A short, unscripted, talk about Hadrian's Wall, Britain's greatest Roman military monument. Why was it built? How did it work? Who lived there? are just some of the topics discussed. These may be of use if you're planning a visit, or maybe you're a student with an essay to write.
I regret that comments have had to be disabled. I'm afraid the abuse of this feature by a very small number of people meant that I was left with no choice.

Thanks for this talk and for your book. I recently visited Hadrian's Wall for the umpteenth time, but this time I had your book with me and it was very helpful in understanding some of what I was looking at etc.

Thanks, loved this. I’ve just found your channel and I’m enjoying your explanations. 27:18 I used to rock climb at crag lough over 50 years ago when Housesteads had not yet been investigated. I live in NZ now but always enjoy my explorations when I go back to the UK. I wish history and archaeology had been made so interesting when I was at school in Durham.

Question: Were the milecastles manned by the auxiliaries from the forts? I remember reading somewhere that there was a separate force, but never found this claim again, so I probably imagined it.

I’d wager that the culture of the various auxiliary units became less ethnic over time, and even the regular legions become less “Roman” and both develop a common military culture in the specific context of Britannia’s occupation.
