700/room in Boston means living in Brighton with 10 other people, in an almost comically dangerous fire-hazard of an old three story, and you're actually sharing the living room with *at least* 2 other people. Someone lives in a 'generously sized' closet. Someone lives in a curtained off space at the end of a hallway. Everyone is thrilled to have found somewhere so cheap. You couldnt rent a garbage bin for 700 in the Greater Boston Area, bc someone would be using that space as parking, and renting it for 3000/month.

on a sidenote for college housing, i was lucky and found a place one semester (my college schedule was super weird) off of campus in a big city in ohio back about 2012 that was 200 per room sharing with 2 other guys in a nice enough house. Wish i could have afforded to stay there all of college but I ended up getting cheap apartments and stuff for 400-800 a month the last few years and typically had to drive about 10 minutes to campus instead of walk/drive 2 minutes...

Omg the rent discussion. For rooms in a house you value each room as a percentage of the rent, master bedrooms with things like a private bath and walk in closet are the most, the large rooms, then small rooms are the lowest. Then the utilities are divided equally per person. And yes it is very common for the person holding the lease to lie to their housemates, charge them more than their share, up to the point of them having zero rent. Welcome to jamrock.

I can't really understand why people online have become so angry at landlords lately. Why don't they feel the same for people that provide other basic necessities as services as well? Or is it because they perceive landlords don't 'deserve' the money they get from tenants? Is it bad to own stuff that provides you with value over time? I feel like it's not a very well thought out position to have.
