. Thats another day, lol

John thanks for the video. I like the way you make your back scenes. Apologies if you had already posted this but can you tell me what the white board that you use is. It looks very good quality. Also I am sure they are widely available but what are the L mounts that you use as these are presumably the same thickness as the board. Thanks Stephen
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 17 күн бұрын
Hi Stephen, the board I use is 2mm A2 sheets from eBay. The more sheets you buy the cheaper it gets. The board tends to be quite soft and you need to protect it from marking. I do emulsion the board all over to protect it. I get the angle brackets from screwfix (43326). I like doing the boards this way as they are removable and create a great scenic divide. Hoping that’s helpful.

Hi John! You've made a great start to Hadfield station, and of course it's all removable - I was thinking it would be a bit of a stretch to get over there otherwise! Can I ask what height to you make your platforms? I know you said you made the edges from strips of 9mm wide greyboard, but how high are they after you've added the actual platform top? Cheers, Ian.
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 18 күн бұрын
Hi Ian, the platforms are 11mm without cork. Should you use any underlay add this thickness to 11. Eg I use to use 2mm cork, so 13mm. 2mm for the top, it’s a bit thick but 1mm does not look right IMO. Hoping that’s helpful
